Obama: US may take action in S Sudan

US President Barack Obama says Washington will take action if needed in South Sudan after American forces were attacked in the African country.

"As I monitor the situation in South Sudan, I may take further action to support the security of US citizens, personnel and property, including our embassy, in South Sudan," Obama writes in a letter to Congress.

He made the remarks after a US military aircraft came under attack in the violence-hit country, injuring four American soldiers, one of them critically.

The aircraft came under attack during a reported evacuation mission in Bor city, the capital of the South Sudanese state of Jonglei.

U.S. Marines poised to enter South Sudan

By Marie-Louise Gumuchian. Barbara Starr and Antonia Mortensen, CNN
updated 6:27 AM EST, Tue December 24, 2013

(CNN) -- About 150 U.S. Marines are poised to enter turbulent South Sudan to help evacuate Americans and provide security for the U.S. Embassy, if ordered to do so, two U.S. military officials said Monday.

The troops are moving from Moron, Spain, to the Navy's Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti.

An estimated 100 U.S. citizens are believed to be in South Sudan, where steady violence is stoking fears of an all-out civil war in the world's newest country.
Riek Machar: This is an uprising

"By positioning these forces forward, we are able to more quickly respond to crisis in the region, if required," read a statement from U.S. Africa Command.

Some may not understand or blatantly disagree but I have to say this. Combat veterans, infantry, specialized M.O's, etc do a few tours in a free fire zone, the sandbox, Iraq, Afghanistan etc..Have they changed a bit, do they see through the Bullshiite and realize they were nothing but a number, a zit with no honorable purpose. Can they simply come home after this and fit in again, do they give up to the insanity and know they will never fit into what we conceive as society.
Are there those who's nature defies a sense of morality, the lack of human grace. Have some men been twisted apart to the degree they don't care about their lives or that of others.
Have some vets plain give up and decide (muck it) they have been killing for the gang running the USA, who gives a Shiite anymore.
Are there some who are definitely psychos chasing the big $$ bucks. YES
I know there are many a vet who detest to the core  their being they were used by a criminal faction for corporate & .01% control and who remain with soul and despise the gang on high who would never consider hiring out.
By no means am I defending MERCS, it is facing the reality, the point is the GOV,DOD, NSA, CIA recruit talent with their corporate security agency's. The training received under fire in combat by these selected ones, was our military and their superiors.
We can obviously target the mercs for what they are, the key is who's controlling them and to understand their ultimate goal.

U.N. Investigators Find Mass Graves In South Sudan

December 26, 2013 2:28 AM

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — U.N. investigators discovered a mass grave in a rebel-held city in South Sudan, the United Nations said Tuesday, as a possible opening occurred for negotiations to avert civil war in the world’s newest country where ethnic violence has erupted.

In New York, the U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to beef up its peacekeeping force in South Sudan. It condemned targeted violence against civilians and ethnic communities and called for “an immediate cessation of hostilities and the immediate opening of a dialogue.”

The government, meanwhile, announced that its military forces had taken back another key city, Bor, from the rebels who held it over the last week.

The bodies were found in the town of Bentiu in oil-rich Unity state: one grave with 14 bodies and a site nearby with 20 bodies, said U.N. human rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani.

The government minister of information, Michael Makuei Lueth, said Bentiu is under the control of rebels loyal to the country’s former vice president, Riek Machar, indicating they were responsible for the killings.

"War on terror" used to target minorities - report

LONDON - Countries on the front line in the "war on terror" are using the battle against extremists as a smokescreen to crack down on minority groups, according to an international human rights group.

For the fourth straight year, Somalia, Iraq, Sudan and Afghanistan topped an annual index compiled by Minority Rights Group International (MRG) of countries where minorities are most at risk of genocide, mass killings or violent repression.

"You see governments who have faced a genuine threat, but the point is the actions they have taken against the wider civilian population, including minority civilians, has been justified as part of the 'war on terror,'" MRG director Mark Lattimer told Reuters on Thursday.

"It has included disappearances, torture and extrajudicial executions."

A two-year insurgency in Somalia led by al Shabaab militants, who have links to al Qaeda and include foreign Islamists among their ranks, has killed some 18,000 civilians.

The insurgency has put historically oppressed minority groups such as the Bantu, Gabooye and Yibir at particular risk, the chairman of Somali Minority Rights and Aid Forum, Mohamed Hassan Daryeel, said.

"If the Yibir go with the government, they will be attacked by the radical Islamists. At the same time, if they go with the Islamists, they will be considered terrorists, and if they are neutral they'll be targeted by all sides."

Daryeel said recent amputations carried out by al Shabaab fighters were performed on child soldiers forcibly recruited from minority groups. "They are at the bottom of society, the most disadvantaged," he said.

Despite a decline in violence in Iraq, the report said civilian deaths from violence were still estimated at 300-800 a month over the past year.

It said minorities continued to bear the brunt of the violence, especially in the Nineveh area, home to the Shabak people.

"The Shabak community has suffered a lot at the hands of the terrorist groups and at the hands of the Kurdish 'Assayish' (secret police)," head of Iraq's Minorities Council, Hunain Al-Qaddo, told Reuters.

He said around 10,000 Shabak families had fled parts of Mosul to their homeland in the Nineveh plains for fear of being killed because of their ethnicity.

The rest of the top 10 list was comprised of Myanmar in fifth place, followed by Pakistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Israel/Palestinian territories.

Pakistan rose on the list due to an escalating conflict against different Islamist groups, combined with growing violence in national politics and suppression of dissidents.

Ethiopia, Eritrea and Yemen were assessed as under greater danger than a year ago with their governments' involvement in regional conflicts compounding the risk of repression at home.

African states make up half the report's top 20 list.
