It may not have made the final cut of Hollywood's history, but a film historian says major American film studios collaborated with Nazi Germany in the lead up to the Second World War.

From investing in German rearmament to editing out references to crimes being committed against Jews, studios including MGM, Paramount and 20th Century Fox failed to stand up to Hitler, Ben Urwand claims.

'I want to bring out a hidden episode in Hollywood history and an episode that has not been reported accurately,' the Harvard scholar said.

Bumped, Hollywood has been playing ball with the regimists since the get go. During the McCarthy era many actors who had so much as had friends who had been to a commy meeting were banned, blacklisted.
Back to Batan, Johny Wayne, now its Zombys movies.,,,no matter they create stars, these same actors %%% become become manipulated faces. SHOWTIME.
Some flicks are downright great, hit on the mark, however they are rare in comparrison to the insanity they feed the people.
Fo muck sake, HITLER was front page man of the year, TIMES MAG.
         Go figure.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2013/jun/29/historian-says-hollywood-collaborated-with-nazis?INTCMP=SRCH

About his research, Urwand said: "I wouldn't want what I write to be generalisable about Jews, but specific Jews in the movie business made decisions to work with Nazi leaders." Urwand has uncovered evidence that as late as January 1938 the German office of 20th-Century Fox was requesting Hitler's views about American movies. The letter was signed "Heil Hitler".

Three studios – MGM, Paramount and 20th-Century Fox – did not pull out of Germany until mid-1940. But even after Hollywood started making anti-Nazi films, Urwand says, it continued to erase reference to the Jews because studio chiefs (with the support of Jewish groups) wanted to "avoid special pleading on their behalf".

...
By 1932, Urwand writes, Nazi-inspired regulations allowed for film studios to have their permits revoked if films considered damaging to German prestige were shown not only in Germany but anywhere in the world. Hollywood, he claims, enthusiastically acquiesced to Hitler's demands to shape the content of movies to meet Nazi propaganda goals. "The excuse of ignorance can be ruled out," he writes. "Hollywood executives knew exactly what was going on in Germany, not only because it had been forced to fire its own Jewish salesmen but because the persecution of the Jews was well known at the time."

Hitler's Hollywood consul, Georg Gyssling, made regular studio visits, often requesting edits to scenes that ran counter to Nazi interests, or in the instance of films like The Mad Dog of Europe (1933) asking for them to be abandoned entirely. In 1936, after being tipped off by US censors that It Can't Happen Here, a film showing the advantages of democracy over fascism, would cause problems with "certain foreign governments", MGM head Louis B Mayer called off production.

"Hollywood is collaborating and the Nazis are having the final say on several important movies that would have exposed what was going on in Germany," said Urwand. The historian uncovered documents showing that, in order to get around currency export restrictions, MGM bought German bonds that financed rearmament factories in the Sudetenland. "You can't get more extreme than the biggest movie studio in America funding armaments a month after Kristallnacht," he said.

But other historians present a different explanation. In his research, Tom Doherty, a scholar at Brandeis University who recently published Hollywood and Hitler, 1933-1939, found US commerce department documents advising MGM that one way to get blocked currency out of Germany was to invest in armaments. "Maybe it doesn't look too good, but in 1936 Germany was a friendly nation and America was not a signatory to the treaty of Versailles

Above, U.S. military forces in Hawaii stage war games to prepare for a possible invasion. Apparently the defenders detected their mock enemy long before an invasion could be staged.

Below, several prominent Angelenos sharply question German Consul Georg Gyssling during a Town Hall appearance at the Biltmore. When Gyssling rebuffs the first question, attorney Joseph Scott threatens to resign from Town Hall if "the other side" is not heard, The Times says. Town Hall officials promise another gathering in which "the other side" could air its views ...

This brought laughter from the audience but the consul doggedly kept on talking." --The Times, reporting on a Town Hall appearance by

Film No Evil - ‘Hollywood and Hitler,’ by Thomas Doherty

...
Doherty, a film historian and professor of American studies at Brandeis University, points out that a great majority of American studios went out of their way to avoid any mention of the ominous political developments in Germany from the moment of Hitler’s rise to power in 1933 until well into 1939, when the outbreak of war in Europe had come to seem inevitable.

The motivation was largely commercial: the studios, with one important exception, did not want to risk the loss of a major European market by offending Joseph Goebbels’s Ministry of Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda, whose censors decided which foreign films would be shown in Germany.

The studios had seen early on what chaos the Nazis could cause, when Goebbels, not yet a state official, led a squad of brownshirts to disrupt the Berlin premiere of the 1930 antiwar film “All Quiet on the Western Front” with stink bombs, sneezing powder and cries of “Judenfilm!” Caving in to Nazi pressure, the weak Weimar government rescinded the film’s exhibition license, and Goebbels had won one of his first major propaganda victories. When the Nazis did come to power, they soon passed a law prohibiting Jews from participating in German movies — an edict that immediately destroyed one of the most creative film industries in Europe and drove many of its leading figures to America.
...
Hollywood’s response to this forced Aryanization was halfhearted. Those studios that had invested heavily in German distribution offices — like Fox, Paramount and MGM — removed Jewish personnel from key posts inside Germany but otherwise continued to do business as usual. Those with less to lose, like RKO, United Artists and Columbia, moved their operations out of Berlin but went on dealing with Germany from Paris or London.

Only Warner Brothers cut off relations entirely. In April 1933, the head of the studio’s branch office in Berlin, a British Jew named Phil Kaufman, was attacked and beaten by brownshirts. Ordered to leave Berlin, Kaufman ended up in Stockholm, where he collapsed and died a few months later from causes that may or may not have been related to the attack. That was enough for Jack Warner, the studio’s head. He immediately closed operations in Germany and became, as the decade wore on, the most actively anti-Nazi of the moguls.

But the Third Reich’s influence, as Doherty shows, extended beyond Germany to Hollywood itself. Unwilling to risk the displeasure of Nazi officials — and in particular, the wrath of the German consul in Los Angeles, Georg Gyssling — the studios avoided any mention of German politics in their productions, while backing away from Jewish subject matter, a Hollywood staple in the ’20s with films like “The Jazz Singer.”

Justification for this self-censorship was found in the Production Code, a set of laxly enforced moral guidelines established in 1930 by the industry’s trade organization, the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America. In 1934, the code was given new teeth with the creation of the Production Code Administration, an enforcement office under the direction of the implacable Joseph I. Breen (the subject of a previous book by Doherty, “Hollywood’s Censor”).

A vague admonition in the code — “the history, institutions, prominent people, and citizenry of all nations shall be represented fairly” — was all that was needed. It became the Breen Office’s excuse to codify, in Doherty’s words, “a see-no-evil, speak-no-evil, hear-no-evil policy toward any regime on the planet, especially if the nation in question offered a lucrative market for Hollywood imports.”

Hollywood and the FBI hit on comedian Charlie Chaplin: Chaplin became increasingly political and his next film, The Great Dictator (1940), satirised Adolf Hitler. The 1940s was a decade marked with controversy for Chaplin, and his popularity declined rapidly.

Hey Chris.  In case you don't know, the recent remake of Red Dawn (which is terrible, BTW) had to be re-done to remove the Chinese as the invaders and replace them with North Koreans - because the Chinese complained.

The Chilling History of How Hollywood Helped Hitler (Exclusive)
8:40 AM PDT 7/31/2013 by Ben Urwand

In devastating detail, an excerpt from a controversial new book reveals how the big studios, desperate to protect German business, let Nazis censor scripts, remove credits from Jews, get movies stopped and even force one MGM executive to divorce his Jewish wife.

This story first appeared in the Aug. 9 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

The 1930s are celebrated as one of Hollywood's golden ages, but in an exclusive excerpt from his controversial new book, The Collaboration: Hollywood's Pact with Hitler (Harvard University Press, on sale Sept. 9), Harvard post-doctoral fellow Ben Urwand uncovers a darker side to Hollywood's past.

The Collaboration: Hollywood's Pact with Hitler   by Ben Urwand

Overview-
To continue doing business in Germany after Hitler's ascent to power, Hollywood studios agreed not to make films that attacked the Nazis or condemned Germany's persecution of Jews. Ben Urwand reveals this bargain for the first time—a "collaboration" (Zusammenarbeit) that drew in a cast of characters ranging from notorious German political leaders such as Goebbels to Hollywood icons such as Louis B. Mayer.

To continue doing business in Germany after Hitler's ascent to power, Hollywood studios agreed not to make films that attacked the Nazis or condemned Germany's persecution of Jews. Ben Urwand reveals this bargain for the first time--a "collaboration" (Zusammenarbeit) that drew in a cast of characters ranging from notorious German political leaders such as Goebbels to Hollywood icons such as Louis B. Mayer.

At the center of Urwand's story is Hitler himself, who was obsessed with movies and recognized their power to shape public opinion. In December 1930, his Party rioted against the Berlin screening of All Quiet on the Western Front, which led to a chain of unfortunate events and decisions. Fearful of losing access to the German market, all of the Hollywood studios started making concessions to the German government, and when Hitler came to power in January 1933, the studios--many of which were headed by Jews--began dealing with his representatives directly.

Urwand shows that the arrangement remained in place through the 1930s, as Hollywood studios met regularly with the German consul in Los Angeles and changed or canceled movies according to his wishes. Paramount and Fox invested profits made from the German market in German newsreels, while MGM financed the production of German armaments. Painstakingly marshaling previously unexamined archival evidence, The Collaboration raises the curtain on a hidden episode in Hollywood--and American--history.

Hi T..
Charly Chaplin was run out of Hollywood for a film he made, a Satire, exposing Adolf and his crew...

yes ... The Great Dictator - with all the "double crosses"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Dictator

The Great Dictator is a 1940 American comedy-drama film starring, written, produced, scored, and directed by Charlie Chaplin, following the tradition of many of his other films. Having been the only Hollywood filmmaker to continue to make silent films well into the period of sound films, this was Chaplin's first true talking picture as well as his most commercially successful film.[3]

At the time of its first release, the United States was still formally at peace with Nazi Germany. Chaplin's film advanced a stirring, controversial[4] condemnation of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini's fascism, antisemitism, and the Nazis, whom he mocks in the film as "machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts".

Chaplin's film followed only a few months after Hollywood's first parody of Hitler, the short subject You Nazty Spy! by the Three Stooges,[5] although Chaplin had been planning it for years before.

Hitler had been previously allegorically pilloried in the German film by Fritz Lang, The Testament of Dr. Mabuse. In his 1964 autobiography, Chaplin stated that he would not have made the film had he known about the actual horrors of the Nazi concentration camps.[

...
Paternity suit and Oona O'Neill

The years following the commercial success of The Great Dictator were a challenging time for Chaplin, whose legal troubles stemming from an affair with an aspirant actress named Joan Barry took up most of his time and generated a large amount of negative publicity
...
The 1940s was a decade marked with controversy for Chaplin, and his popularity declined rapidly. He was accused of communist sympathies, while his involvement in a paternity suit and marriages to much younger women were considered scandalous.

An FBI investigation was opened on Chaplin, and he was eventually forced to leave the United States and settle in Switzerland

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933)
"Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse" (original title)

A new crime wave grips the city and all clues seem to lead to the nefarious Dr. Mabuse, even though he has been imprisoned in a mental asylum for nearly a decade.

...
While Dr. Mabuse may seem the image of Hitler, he predates the rise of the Nazis. Today he does not simply seem a figure from the past history, but a compellingly contemporary image of terrorism in an age of universal conspiracy and advanced technology.

Lang had made his first film based on Mabuse in 1922 with his two-part masterpiece of silent filmmaking, Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler. Based on a character created by novelist Norbert Jacques, Mabuse was a master criminal who used disguise, blackmail, stock market manipulation and occult powers of hypnosis to deliver people into his control.

He proclaimed, “There is only one thing that is interesting anymore: playing with people and their destinies.” Based on such earlier master criminals as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Professor Moriarty and the French phantom bandit, Fantômas, Mabuse brought new, modern elements to the character of unstoppable evil through his role as a psychoanalyst and his occult powers of mind control.

Short post, Charley Chaplin was raised dirt poor, he was a super talented man with a heart, mind and soul  in sync.
He didn't care about the FBI witch hunts, he was sick to death of the people being deceived and used by the elite sucklings in Hollywood working for the pols agenda. He basically told the masters to MUCK off, his attempt at waking up the people was attacked from every possible angle by the fed attack dogs and the Hollywood propaganda. I assume he simply didn't want to be involved in the sociopaths circle,  He made that clear. I hope he was content in his later years knowing he he rammed a bus up the elkites backside.
People on here are not self seeking, powermonger, rats bastards  they aren't  seeking anything other than our rights & exposure of the regimes crimes and their blatants disregard for this nation. Criminals, elite cons, and fakes are center stage and their propaganda ma chime is  dominating the majorities We have rapped, betrayed and deceived.
Domination of self thought, instilling fear, their  playing US among others is a timeless methodry, they are our protectors, in effect they are our controllers.           Herman Goering made this fact perfectly clear at the Nuremberg trials, WAR CRIMES.
You people are aware of it, the Word is spreading domestically and globally.
Citizens and a fir % of insiders are utterly disgusted, the greater percent that is...May the good Lord, I pray to, keep us safe and couragious in our endevour to wake up those who are ingorent, we who resist the truth, who beleive in the regimes rhetoric.

Hitler in Hollywood
Did the studios collaborate?

...

In recent years, a variety of scholars, including Neal Gabler, J. Hoberman, Jeffrey Shandler, Lester D. Friedman, Steven Carr, and Felicia Herman, have worked on different aspects of this complicated history. But the story has been charged up by the appearance of two new books: “The Collaboration: Hollywood’s Pact with Hitler” (Harvard), by Ben Urwand, a junior fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard; and “Hollywood and Hitler, 1933-1939” (Columbia), by Thomas Doherty, a professor of American studies at Brandeis. Doherty’s book is much the better of the two. A witty writer familiar with Hollywood history and manners, Doherty places the studios’ craven behavior within a general account of the political culture of the movies in the thirties and forties. He finds both greed and fear in studio practice, but in a recent Times report on the controversy he strongly objects to Urwand’s use of the word “collaboration.” Urwand, an Australian, and the grandson of Hungarian Jews who spent the war years in hiding, flings many accusations.

He speaks of Hitler’s victory “on the other side of the globe,” by which he means Hollywood, and he claims to see “the great mark that Hitler left on American culture.” Throughout the book, he gives the impression that the studios were merely doing the Nazis’ bidding. In that same Times article, he says that Hollywood was “collaborating with Adolf Hitler, the person and human being.”

Urwand has established the existence of multiple contacts between the studios and German government officials, and, in an apparent coup, he makes central use of a figure whom Doherty summons only sparingly: the Nazi consul in Los Angeles, Georg Gyssling, a former diplomat whose suavely threatening manner resembles the polite menace of Conrad Veidt’s Major Strasser, in “Casablanca.”

Urwand shows that the studios occasionally allowed Gyssling to read scripts, to see early cuts of movies, and to demand—sometimes successfully—deletions from finished films. But are Urwand’s extreme conclusions warranted by what he has discovered? And, intentionally or not, his accusations stir up an old, sore question: should the Jews have done more to fight the persecutions that eventually enveloped them?
