5 Shot, 2 Dead During New Year’s Eve Celebration In Old Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – The New Year’s Eve celebration in Old Sacramento was violently interrupted by a wild scene on Monday night when five people were shot, including at least two people who died.

The violence erupted in the 1000 block of 2nd Street at the Sports Corner Cafe at about 9:38 p.m., according to the Sacramento Police Department. It wasn’t clear if the shootings happened inside or in front of the establishment.

The extent of the injuries for the others shot wasn’t immediately available and no details were provided on what triggered the shooting. Police didn’t provide any suspect information or confirm any arrests, but several witnesses told CBS13 a man was taken into custody.

“They had one person in an ambulance and one person in a cop car,” one woman said.

“I saw the gun in the hand. He was just screaming and shooting,” another woman said.

Some 40,000 people, including lots of families with young children, had gathered in Old Sac for a 9 p.m. fireworks show shortly before the shots rang out. Another fireworks show scheduled for midnight was canceled. A Sacramento Police helicopter circled overhead to announce the midnight cancellation.

Mounted police, patrol cars and Sacramento Fire trucks converged on the scene as thousands of spectators were blocked off from the crime scene.

Witnesses described hearing several shots and then running for cover.

“Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop,” one witness said. “It sounded like a Glock.”

How the f**k can you tell a Glock 9mm from a S&W 9mm or a Taurus 9mm.  Unless you have extensive firearms training most can't tell the dif between a 9mm, 40, 380, 38, or any other large cal handgun cept a 5o and MAYBE a 357.

The skewed idiocy of some of the crap that the wire services allow to make it to print... the morons are still in kindergarten, I swear!

unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed
the dangers which are cited to justify it.”

I hear ya! What stupidity.

You cannot tell what "brand" a gun is in that respect. Sure, an AK is very distinctive (I think it was Eastwood in Hamburger Hill that pointed out the unique sound of an AK), as many other type guns are, but what brand? Uh no. I can tell the differences between caliber of rounds, but not the brand of gun.

I agree, media slugs seem to have tossed out the part of their job where they actually investigate a story and gather facts. Now, it seems articles are nothing more than oped pieces rather than news.

Lol. I was thinking the same thing, if it was a pistol and a shotgun I could tell the difference immediatly. That just sounds like so much B.S, and to have it pinpointed like that. I would just laugh at this person.

Update: Suspect arrested in Old Sacramento shooting that leaves two dead

Two people are dead and three others injured, including a man police have arrested for his part in a wild barroom shootout in Old Sacramento between firework shows.

Sacramento police said at about 9:40 p.m. officers responded to the sound of gunshots in the 1000 block of 2nd Street in the historic district. News reports said the shooting took place at the Sports Corner Cafe, 1030 2nd St. This morning, a trail of blood led away from the bar, which was closed. A man who said he was there to clean it - but would not give his name - said he did not expect it to open today.

Old Sacramento was packed with families who had come for a 9 p.m. fireworks show and other wholesome entertainment. When officers arrived on the scene, they eventually were to find five people shot, two of whom died later on the scene.

Police said the chaotic situation began when an argument erupted at a bar at the corner of 2nd and K streets. The argument then grew into a fight and an employee of the establishment tried to intervene.

Police said that one of the combatants drew a weapon and fired several rounds toward those he was fighting. A 30-year-old woman, a 35-year-old man and an employee of the business in his 20s were hit by gunfire.

The woman, who was hit in her lower body, survived her injuries.

However, the 35-year-old man and the employee did not survive multiple gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead on the scene.

A armed security guard nearby heard the gunshots and confronted the surviving shooter. The two exchanged gunfire inside the bar and both the security guard and the 22-year-old shooter suffered gunshot wounds.

The suspect, now wounded and still armed, ran from the bar into the crowds of families holding the hands of children and pushing baby carriages along the wooden sidewalks of old town in the chilly night air. He was immediately taken into custody by police.

The arrested man, who has not been indentified, was taken to the a hospital for treatment. The security guard was also treated at the hospital.
