The mind-reading gizmo that's cooling football's hottest heads: Manchester City hope to tame stars with former Apprentice contestant's gadget

A Top football club is testing 'mind-reading' headsets designed to improve players' behaviour on and off the pitch.

Coaches at Manchester City hope the high-tech gizmo will calm such hot-tempered players as Italian striker Mario Balotelli and Argentine Carlos Tevez, whose discipline problems have marred the club's Premiership success.

Now the club is experimenting with software marketed by entrepreneur Tre Azam – a former contestant on BBC television's The Apprentice – which aims to improve players' focus and reaction to stress.

Ten players from the reserve teams have been testing the Myndplay technology, which reads their state of mind via a £99 headset, picking up tiny electrical signals emitted by the brain.

Players wearing the headset then play computer games – such as making a character walk across a narrow beam – which can be completed only if they remain calm.

There is no hand-held controller, but progress is determined by how relaxed the players are.

If they get stressed, the character falls and they have to start again.

Mr Azam, who starred in the third series of The Apprentice in 2007, said Manchester City's coach Tony Faulkner approached him about the device.

Mr Azam said: 'Players often respond to high-pressure situations on the pitch with an instinctive reaction.

'If they have problems controlling their temper, that response might be to lash out.

'If players can gain control of their emotions, when they face provocation on the pitch, taking an extra second or breath could improve the outcome and stop them getting sent off.'

A club spokesman said: 'We don't want to comment on this. If the situation changes and we are ready to take this product beyond a trial, that will change.

'We trial dozens of products with dozens of companies over the course of the year and a lot of those trials come to nothing.'

Myndplay Exerorcism Movie Demo at the Gadget Show Professional 2011

Quote
This video is a demonstration of controlling the action and outcome of a horror movie through the monitoring of alpha and beta brainwaves. Successful levels of attention to the action result in a successful exorcisim, partial success simply transfers the demon into a friends body and total lack of attention fails to remove the demon. An illustration of the potential of audience engagement in shaping new genres of movies
