- Why do you want to kill Roark?

I don't want to kill him. I want him in jail, behind bars, locked, strapped, beaten. He'll move as he's told. He'll work as he's told. He'll obey. He'll take orders. What do you think is power? Whips? Guns? Money? You can't turn men into slaves unless you break their spirit. Kill their capacity to think and act on their own. Tie them together, teach them to conform, to unite, to agree, to obey. That makes one neck ready for one leash. You've heard me preaching it for years but you didn't have the wits to know what you were hearing. Why do you suppose I denounced greatness and praised mediocrities like you? Great men can't be ruled. Why did I preach self-sacrifice? If you kill a man's sense of personal value, he'll submit.

All eyes are opened, or opening, to the rights of man. The general spread of the light of science has already laid open to every view the palpable truth, that the mass of mankind has not been born with saddles on their backs, nor a favored few booted and spurred, ready to ride them legitimately

Here's an interview Ayn Rand did with Phil Donahue in 1980:

I think Donahue was admirably cordial and fair-minded towards Rand, even though he obviously disagreed with her on several issues.

I disagree with her on a few issues myself, but I still appreciate the enormous contribution she made to stimulating philosophical thought in this country.

One of my favorite quotes from her is the following:

"Whenever you think that you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong."

Didn't one of her books talk about a town that was run on Georgist economic principles? Some of the LVT funded a jammer that made them invisible to passing aircraft or something, so they wouldn't be bothered by any neighbouring countries (an example of *actual* defense spending that I can get behind).
