Hwy 82 Witchita Falls,TX...WTF? This is a Sheriff in a light armored tank with a gun turret pulling people over for speeding. Flashing red/blue lights and all. I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. We are so screwed!

The Wichita County Sheriff's office has an LAV for SWAT assistance... it's not a tank and there is no gun on the turret, just a light.  The unit had a flat tire and the red truck is there to help.

Here's the vehicle up close without a flat...

Peace sells, but who's buying?

Regardless of what was going on, what the hell do they need a light armored vehicle for and if you stick a gun out of the turret, doesn't become a gun turret?

What ever happened to armored step side vans. They were perfectly exceptable for special police units but I guess not for paramilitary units.

The Reutilization program allows for the repurposing of vehicles that are no longer in service for the Army.  Be it from damage (and now they're refurbished), end of life, or whatever, they basically give them to domestic law enforcement and other groups if they agree to fund their own repairs and maintenance (among other strings, I would imagine).

I agree, it is overkill, but given the purpose of SWAT assistance and emergency rescue, it's not a bad deal for local jurisdictions... since they could not afford such a vehicle otherwise.

HOWEVER, this is just another aspect of the militarization of local police.  It is also evidence that the Army has found a creative way to allow contractors to reap additional profits by disposing of otherwise salvageable vehicles... prompting new contracts and guaranteed revenue for special friends of the upper brass.

IF these vehicles are indeed no longer "battle worthy", they should be sold as-is at auction... not repaired and given to law enforcement with strings attached.

No shit.  I wouldn't mind having an LAV and a Humvee... even if it they are a little sand-encrusted and riddled with 7.62x39 holes in the outer armor Cheesy

You can buy them, if your in the mob basically. I tried several times at these auctions only to be pushed out saying it was private auction when it was not or rescheduled. Two big goomba's generally found at the entrance .

You know what the funny and maybe just a little sad thing here is? Before their domestication by the Romans sheep were regarded as one of the more aggressive and free spirited creatures on this planet, sound familiar anyone?

I mod custom gaming PCs for a living and I have built some insane ones AND I can weld!  I could have some serious fun with a few of these.

One would be to cut 3 of them down and make a LIMO.

I would beef up 2 and use for "protection".

FB allows you to "tag" photos with links to people on your friends list.  Apparently the person who posted the picture "tagged" it for some stupid reason.
