In the past few months students across Quebec have demonstrated their strong will and resiliency by protesting in the streets of Montreal the tuition hikes proposed by the Liberal Quebec government. Although one might have a different opinion on government involvement in education and the role that the latter should hold within educational system, supporting the students is necessary.
The necessity emerged when the Charest government implemented legislation within the Quebec parliament to fine protestor up to 5 thousand dollars, fine organizers up to 35 thousand dollars and even more troubling laws that make it illegal to cover ones face in protests.
At first sight, one would think that a masked individual should not be tolerated in an open and free society. A masked individual protesting could be some hooligan attempting to destroy private property or start a riot. Unfortunately, the fact is that we do not live in a free and open society; on the contrary, police across North America have been photographing peaceful protestors and putting them in databases. The latter used to populate No-Fly lists and other secretive government black books. Caught in a protest? Photographed by police? Forget getting that job that requires a background check!
Even more so, endless counts of police brutality and total estimated count of 2000 arrests have only added fuel to the fire. Media has portrayed the students as leftist/communist provocateurs. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. A small percentage of individual are vindicating communist ideologies, however the majority are everyday students with no political affiliations protesting not only for tuition hikes but also against the growing corruption and collusion that is deeply rooted in the big government system that is Quebec.
Whether one is for or against the tuition price increase, supporting freedom of speech and the right to protest is paramount. Today the students, tomorrow libertarians and the day after anyone demanding government accountability or representation.
Steadfast Montreal, do not let a bunch of crony politicians destroy stomp our freedom of speech in the name of security. He who gives up freedom for security will have nether.
