CHARDON, Ohio --  Four students have been injured in a shooting this morning at Chardon High School.

According to the Geauga County Sheriff's office and the FBI, a suspect has been arrested. Scott Wilson of the FBI said that at this point they believe there was only one shooter, but the incident remains under investigation.

The youth who was arrested had fled the high school building, but was caught on Woodin Road in Chardon Township, a law officer said. The boy is being processed at the sheriff's office, according to reports about 9 a.m.

Both the sheriff's office and Wilson declined to provide further detail of the events that unfolded in the high school cafeteria about 7:45 a.m.

A local official said three boys and a girl were injured. Four ambulances -- from Chardon, Kirtland, Burton and Chesterland -- arrived at the school just after 8. Sources said three of the students were flown to the trauma center at MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.

As the nation debates whether more guns or fewer can prevent tragedies like the Virginia Tech Massacre, a notable anniversary passed last month in a Georgia town that witnessed a dramatic plunge in crime and violence after mandating residents to own firearms.

In March 1982, 25 years ago, the small town of Kennesaw – responding to a handgun ban in Morton Grove, Ill. – unanimously passed an ordinance requiring each head of household to own and maintain a gun. Since then, despite dire predictions of "Wild West" showdowns and increased violence and accidents, not a single resident has been involved in a fatal shooting – as a victim, attacker or defender.

The crime rate initially plummeted for several years after the passage of the ordinance, with the 2005 per capita crime rate actually significantly lower than it was in 1981, the year before passage of the law.

Prior to enactment of the law, Kennesaw had a population of just 5,242 but a crime rate significantly higher (4,332 per 100,000) than the national average (3,899 per 100,000). The latest statistics available – for the year 2005 – show the rate at 2,027 per 100,000. Meanwhile, the population has skyrocketed to 28,189.

By comparison, the population of Morton Grove, the first city in Illinois to adopt a gun ban for anyone other than police officers, has actually dropped slightly and stands at 22,202, according to 2005 statistics. More significantly, perhaps, the city's crime rate increased by 15.7 percent immediately after the gun ban, even though the overall crime rate in Cook County rose only 3 percent. Today, by comparison, the township's crime rate stands at 2,268 per 100,000.

Fact Sheet: Guns Save Lives

A. Guns save more lives than they take; prevent more injuries than they inflict

* Guns used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Law-abiding citizens use guns to defend themselves against criminals as many as 2.5 million times every year -- or about 6,850 times a day. This means that each year, firearms are used more than 80 times more often to protect the lives of honest citizens than to take lives.

* Of the 2.5 million times citizens use their guns to defend themselves every year, the overwhelming majority merely brandish their gun or fire a warning shot to scare off their attackers. Less than 8% of the time, a citizen will kill or wound his/her attacker.

* As many as 200,000 women use a gun every year to defend themselves against sexual abuse.

* Even anti-gun Clinton researchers concede that guns are used 1.5 million times annually for self-defense. According to the Clinton Justice Department, there are as many as 1.5 million cases of self-defense every year. The National Institute of Justice published this figure in 1997 as part of "Guns in America" -- a study which was authored by noted anti-gun criminologists Philip Cook and Jens Ludwig.

* Armed citizens kill more crooks than do the police. Citizens shoot and kill at least twice as many criminals as police do every year (1,527 to 606). And readers of Newsweek learned that "only 2 percent of civilian shootings involved an innocent person mistakenly identified as a criminal. The 'error rate' for the police, however, was 11 percent, more than five times as high."

* Handguns are the weapon of choice for self-defense. Citizens use handguns to protect themselves over 1.9 million times a year. Many of these self-defense handguns could be labeled as "Saturday Night Specials."


B. Concealed carry laws help reduce crime

* Nationwide: one-half million self-defense uses. Every year, as many as one-half million citizens defend themselves with a firearm away from home.

* Concealed carry laws are dropping crime rates across the country. A comprehensive national study determined in 1996 that violent crime fell after states made it legal to carry concealed firearms. The results of the study showed:

* States which passed concealed carry laws reduced their murder rate by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%; and

* If those states not having concealed carry laws had adopted such laws in 1992, then approximately 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults and over 11,000 robberies would have been avoided yearly.

* Vermont: one of the safest five states in the country. In Vermont, citizens can carry a firearm without getting permission... without paying a fee... or without going through any kind of government-imposed waiting period. And yet for ten years in a row, Vermont has remained one of the top-five, safest states in the union -- having three times received the "Safest State Award."

* Florida: concealed carry helps slash the murder rates in the state. In the fifteen years following the passage of Florida's concealed carry law in 1987, over 800,000 permits to carry firearms were issued to people in the state. FBI reports show that the homicide rate in Florida, which in 1987 was much higher than the national average, fell 52% during that 15-year period -- thus putting the Florida rate below the national average.

* Do firearms carry laws result in chaos? No. Consider the case of Florida. A citizen in the Sunshine State is far more likely to be attacked by an alligator than to be assaulted by a concealed carry holder.

1. During the first fifteen years that the Florida law was in effect, alligator attacks outpaced the number of crimes committed by carry holders by a 229 to 155 margin.

2. And even the 155 "crimes" committed by concealed carry permit holders are somewhat misleading as most of these infractions resulted from Floridians who accidentally carried their firearms into restricted areas, such as an airport.

C. Criminals avoid armed citizens

* Kennesaw, GA. In 1982, this suburb of Atlanta passed a law requiring heads of households to keep at least one firearm in the house. The residential burglary rate subsequently dropped 89% in Kennesaw, compared to the modest 10.4% drop in Georgia as a whole.

* Ten years later (1991), the residential burglary rate in Kennesaw was still 72% lower than it had been in 1981, before the law was passed.

Early Monday afternoon a team of federal agents searched a complex of luxury homes on a lake on a rural road in Chardon.  Agents were from the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Minus the lights and sirens, law-enforcement agencies from across the area were called to Chardon High School last week for a reported "gunman" in the school.

The absence of the lights and sirens was the giveaway that the massing of police at the school meant it was a drill, rather than the real thing.

But, for all intents and purposes, police and school officials took the matter seriously as a way to better prepare in the event that a real threatening situation arises.

Sheriff Daniel C. McClelland, who observed the evacuation, search, standoff and apprehension of two "gunmen" during the three-hour exercise, said evaluators would grade those involved to ensure that law enforcement is prepared to handle a real threat. "This drill is not to traumatize the students, but to practice the techniques," he said.

Students who might struggle with dealing with the experience were given an excused absence, he said, and officials were prepared to halt the exercise if a real emergency arose.

Students and parents were notified ahead of time of the drill through telephone calls from the sheriff's department and letters from the school.

Mr. McClelland said he was grateful to Chardon school officials, who allowed use of the high school, which added a degree of realism to the day. "The lessons learned here can be used throughout the county," he said.

Ellen Ondrey, school communications director, said students were unaware of what time the drill would take place and the details, such as the shots fired.

The drill began shortly after noon with a "gunman" walking into the school and then into a classroom. A student made his way to the office to report the situation.

From there, police sprang into action with Chardon Police Chief Timothy McKenna and Chief Deputy Scott Hildenbrand, of the sheriff's department, setting up a command post outside the school.

Police from Chardon, Mentor, Chester and the Ohio State Highway Patrol began making their way into the building. Mr. McClelland said all officers had their guns checked and bullets removed [WHY?] before entering the school.

He said, as officers make their way in, they may appear "callous" as they walk past students, who may be lying in the halls injured. But he said their first objective is to find the gunman so that further injuries can be avoided.

Mr. McClelland said some of the techniques were developed after 15 people died in the shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. He said iinitial responders formed a perimeter and waited until the special weapons and tactics teams arrived before entering.[/b] "We don't have that luxury," he said.

Within a matter of minutes, police had the first "gunman," but a second "gunman" appeared to have barricaded himself in a classroom with a hostage.

The SWAT team, in a diamond-shaped formation, entered the school to deal with the remaining "gunman," who held one person hostage. Armed with high-tech listening and surveillance equipment, the SWAT team would head negotiations to free the hostage.

For the next two hours, the "gunman" barricaded in a room, played by Chardon Street Supervisor Steven Borawski, held the SWAT team at bay. His hostage was bound in paper towels as Mr. Borawski made demands and told authorities he had gone off his medication.

Mrs. Ondrey said the school has taken its own lessons from a bomb scare about a year ago.

Because many of the students instantly could communicate with parents, many parents began arriving at the school and clogging the side streets. Since then, school officials have taken steps to ensure parents can be kept from the panic of that day.

Also, she said, officials have numbered every door to the school so law enforcement can respond to the proper door if the situation calls for that response.

(Chardon) -- Investigators working Monday's shootings at Chardon High School indicate that it will take time to wrap up the full investigation.  Chardon Chief of Police Tim McKenna says, "Bear with us, we do have a lot of homework to do yet. This investigation will (be) very long."

McKenna stood along with Geauga County Sheriff Dan McClellan and Chardon Superintendent of Schools Joseph Bergant for a news conference Monday afternoon, a little more than eight hours after first responders were called out to the school after the first 911 calls about the shootings.

McClelland says the good thing is that school leaders and police forces had prepared for such a tragedy. "We believe that helped to lessen the tragedy that occurred," McClelland said.

Bergant said that the Chardon Local Schools will be closed Tuesday. He's asking all employees -- except for a few custodial personnel -- to also stay home to reflect on what happened today, and to reflect on family. He said, "If you haven't hugged or kissed your kid in the last couple of days, take that time."  Grief counselsors spent much of Monday at Chardon Middle School, and counselors will also be available on Tuesday.

An Ohio teen described as an "outcast" was in custody late Monday after allegedly targeting his classmates in a fatal shooting at a suburban Cleveland high school.

One Chardon High School student was confirmed dead and named by authorities as 16-year-old junior Daniel Parmertor. Later in the day another victim was reported to have died at a hospital, while three more were being treated for injuries -- one of them in a critical condition.[NOTE: These next three sentences will blow your mind because they each contradict each other, WTF?]
SENTENCE 1:

The suspected shooter was identified by the Cleveland Plain Dealer as Chardon High School student T.J. Lane.

SENTENCE 2:

Authorities have not released the suspected gunman's name because he is a juvenile and has not yet been charged, Chardon Police Chief Tim McKenna said.

SENTENCE 3:

Law enforcement officials described Lane as a "victim of bullying" and an "outcast," WKYC-TV reported.

Nate Mueller, a Chardon junior who was in the cafeteria when the shots were fired, told the Plain Dealer that he saw Lane shooting.

"My friends were crawling on the floor, and one of my friends was bent over the table, and he was shot," Mueller told the paper. "It was almost like a firecracker went off. I turned around and saw [T.J.] standing with a gun and I saw him take a shot."
Why are they putting the name TJ in brackets? Did he say TJ? Was TJ ever a part of the dozens of 'Active Shooter' drills that Chardon has been running? Did his gun have live ammo or fake, did he have a gun? Was it someone that looked like him? Who did the DNA tests? Were any done? WHo did the trajectory tests? Were they done? Two teachers reportedly chased the gunman out of the building, which is located about 30 miles (48km) outside of Cleveland. The gunman was reportedly apprehended by police about one mile (1.6km) from campus shortly after he fled.
Did he have a gun on him? What happened to the teachers who were chasing him? Maybe the cops caught a random student fleeing a New World Order death squad in an American High School? Victims were found in three different locations inside the school, WKYC-TV reported, suggesting the shooter may have targeted and pursued specific people.

In a statement, Parmertor's family called his death a "senseless tragedy."

"Danny was a bright young boy who had a bright future ahead of him. The family is torn by this loss," the statement read.

WOIO-TV reported Monday night that a source close to the investigation had informed the station that a second unidentified student had died at the MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland at around 6:45pm local time, but the report was not confirmed by authorities.

An hour after WOIO's report was published, MetroHealth said in a statement that it was "respecting the privacy of the families" and had no further information.

Tuesday classes throughout the entire Chardon district have been canceled, as residents of the town of about 5,100 grapple with the news.

Jeannette Roth said her son Joshua, a student at the school, told her the shooting happened while students were eating breakfast in the cafeteria. Suddenly a boy "stood up and started shooting, and then it was chaos," Roth told the Plain Dealer.

"Ohio grieves today with the Parmertor family for the tragic loss of their son and brother Danny. It may seem like we're powerless to reach them right now, but the power of our prayer is great and the Lord is reaching out to them now in ways we cannot fathom," Kasich said in a statement.

Chardon, Ohio (CNN) -- A third student has died of wounds suffered in a shooting at a high school in Chardon, Ohio, hospital officials said Tuesday.

Demetrius Hewlin died Tuesday morning, MetroHealth Medical Center said in a statement.
Russell King Jr., 17, was declared brain dead early Tuesday, according to the Cuyahoga County medical examiner's office.

The first victim, student Daniel Parmertor died on Monday.

Prosecutor: School shooter chose victims randomly
   


CHARDON, Ohio (AP) - The Ohio teenager accused of killing three students in a shooting rampage in a high school cafeteria chose his victims at random and is "someone who's not well," a prosecutor said Tuesday as the slightly built young man appeared in juvenile court.

T.J. Lane, 17, admitted taking a .22-caliber pistol and a knife to Chardon High and firing 10 shots at a group of students sitting at a cafeteria table Monday morning, Prosecutor David Joyce said. He said Lane didn't know the victims.

Lane will probably be charged with three counts of aggravated murder and other offenses, the prosecutor said.
