http://incontiguousbrick.wordpress.com/2007/08/14/be-a-disaster-action-kid/Did you know FEMA has a website for kids!
It is full of great tips and advice:
On volcanoes:
“Fresh volcanic ash, made of pulverized rock, can be harsh, acidic, gritty, glassy and smelly. The ash can cause damage to the lungs of older people, babies and people with respiratory problems.”
“After an eruption, if you have ash on your roof, clear it away as soon as you can. The ash is heavy and could cause the roof to collapse.” - because all kids should climb on their roofs.
Hey Kids, don’t forget to:
“Have hurricane straps installed to keep the roof attached to the walls.”
“Buy flood insurance.”
and what every kid should worry about…
“Have your home bolted to the foundation. Anchor bolts cost as little as $2 each. They should be installed every six feet on the outer edges of your house.”
FEMA has some great games too!
Not to mention the great sense of humor…
Last but not least…
“Terrorism is a scary thing. Terrorists are criminals and when they are caught they are put on trial. Acts of terrorism include: threats of violence, assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings, bomb scares and bombings, and the use of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons.”
Now sleep tight!
