Videogame sales fall 23% in July

Sales of videogame software at retail outlets fell by 23% in the month of July compared to the same period last year, according to data from the NPD Group on Thursday afternoon.

Sales of game hardware fell by 32% for the same period.

It was the eighth consecutuve month of double-digit declines in software sales measured by NPD, though July's results were roughly in line with analysts' expectations.

The top-selling games for the month were: "NCAA Football 13" from Electronic Arts, "Lego Batman 2" from Warner Bros. and "The Amazing Spiderman" from Activision Blizzard.

NPD results do not include sales of games over digital channels.
