I think everyone around the world knows that these airstrikes were not only an act of illegal war by Israel, but a criminal act of mass murder that violates the laws the Global Elite made for the rest of us a while back concerning offensive war (remember the Nazis) - seem like the Pigs can't even stick to their own rules.  But it all boils down to the vote.  Are Democrats happy been accomplices (with their elected Representative/Public Servant) to illegal mass murder for OIL Profits and Geopolicital strategic position and if not what to do?..they might go the way of the Brits and try and remove the Main Stream Corporate Spokespeople they are conned into electing.

Russia 'concern' over Israel air strikes

RUSSIA has voiced concern at Israeli air strikes against Syrian targets, saying that they threatened to escalate tensions in neighbouring countries.

"We are looking into and analysing all the circumstances surrounding the especially concerning reports of the May 3 and May 5 Israeli air strikes," the foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday.

"A further escalation of the armed conflict severely raises the risk of creating centres of tension in Lebanon as well as in Syria, and also destabilising the still relatively stable situation in the region of the Israeli-Lebanese border," the statement said.

Russia condemns Israeli air strike on Syria

Russian foreign ministry says reported attack would violate UN charter and can not be justified

Russia says it is very concerned about reports of an Israeli air attack inside Syria near Damascus and any such action would amount to unacceptable military interference.

"If this information is confirmed, then we are dealing with unprovoked attacks on targets on the territory of a sovereign country, which blatantly violates the UN charter and is unacceptable, no matter the motives to justify it," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

In Wake of US-Israeli Attack on Syria, UN Reveals Terrorists Not Government Used Sarin Gas

So-called "red line" both drawn and then crossed by US-Saudi-Israeli axis and their terrorist proxies.

May 6, 2013 (LD) - The reasoning behind recent US-Israeli attacks on Syria has been undermined further as the UN reveals Western-backed terrorists, not the Syrian government, deployed sarin gas during the 2 year conflict. Reuters reported in their article, "U.N. has testimony that Syrian rebels used sarin gas: investigator," that:

U.N. human rights investigators have gathered testimony from casualties of Syria's civil war and medical staff indicating that rebel forces have used the nerve agent sarin, one of the lead investigators said on Sunday.

The United Nations independent commission of inquiry on Syria has not yet seen evidence of government forces having used chemical weapons, which are banned under international law, said commission member Carla Del Ponte.

"Our investigators have been in neighboring countries interviewing victims, doctors and field hospitals and, according to their report of last week which I have seen, there are strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof of the use of sarin gas, from the way the victims were treated," Del Ponte said in an interview with Swiss-Italian television.

Heat-Seeking Missiles in Syria: The SA-7 in Action with Rebels
By C. J. CHIVERS

Throughout this year, as fighting intensified in Syria and antigovernment fighters grew in numbers and in strength, it had seemed inevitable that they would acquire heat-seeking shoulder-fired missiles and turn them against the Syrian military aircraft.

This blog had documented the part-by-part appearance in rebel hands of one old heat-seeking system, known as the SA-7. Since midsummer there have been occasional sightings of full systems but none, as far as we know, showing the system in actual use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tL4LKuJnQGQ&feature=plcp
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aRRCJCgHqg&feature=plcp

First, the SA-7 is an old system. Many commentators tend to say that because it is old, its battery might lack adequate charge to activate the system, acquire a target and initiate the launching. In other words, old SA-7s might not fire. That may be so, but there is ample evidence that many old SA-7s do in fact fire, as was seen last year in Libya, where SA-7s from the 1980s were captured by fighters opposed to Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi and fired several times

ISTANBUL // Syria [ REBELS ??? ] intentionally shot down a Turkish jet in international airspace with a missile on Friday, Turkey's vice prime minister said yesterday

Bulent Arinc told the cabinet: "The facts in our possession show that our plane was hit by a heat-seeking guided laser missile."

And Mr Arinc told a televised news conference yesterday that Syrian forces fired on a second Turkish plane that was searching for the wreckage of the downed RF-4E reconnaissance jet.

The US Must Supply anti-Aircraft Missiles to the Syrian Opposition

The US Must Supply anti-Aircraft Missiles to the Syrian Opposition
 by Joshua Landis
 October 22, 2012

The US government should tell Assad that he must launch serious negotiations for a transition government. If he does not, Western governments should supply opposition militias with ground to air missiles in sufficient numbers to bring down the Syrian air-force. Circumstantial evidence suggests that US officials in Libya may already have been working to facilitate the transfer of portable heat-seeking missiles—the bulk of them SA-7s—from Libya to Syria.

As soon as the elections are over in the US, Washington should redouble its efforts at changing the balance of power in Syria, if Assad does not begin to form a transitional government in earnest.  He must come to terms with the most powerful rebel leaders or see his air force neutralized

Democrat Menendez introduces bill in Senate to arm Syria opposition

Democrat Menendez introduces bill in Senate to arm Syria opposition

A top Senate Democrat nudged the Obama administration to provide weapons to the Syrian opposition, introducing a bill Monday that would explicitly allow the U.S. to provide arms, military training and non-lethal aid to the rebels.

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, introduced the legislation on the heels of U.S. intelligence claims that chemical weapons likely were used in the country.

"The Assad regime has crossed a red line that forces us to consider all options," Menendez said in a written statement. "The greatest humanitarian crisis in the world is unfolding in and around Syria, and the U.S. must play a role in tipping the scales toward opposition groups and working to build a free Syria."

President Obama has called the use of chemical weapons a "red line," but in light of the latest intelligence assessment he has urged caution - saying investigators don't yet know enough for the findings to warrant a specific U.S. response.

The administration, though, has said it is considering arming the opposition.

This is a step some lawmakers, like Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., have been urging the U.S. to take for months. But amid claims that extremist elements have infiltrated parts of the anti-Assad forces, any effort to arm the groups would come with inherent risk that weapons could fall into the wrong hands.

Menendez's office claimed his bill would require any group receiving arms to go through a "thorough vetting process." Without getting into detail, his office said those groups would have to "meet certain criteria on human-rights, terrorism, and non-proliferation."

The bill also would create a $250 million fund to assist the country in a transition after the end of the Assad regime. The measure would give the U.S. government the power to sanction any individual who sells or transfers military equipment, weapons or oil to Assad.

The legislation was introduced amid conflicting accounts over the investigation into chemical weapons use.

Carla Del Ponte, a member of the U.N. commission looking into the alleged use of the nerve gas sarin in Syria, said Sunday that opposition forces - and not the Assad regime -- may have been the ones who used the weapons. According to Reuters, she told Swiss-Italian television there are "strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof" of sarin gas being used. She said it was "on the part of the opposition, the rebels, not by the government authorities."

But the White House and Pentagon sharply challenged the claim.

"The commission has not reached any conclusive findings. The fact of the matter is that we are highly skeptical that the opposition has used chemical weapons," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said Monday.

He claimed it's most likely the Assad regime was behind any weapons use.

The U.N. commission investigating the attacks also watered down Del Ponte's comments in a written statement Monday, as they came under increasing scrutiny. The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic said it "wishes to clarify that it has not reached conclusive findings as to the use of chemical weapons in Syria by any parties to the conflict."

Carney said the U.S. is still looking for conclusive evidence about chemical weapons use in Syria. He said there is no timeline for the investigation.
Secretary of State John Kerry was leaving for Moscow on Monday to discuss the situation in Syria with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"We have consistently, in our conversations with the Russians and others, pointed clearly to Assad's behavior as proof that further support for the regime is not in the interest of the Syrian people or in the interest of the countries that have in the past supported Assad," Carney said. "We have been clear in the past about our disappointment with Russia over their opposition to resolutions at the Security Council with regards to this matter. But this is an ongoing conversation."

Egypt, Arab League condemn Israeli 'attacks' in Syria
http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/egypt-arab-league-condemn-israeli-attacks-in-syria.aspx?pageID=238&nID=46282&NewsCatID=352

Egypt on Sunday condemned Israeli air strikes on Syria, with the Arab League also demanding that the UN Security Council act to stop what it called "Israeli attacks" against the war-torn country.

The Egyptian presidency said in a statement the air strikes "violated international law and principles that will further complicate the situation." The raids reportedly targeted rockets destined for Lebanon's Hezbollah.

The Arab League, which like Egypt sides with rebels against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, demanded the Security Council "act immediately to end Israeli attacks on Syria," which it called a "dangerous violation of an Arab state's sovereignty." The presidency in Cairo affirmed "its extreme opposition" to the Syrian regime's brutal crackdown on rebel-held areas, but accused Israel of "exploiting its internal conflict".

A senior Israeli source said an overnight aerial assault hit Iranian weapons destined for the Hezbollah, which is closely allied to the Syrian regime.

A diplomatic source in Beirut told AFP three sites were targeted -- a military facility, a nearby weapons depot and an anti-aircraft unit in Sabura, west of the capital Damascus.

Maybe next time these pathetic house Arabs will think twice before backing a western coup over a stable Middle Eastern country. It's a bit late complaining now.

The Syrian Insurgent Army/al Qeada/Al Nusra has kidnapped 4 UN Peacekeepers "for their own safety".

UNITED NATIONS - An armed group on Tuesday abducted four UN peacekeepers in the Golan Heights which has been hit by a mounting spillover from the Syrian civil war, the United Nations said.

The four were patrolling near the Al Jamlah locality in the ceasefire zone between Israel and Syria where 21 peacekeepers were seized by Syrian rebels in March, said a UN peacekeeping spokeswoman, Josephine Guerrero. — AFP

Syria crisis: UN peacekeepers seized on Golan Heights
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-22435393

Four Filipino UN peacekeepers have been abducted by armed men while patrolling in the demilitarised area between Syria and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

UN spokesmen said efforts were "under way to secure their release now".

A Syrian rebel group, the Martyrs of Yarmouk, published a photo purportedly showing the four men and said they were being held for their own safety.

It said there had been clashes and heavy shelling in the Yarmouk Valley, in the south of the separation zone.

The heavy presence of Syrian government forces posed a danger to the peacekeepers, as well as "criminal elements" in the area, it added.

In March, the Martyrs of Yarmouk detained 21 UN observers from the Philippines, before releasing them three days later.

The referenced capture is from the video linked below. If you cannot get that exact frame to pause well enough to be captured, it is because your computer is not able to handle the distraction of the pause button while playing video - pull the video into an editor to grab the frame if this happens
It is fairly easy to prove the blast was a nuclear air burst with terms anyone can understand.

Many people said the blast could not have been nuclear because the color was wrong. But a frame analysis of the exact frame that captured the initial blast proves the camera maxed out in all 3 color channels, which by itself proves the blast was nuclear. Further analysis proves the camera captured more blue than any other color. The following eyedropper sample of the explosion from an un edited frame capture proves the camera went to 255 in all 3 color channels across a majority of the frame, which is the maximum value a camera can record, or pure white.

When using levels, we once again see that the camera recorded it's maximum in all 3 color channels across the majority of the frame, with values below 255 in all 3 color channels being represented by black, with the red channel not clipped out in some of the frame appearing as red, and red and green approaching clip out appearing as yellow in some of the frame. So what we have here is an image that is entirely clipped to full white in a majority of the frame straight out of the camera, with absolutely no image data recorded other than white. This is only possible with a nuclear weapon, you cannot just clip an image white in all 3 color channels from one edge of the frame to the other with a conventional light source.

Turkish PM calls Israel's Syria strikes 'unacceptable'
By CNN Staff

http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/07/world/meast/syria-civil-war/index.html

(CNN) -- Turkey's prime minister, a staunch critic of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, on Tuesday called Israel's recent airstrikes in Syria "unacceptable."

Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the statement in the capital, Ankara, during a Justice and Development Party group meeting in parliament.

"The air attack by Israel on Damascus is unacceptable. No rationale, no reason can excuse this operation. These attacks are a bargaining chip, an opportunity delivered on a silver platter to the hands of Assad, to the illegitimate Syrian regime," he said.

The headline doesn't match the report:  from 'to permit' to 'reportedly allows'.  Plus, JPost is still calling the bombing 'alleged Israeli'.  However, this article points toward the plan of Israel's continued involvement in the conflict.  As the Western, NATO nations fund and arm al Qaeda/Al Nusra, Israel (and likely Jordan and Saudi) will fight a 'righteous' war against the 'terrorists'.

'Syria to permit Palestinians to attack from Golan'
By JPOST.COM STAFF, ARIEL BEN SOLOMON, REUTERS
05/07/2013 14:45
http://www.jpost.com/Defense/Report-Syria-to-permit-Palestinians-to-attack-from-Golan-312365

Assad reportedly allows Palestinian factions to attack Israel.

Following alleged Israeli air strikes on Syria over the weekend, Syrian authorities were planning to allow Palestinian resistance factions to work across the Syrian border of the Golan Heights to carry out attacks against Israel, Syrian daily Al Watan reported Monday.

According to the report, the initiative was due to be discussed in upcoming meetings between Syria and Palestinian faction leaders, said Khalid Abd al-Majid, secretary- general of the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front.

In light of recent developments, Syria had the "right and duty to respond using all available means," Majid was reported as saying.

Syria's pro-government Al-Ikhbariya television gave an indication of what Assad might be considering, quoting unnamed sources who said that Syrian rockets were ready to strike targets inside Israel in the event of any new attack.

It also said Syria had given the green light to Palestinian factions to carry out operations against Israel from across the Golan Heights.

However, neither of those warnings have been spelled out publicly by Syrian officials, and any direct Syrian rocket fire on Israel would be likely to provoke an overwhelming Israeli response.

Perhaps ironically, the step that Assad could take in the Golan that might most alarm Israel would be to retreat from it.

Through four decades of official hostility with Israel, Assad and his father before him kept the Golan Heights frontier quiet. Were Assad to pull back troops, Israel is worried that the heights it captured from Syria in 1967 could become a springboard for attacks on Israelis by the jihadi rebels who are currently battling to topple Assad.

"I would not be surprised if the Assad regime begins the process of pulling out its forces from the Golan to Damascus," Fawaz Gerges, director of the Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics..."The (rebel) Nusra Front and other groups are preparing themselves for the ultimate war against Israel...so this would create a strategic predicament for Israel."

A Western diplomat in the region said that if the Nusra Front gained territory on the Golan Heights it would inevitably suck Israel deeper into to conflict.

"They will not accept that Islamist extremists gain ground," he said.

Syria 'disappears' from the Internet, security firm says

Syria 'disappears' from the Internet, security firm says

Internet traffic to and from Syria, which is in the midst of a civil war, appears to have dried up.

At around 18:45 GMT Tuesday, “OpenDNS resolvers saw a significant drop in traffic from Syria. On closer inspection it seems Syria has largely disappeared from the Internet,” Umbrella Security Labs said in a blog post Tuesday.

Data from Google seemed to confirm some sort of disruption to the country’s Internet services. As of 2 p.m. Pacific Time Tuesday, all Google’s services in the country had been unavailable for about two-and-a-half hours, Google said on its transparency report website.

Routing on the Internet relies on the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), which distributes routing information and makes sure Internet routers know how to get to certain IP addresses, Umbrella explained. “Currently there are just three routes in the BGP routing tables for Syria, while normally it’s close to eighty,” the company said.

While traffic to and from the country appeared severely disrupted, Umbrella said it was unclear if Internet services within Syria were still available.

“Effectively, the shutdown disconnects Syria from Internet communication with the rest of the world,” the company said.

Syria has been embroiled in civil war for three years, with rebels battling the government of President Bashar al-Assad. The conflict has escalated in recent days, with accusations of chemical weapons use, and on Sunday Israel launched air attacks on the Syrian capital, Damascus.

“Although we can’t yet comment on what caused this outage, past incidents were linked to both government-ordered shutdowns and damage to the infrastructure, which included fiber cuts and power outages,” Umbrella said.

So like are the hardcore "islamic rebels" in bed with Israel ?

The Israelis totally depend on Islamic elements for there existence. An Israel surrounded by stable secular muslim countries, would only serve to weaken its position in the UN. No more could they use the clarion call of "we'r surrounded by enemies" to muster billions of US tax dollars and hold the world to ransom. Israel is a paradox, it only exists because its under threat. If Egypt, Syria, Jordon and the Lebanon became secure white Anglo Saxon, Christian, westernised democracies tomorrow do you think they could continue to treat the Palestinians the way they do? If the Palestinians themselves were replaced with w.a.s.p's who peacefully demanded a Palestinian state do you really believe the Israelis would grant it to them? Do you believe they would stop stealing land and building illegal settlements for the sake of white Christians and leave the occupied territories? Israel wants "living space".

Was there any unusual radio noise observed during or after the attack? It looks much more like a thermobaric device.

Jim Stone claims the video evidence (coupled with the time it took for the sound wave to reach the camera after the visual) indicates a low-yield nuclear device.

Not that I wouldn't put it past Israel to do such a thing, but coming with the light generated in the blast would have been a considerable pulse of electromagnetic radiation, even with a small nuclear device, and that would have shown up as noise in the video image the camera shot.

What amazes me is the thin media coverage there is to be had about this, This is a declaration of war by Israel on Syria, very bold
It seems they used a very special DU type bomb(s), (to take out a bunker?) or (the large explosion was Syrian ordinance? ) and it's like it never happened.

Israel asks Russia not to sell Syria advanced S-300 air shield: officials
By Dan Williams
JERUSALEM | Thu May 9, 2013 11:36am EDT

(Reuters) - Israel has asked Russia not to sell Syria an advanced air defense system which would help President Bashar al-Assad fend off foreign military intervention as he battles a more than two-year-old rebellion, Israeli officials said on Thursday

Citing U.S. officials, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday that Israel had told Washington that Syria had already began payments for a $900 million purchase of the S-300 and an initial delivery was due within three months.

The S-300 is designed to shoot down planes and missiles at 125-mile (200-km) ranges. It would enhance Syria's current Russian-supplied defenses, which did not deter Israel from launching devastating air strikes around Damascus last weekend.

"We have raised objections to this (sale) with the Russians, and the Americans have too," an Israeli official told Reuters.

There was no immediate comment from Moscow or Damascus

Israel deploys Iron Dome in North amid Syria tensions

By YAAKOV LAPPIN

05/05/2013 13:52

The IDF has deployed two Iron Dome batteries to northern cities due to regional tensions following air strikes in Damascus which foreign sources have attributed to the Israel Air Force.

In recent days, one battery has been stationed in Haifa, while another has been placed in Safed, a senior defense source said. The source stressed that "this is not the first time that the systems have been deployed to the North."
...
Meanwhile, Iran condemned an Israeli attack on Syria and urged countries in the region to stand against the action, the Fars news agency reported on Sunday.

Israel carried out its second air strike in days on Syria early on Sunday, a Western intelligence source said, in an attack that shook Damascus with a series of powerful blasts and drove columns of fire into the night sky.

Israel declined to comment, but Syria accused the Jewish state of carrying out a raid on a military facility just north of the capital.

'Israel hit Syria ... '

LAST UPDATED: 05/05/2013 11:19
BEIRUT - Israeli jets bombed Syria on Sunday, rocking Damascus for hours and sending pillars of flame into the night sky in what a Western source called a new strike on Iranian missiles bound for Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Local people reported massive explosions and internet video showed the capital's skyline lit by flashes; Syrian opponents of President Bashar Assad rejoiced at Israel's third raid this year, and second in 48 hours, while anger in Tehran highlighted how Syria's civil war risks spinning further beyond its borders.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FMZ8VKybM0&feature=player_embedded

Israel, while declining to confirm the strike, stressed its focus was to deny its Lebanese foes new Iranian firepower and not take sides between Assad, long seen as a toothless adversary, and rebels who have won sympathy from Israel's Western allies but who also include al-Qaida Islamists hostile to the Jewish state.
...
Syrian state television said the bombing around a military research facility at Jamraya caused "many civilian casualties and widespread damage" and quoted a letter from the foreign minister to the United Nations saying: "The blatant Israeli aggression has the aim to provide direct military support to the terrorist groups after they failed to control territory."
Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty: For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole ; He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee. - Job 5

Quote
At first I thought PressTV was compromised and therefore not reporting this. But now, after going to the scene and speaking to top weapons experts who went to the scene of the nuclear bombing in Syria, ALL CONCUR: There is no doubt nuclear weapons were used, including at least one ground penetrating nuke, and that the use of nuclear weapons is irrefutable.

The following is quoted from PressTV:

Striking evidence of the use of American EPW (Earth Penetrating Weapons) nuclear weapons in Syria has come to light. Experts say the proof is irrefutable.

Dramatic video footage from Syria has revealed startling evidence that counters Israel’s claims of “surgical strikes” on weapons headed to Lebanon.

What were said to be air strikes is now proven to have actually been artillery, something easily discernible to even an untrained observer.

What happens next is shocking. While artillery shells rain down on Syrian army positions, mobile Israeli artillery in direct support and even accompanying rebel forces inside Syria, a huge explosion occurs.

After analysis, it had become clear, Syria had come under attack by Israel using, not just nuclear weapons, but an American nuclear bunker buster bomb, one of several supplied to Israel to use against Iran, one of the last acts of the Bush/Cheney administration.

Submitted for analysis, the footage was compared with tests of the 37,000-pound MOB (Massive Ordnance Penetrator), designed by Boeing to be used against Iran’s underground facilities. There was no similarity whatsoever noted between the Syrian “event” and a conventional “bunker buster” including the GBU 57, the largest conventional weapon ever to be used." End quote.

...

Don´t fall for the lies about a weapons cache exploding, about a MOAB, or depleted uranium nonsense. Depleted uranium is a tank penetrator, NOT A BOMB MATERIAL. This nuclear detonation clipped every camera sensor site to maximum value full white, EVEN IN THE SHADOWS ON THE GROUND from a proven distance of 3.8 kilometers. The damage zone at Hiroshima was 1.6 kilometers surrounding the blast. This syria nuke did not go off where the flames are in the video, it went off 3 km farther away, on the OTHER SIDE of the mountain. The manner in which the camera sensor clipped out proves that the brightness of the flash was many times brighter than full sunlight. It is easily proven, just download the video, capture the moment of criticality frame and start doing eyedropper samples with any photo editor and LOOK AT THE VALUES THAT COME UP. Try to find one of the scamming alternative media sites that 1. tells you the real distance to the big blast (can be determined by the sound delay in the video) and 2. shows you the moment of criticality frame. ALMOST ALL ARE LYING ABOUT THIS. LITMUS TEST TIME.

Syria conflict: BBC shown 'signs of chemical attack'

The BBC has been shown evidence apparently corroborating reports of a chemical attack in Syria last month.

A BBC correspondent who visited the northern town of Saraqeb was told by eyewitnesses that government helicopters had dropped at least two devices containing poisonous gas.

The government has vehemently denied claims it has used chemical agents.

The US has warned that such a development would be a "red line" for possible intervention.

However, President Barack Obama has said the current intelligence on possible chemical weapon usage did not constitute sufficient proof.

Russian Pacific Fleet Warships Enter Mediterranean For First Time In Decades, To Park In Cyprus

...few hundred miles from Syria. Wink Wink.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-05-16/russian-pacific-fleet-warships-enter-mediterranean-first-time-decades

Earlier we reported that the US has now officially landed a Marine force in Israel as well as an assault ship, in a visit that the US Navy promptly assured "is not associated with, nor a reaction to, any world events." It seems we were not the only ones who read this justification somewhat skeptically: so did Russia. And in a historic event, the Russian Pacific fleet, for the first time in decades, crossed the Suez Canal and entered the Mediterranean, direction Cyprus' port of Limasol (hi Cyprus - Russia will be arriving shortly) in what is now the loudest implied warning to the US and Israel amassing military units across Syria's border that Russia will not stand idly by as Syria is used by the Israeli "Defense" Forces for target practice. “The task force has successfully passed through the Suez Channel and entered the Mediterranean. It is the first time in decades that Pacific Fleet warships enter this region,” Capt. First Rank Roman Martov said. This is what is also known as dropping hints, loud and clear.

The group, including the destroyer Admiral Panteleyev, the amphibious warfare ships Peresvet and Admiral Nevelskoi, the tanker Pechenga and the salvage/rescue tug Fotiy Krylov left the port of Vladivostok on March 19 to join Russia’s Mediterranean task force.

The task force currently includes the large anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, the frigate Yaroslav Mudry, the salvage/rescue tugs Altai and SB-921 and the tanker Lena from the Northern and Baltic Fleets, as well as the Ropucha-II Class landing ship Azov from the Black Sea Fleet. The task force may be enlarged to include nuclear submarines, Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov said last Sunday.

It appears that the squadron is being reincarnated and quite rapidly at that.

It also appears that the two key naval forces in the Mediterranean are finally starting to position themselves for what may soon be a face off.

Number of Syrian refugees tops 1.5 million: UNHCR

(Reuters) - More than 1.5 million people have fled Syria as conditions there deteriorate rapidly, the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) said on Friday.

The exodus has accelerated over the past four months and the agency estimates that nearly 1 million refugees have registered since January, U.N. officials said.

"The fact that more than 1.5 million have registered or have appointments with UNHCR sadly means the actual number is much higher," UNHCR said in a statement, without giving an estimate for the total.

"Refugees tell us the increased fighting and changing of control of towns and villages, in particular in conflict areas, results in more and more civilians deciding to leave," it said.

Most of the refugees have fled to neighboring Lebanon and Jordan where UNHCR said it had counted 470,457 and 473,587 respectively this week.

Syria's population is 23 million.

Newest Russian arms shipment to Syria ‘destabilises’ area, Livni says

(JTA) — Israeli Justice Minister Tzippi Livni warned that “Israel has a right to defend itself” in the wake of reports that Russia provided advanced naval missiles to Syria.

“We see that Syria is disintegrating and a weapons shipment is certainly not a positive development, it destabilizes the area,” Army Radio quoted Livni as saying in reaction to a New York Times report Friday that Russia has sent advanced antiship Yakhont cruise missiles to Syria.

She added: “Israel has a right to defend itself. Elaborating on this issue is ill-advised.”

According to the Times, quoting U.S. intelligence sources, the Yakhonts recently delivered to Syria are equipped with advanced radar, making them more effective than earlier batches sent by Russia to Syria.

“It enables the regime to deter foreign forces looking to supply the opposition from the sea, or from undertaking a more active role if a no-fly zone or shipping embargo were to be declared at some point,” said Nick Brown, editor in chief of IHS Jane’s International Defense Review. “It’s a real ship killer.”

Russia boosts fleet off Syria

RUSSIA has sent a dozen or more warships to patrol waters near its naval base in Syria, a build-up that US and European officials see as a new, aggressive stance meant partly to warn the West and Israel not to intervene in Syria's bloody civil war.

Russia's expanded presence in the eastern Mediterranean, which began attracting US officials' notice three months ago, is one of its largest sustained naval deployments since the Cold War. While Western officials say they don't fear an impending conflict with Russia's aged fleet, the presence adds a new potential source of dangerous miscalculation in an increasingly combustible region.

"It is a show of force. It's muscle flexing," a senior US defence official said.

"It is about demonstrating their commitment to their interests."

The build-up is seen as Moscow's way of trying to strengthen its hand in any talks over Syria's future and buttress its influence in the Middle East. It also provides options for evacuating tens of thousands of Russians still in Syria.

Russian navy and foreign ministry officials did not respond to requests for comment.
