China Forced Abortion Opponent Chen Guangcheng Possibly Killed

Reports are emerging today that Chan Guangcheng, a prominent human rights activist who had led the fight against forced abortions under the one-child policy in  China, may have been killed by Chinese officials.

Reggie Littlejohn, president of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, informed LifeNews today that ominous reports regarding blind lawyer Chen Guangcheng have emerged this week and, according to Radio Free Asia, Chinese authorities detained a group of at least nine human rights activists trying to visit Chen.

On Wednesday, many members of the group were cut off from communication and, according to a report by Canyu, Shandong authorities shot at these activists. Voice of America reports that villagers told it “Chen is dead already,” but the media outlet is attempting to verify that claim.

“We are alarmed at the report that villagers are saying that Chen is already dead,” Littlejohn told LifeNews. “If Chen is dead, then the Chinese Communist Party is fully responsible for killing him through torture, denial of medical treatment and slow starvation. If Chen is alive, we urgently demand that he and his family be released immediately and unconditionally, for medical evaluation and treatment.”

Bob Fu, President of the China Aid Association, commented as well, and said, “We are concerned about the report that authorities have shot at the activists trying to visit Chen.”

“These netizens display the same brave spirit that Chen has, and they should continue in their courageous attempts to see him,” he added.

Fu said Gao Zhisheng, another human rights lawyer, has disappeared as well.

“Gao and Chen are shining lights for human rights in China. Their shocking torture and Gao’s disappearance demonstrate the CCP’s willingness to trample on the rule of law,” Fu continued.

Chen exposed the systematic use of forced abortion and involuntary sterilization in implementing China’s One Child Policy. Time Magazine named him in its list of “2006′s Top 100 People Who Shape Our World,” in the category of “Heroes and Pioneers.” He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Earlier this year, the House of Representatives unanimously approved an amendment to its appropriations bill that provides support for Chen Guangcheng, the blind attorney who has campaigned against forced abortions in China. Chen, as LifeNews.com has repeatedly profiled, was jailed for years after officials produced bogus charges. Since his release from prison, Chen and his family have been placed under house arrest and prevented from accessing the outside world and obtaining proper medical care. Human rights groups have been pressing Chen’s case with lawmakers in Congress and got help from pro-life Rep. Chris Smith of New Jersey.

Smith proposed a successful amendment in support of Chen and his wife that lawmakers added to the State Department 2012 appropriation bill.

Chen exposed the fact that there were 130,000 forced abortions and involuntary sterilizations in Linyi County in 2005. The Chinese Communist Party imprisoned Chen for four years and three months and has kept him and his family under strict house arrest since September, 2010. His health has been declining because of malnutrition, intestinal illness, repeated torture and the denial of medical treatment.

Batman Star Christian Bale Attacked for Visiting Chen Guangcheng

Batman movie star Christian Bale traveled nine hours from Beijing to visit blind forced abortion opponent Chen Guangcheng, who has been sentenced to home confinement by local Chinese family planning officials.

Bale never got the chance. He was roughed up and forced away from Chen’s village, according to a CNN report. Bale was in Beijing, China for the premier of “The Flowers of War,” a drama about the 1937 Rape of Nanjing and he decided to break away from the official visit to try to find Chen, who exposed massive campaigns of forced abortions and sterilizations of thousands to the western world several years ago.

Chen was eventually imprisoned for nearly four years on bogus charges and he has repeatedly been beaten and attacked by family planning officials enforcing the nation’s one-child policy since his release. Reports surfaced in recent weeks that Chen had been killed and then new reports claimed he was still alive.

About his attempt to visit Chen, Bale stated, “I’m not brave doing this . . . This was just a situation — I can’t look the other way.”

“What I really wanted to do was shake the man’s hand and say ‘thank you,’ and tell him what an inspiration he is,” Bale said.

Steven Jiang, a Chinese translator accompanying Bale, talked about what happened:

As Christian Bale approached an impromptu checkpoint leading to this tiny village in eastern China, four men blocking the narrow path started marching toward him in menacing unison. “I am here to see Chen Guangcheng,” the “Dark Knight” actor said and I translated, with correspondent Stan Grant and cameraman Brad Olson next to us.

“Go away!” the plainclothes guards barked, pushing us back.

Amid the scuffling and yelling, dozens more guards in olive-green, military-style overcoats — and two gray minivans — emerged from the other side of the checkpoint, all coming toward us. “Why can I not visit this free man?” Bale asked repeatedly, only to receive punches from guards aiming for his small camera as they tried to drag him away from the rest of us.

As we retreated, I recognized the ringleader — the same burly man who had hurled rocks at the CNN team 10 months earlier to force us out of the same location. A precarious scene ensued Thursday as one of the gray minivans chased our car at high speed on bumpy country roads for some 40 minutes. When the dust settled, we counted a broken car, a damaged camera — and a Hollywood star disappointed at — but not shocked by — his failure to see a personal hero.

Detained Human Rights Lawyer Denied Visitors

The Chinese government recently revealed the whereabouts of missing human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng.  Now, his family is demanding confirmation.

Authorities said Gao is being held at a Shaya County prison located in China's remote Xinjiang province.

However, Gao's brother and wife say he is being denied visitors, which makes the family suspicious.

According to Associated Press and China Aid Association reports, relatives who visited the prison Jan. 10 said authorities refused to let them see Gao because he was undergoing a three-month "education period."

“I don’t know what they’re up to, but this seems very wrong,” Gao's wife Geng He said from the U.S., where she now lives.  “And we still have no proof that Gao is actually in that jail.”

China shudders at new enemy: ‘Crazy Crab’

Blind human rights lawyer Chen Guangcheng and his family are illegally detained and tortured for years in rural China – no visitors or witnesses allowed. Art star Ai Wei Wei is arrested on vague changes, his studio closed and staff threatened. Religious leaders, political protestors and human rights activists are arrested, harassed and worse. Chinese border guards border shoot, imprison or enslave starving escapees from North Korea. Even American movie stars are roughed up for asking the wrong questions.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Washington and the global markets continue to play dead for Chinese cash, but some human rights groups, churches, politicians and artists are cranking up the heat and making lots of noise about the abuse. Is anyone listening?

“Crazy Crab” hopes so.

Crazy Crab is a mysterious art persona who began a creative art/protest campaign over the continuing imprisonment and torture of Chen Guangcheng and his family. Keeping the theme of Chen’s iconic sunglasses, he requests that supporters take photos of themselves in dark glasses as gestures of solidarity with the blind lawyer and other political prisoners in China. He is currently manipulating thousands of these images into composite portraits of Chen. They have the street revolution “look” to them that must be making Chinese authorities jittery, but not enough to release Chen yet.

The Chinese government makes me want to puke.

Good Chinese citizens give me hope, though. Kudos to Christian Bale, too.
