SOUTH Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are planning to turn their Tony Award-winning musical The Book of Mormon into a movie.
The play, a satire about two young Mormon missionaries sent to a remote village in Uganda, scooped up nine awards, including Best Musical, at the 65th annual Tony Awards in June, Entertainment Weekly said.
Parker said he and Stone are planning to adapt The Book of Mormon after the show completes a national tour next summer. He said it could be several years before the film version becomes a reality.
Producer Scott Rudin, who worked with the duo on their films South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut and Team America: World Police and produced the Mormon musical, would likely be involved in producing the film version, Stone said.
"The great thing is, a lot of Broadway teams would have to go team up with a Hollywood producer and bring on a Hollywood director, but Trey's a director and Scott's a great producer," said Stone. "We've all made movies. So it's kind of cool, it can stay in the same family."
Park and Stone are currently working on the second half of the 15th season of South Park, scheduled to begin airing on October 5 on Comedy Central.
