 Instead of depicting a Soviet invasion of the United States as in the 1984 film, the 2012 version's storyline was originally filmed with a Chinese invasion. This was later edited to depict a North Korean invasion in post-production due to concerns from distributors.

It's not China they back down it was pressure from the U.S. government(I try not say our government because the U.S. government no longer works for We the people),  China just pressured the U.S. government which in turn pressured MGM, I always thought it was kind of strange that MGM finishes the Red Dawn remake but before they can release it they go bankrupt so it's sits on shelf for four years, they make huge changes to it using CGI and they wait until after the 2012 election to release it.
