Has anyone installed Windows 7 on their computer? Have you experienced any problems? I just found out that support for Windows XP will end in the next year or two and I may not get needed security updates. I am also considering the Lenox Operating System.

I've been running it since it first came out. No problems whatsoever. It's light years better than Vista. It's Windows Vista, done right. I run 64-bit and everything works. I've never had a compatibility problem.
I also run Ubuntu Linux 11.10. They've made some nice improvements over the years. But unless you're an advanced user, or have experience using Linux, I would stick with the Win7. If you have 4gb or less RAM, then stick with the 32-bit version (since 32-bit can only "see" a max of 4gb). If you have over 4gb of RAM, or think you may buy more RAM in the future, then go 64-bit.

Not only touch, but also Cloud, voice recognition and Kinect ready. It will be to the point if you don't want a mouse or keyboard you won't have to have one. It will also start to interface with all your appliances and RFID chips on products, making virtual grocery lists.

I liked it but found it very slow after a while. It might be my computer or Firefox though because I'm having similar problems after switching back to XP.
Other than that though I'd recommend it.

Maybe better stay on with XP Pro then? I have a smaller laptop a very good machine fast and powerful which I am running on Windows7 family edition - this is what was pre-insalled. What is the story about this StarTrek or bust?

Well March 1st is when the changes take effect-- one agreement to rule them all. Also Google will effectively "steal" all youtube content and claim it as their property. They have a new feature that lets you edit your videos ON youtube... thereby changing your video content into their content. But cliffs modelspace basically says March is when SHTF. Just read his recent post on the subject. http://www.halfpasthuman.com/lastdaysofyourlife.html

Get a copy of a mainstream popular Linux distro. What's the compatability like nowadays? Do a lot of programs run on Linux?

With all the oss out there now, it's actually pretty decent. Check out Distrowatch.com for some new releases.

Thanks. I'll check it out. I'd really like to get away from Windows if possible.

The biggest class of microsoft software that will not run under Linux is Virus and Malware. You can also run an awful lot of windows stuff on a Linux Box using Wine http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_%28software%29You can also run Windows safely as a Virtual Machine, that is a little more complicated to grasp, but for those that can get there head round it, its perfect get out clause. Another way of looking at it, is there is a ton of software that only runs on Linux and either can not run on Windows or if it does its an inferior product.
