Future Congress & the Herescope Controversy

We have received a number of emails and questions about my involvement in the Future Congress, which was put together by Tom Horn and David Hitt. Before the conference took place, there was what appeared to be a “warning” from a website called “Herescope.” While I am not terribly familiar with their position on things, they seem to defend a traditional Biblical view. However, on this issue, I believe they have gone astray. I will attempt to answer some of the primary objections that we have received on the issue.
2012 Prophecy
To get something quickly on the table – none of the teachers at the Future Congress (to my knowledge) believes that “the world will end in Dec. 2012” as has been asserted by some. From what I remember of his book (Apollyon Rising 2012), Tom Horn capitalized on the buzz about 2012 to point people to Bible prophecy and the Gospel. That was why I agreed to write the forward to it.
Genesis 6
The article from “Herescope” is misguided, in my opinion. They are simply against Tom Horn and Chuck Missler because of their interpretation of Genesis 6:2-4 which speaks of how “the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them …” Horn and Missler (along with many others at the Future Congress) believe these passages pertain to fallen angels who joined themselves to mortal women. The offspring of the angels and mortal women were said to be “giants” or in Hebrew, Nephilim. It is generally believed that many of the stories of the Greek and Roman demi-gods (half gods, half men, such as Hercules and Achilles) may have been based on tales of these “giants,” who are said to have been “mighty men which were of old, men of renown.”
The Berean Call carries the documentary, “The UFO Conspiracy” that also teaches this view. Dave Hunt gives a cameo interview in it, and we carry it on our Adullam Films website. Generally, this documentary confronts the UFO phenomena, showing that according to the true scientific evidence (not what is shown on the History Channel), aliens and UFOs are identical to the demons of the ancient world. To this, the leading secular experts in the field of UFO-logy agree, even those who are not necessarily Christian.
In contrast, the Herescope writers seem to embrace the “sons of Seth” view, which argues that the “sons of God” who married the “daughters of men” were the righteous sons of Seth who married the wicked daughters of Cain. How these unions produced “giants” (Nephilim) who were physically larger than ordinary men (and in some cases, malformed as in 2 Sam. 21:20) is not adequately explained. The giants are not only mentioned in Genesis but they show up again when the spies of Israel encounter the “sons of Anak” in Numbers 13:33. This seems to be explained in Genesis where it says the giants showed up “also after that” (Gen. 6:4). Repeatedly, we find David and his mighty men battling giants who seemed unnatural and are always depicted as enemies.
If we believe in all the incredible miracles of the Bible, the stories of God parting the Red Sea, of how angels were manifest as men at Sodom and Gomorrah, that the donkey of Balaam spoke to him, and so forth – why should it seem too incredible that angels may have married mortal women? After all, we have the further account in Jude of “the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation” (Jude 1:6), saying that God keeps them in chains until Judgment Day. What else could this mean?
Teachers like Tom Horn, Chuck Missler (and to a lesser extent, Dave Hunt) hold to the view that the alien phenomena is really a demonic deception that will somehow play into the end time scenario. While I find much of the evidence compelling, it is not something I ordinarily teach on.
Enter the Vatican
To me, the most interesting part of the UFO/Alien controversy is the role that the Vatican plays in all this. Rome’s leading scientists are now arguing that, since it is likely that alien life exists, they say, it is illogical to expect that Jesus is the same way of salvation for both humans and extraterrestrials. Father Giuseppe Tanzella-Nitti from the Pontifical University in Rome has said:
“While Christ is the First and the Last Word (the Alpha and the Omega) spoken to humanity, he is not necessarily the only word spoke to the universe…. For, the Word spoken to us does not seem to exclude an equivalent ‘Word’ spoken to aliens.” (Source: Interdisciplinary Encyclopedia of Religion and Science)
Tanzella-Nitti was a professional astronomer who became a Catholic priest, and is now a professor of fundamental theology at the Pontifical University. The word “pontifical” specifically refers to the Pope. In a brochure promoting the University, Tanzella-Nitti says:
“The University is answering the call of the Holy Father by preparing its students for the New Evangelization.”
Considering all this, is it possible that what we are currently witnessing as “the New Evangelization” will be, at some point, governed by the concept of alien life on other planets? The result of which will be the growing insistence that Jesus cannot possibly be the only way. He must just be one way among many. Hence, the Vatican’s plan for a one-world religion is being furthered by the alien phenomena. If one studies Rome and the world of Astronomy, it will be discovered that, today, the Roman Catholic Church contains the leading experts in the field.
One More Thing …
Tom Horn, David Hitt, and a number of others at the Future Congress are personal friends of mine, and I can testify that as I have known them, they impress me as sincere Christian men. From what I could see of the various presentations at the conference in Branson, the presenters seemed to focus mostly on science, technology and the Bible. Some of what I saw were presentations to strengthen people’s faith by showing the working of God through the universe, mathematics, physics, etc., while other presentations seemed to expose how occult powers manipulate the scientific world toward a wicked end. There were many presentations given, and I only watched a few of them. All in all, most of the people
I encountered were Christians who have an interest in science and technology – something that I confess I do not always understand. I do not believe it is what the Lord has called me to teach on, so I stick to my own topics, and seek to exercise grace and charity toward my brethren in Christ.
