How to Bring About a Police State

Suppose you want to turn a peaceful nice country into a police state.
Here are the steps to take:

1. Gradually erode the role of parents
2. Reduce the morality of the nation gradually
3. As the years go by, each generation gets more and more permissive
4. Get the education system dumbed down
5. Get the TV programmes dumbed down, especially those shown to young people
6. Bring about high unemployment by letting the population get too big, e.g. mass immigration
7. Get the young people more and more frustrated, as each generation grows up they are worse than the previous
8. Ensure kids get what they want, when they want and without any cost to them
9. The youth get very demanding and have no respect for parents and authority
10. Ensure the technology is in place for mass instant communications with encryption
11. Bring about some economic difficulties for a few years
12. After several years/generations of this, eventually you have a restless youth who fear nothing and want everything, are bored, unemployed, restless, without respect for anyone or anything
13. Use agent provocateurs to start a riot
14. Let the police stand by and not do much so they appear too weak to deal with the riots
15. Then the Government can step in and say now we need more powers to the police, with the consent of the greater population, as they want relief from the riots
16. New laws giving greater power to the police and the state will keep the population under control – now you have a police state!

A new Google Group called "London Riots Facial Recognition" emerged online in the wake of the London riots in an effort to identify the perpetrators. The group's reported aim is to use tools similar to Facebook's photo recognition to identify the looters who appear on photos of the riots on the web.  The first discussion in the group was started by the user 'Syd Lawrence', and is followed up by other discussions focusing on accessing the code "Application Programming Interface" (API) for different sites to cropping specific images. However, the most important discussion in the Google Group centers on the legality and ethical challenges of doing "facial recognition", an issue that has led Facebook to receive much criticism and possible investigation from US government officials. Two of the discussions are titled "Ethical Issues" and "Keeping Things Legal." The latter  thread includes a question that asks, "Get police backing?" As of this post, the group was still in the early stages on which steps to take in order to begin 'facial recognition.'

Oh the simple Chav, what a constant source of amusement you are!
Chavs are the dregs of human existence. They live merely to piss everyone else off with their love of crap clothing and manky gold jewellery.
They have taken the wearing of tracksuits and baseball caps to a new level of pikieness.
Chav girls (or chavettes) commonly sport the Croydon Facelift (hair pulled back in a bun so tight that it pulls their faces tight) with at least 6 dangly faux-gold earings in each ear. Also often seen pushing a pram round shopping centers while chain-smoking and wearing fake burberry or nasty velour tracksuits. A favourite accessory is a hideous gold articulated clown dangling from a thick gold chain around their pimply acne scarred necks.
Male chavs hang around in gangs spitting alot and trying to start fights with small children or anyone else that they could easily overpower (which really is just small children!). Once they are of driving age they obtain a clapped out old Nova or Metro and then spend a fortune (no one knows where this money comes from, it is one of the many mysteries of the chav) "maxing it up" with big wheels, sound systems and a huge "wanker pipe" exhaust. Chavs can be seen in any copy of Max Power magazine proudly displaying their efforts at automotive design - tossers !!!

Emerging British subculture which is quickly becoming an epidemic. Chavs can be found the length and breadth of the country, hanging around any junk food outlet, off licence or just hanging around the streets, where they pass the time by vandalising property, drinking cheap cider, shouting abuse at passers by and terrorising old people.

Appearance: Chavs have a strict dress code. Designer labels are everything, although knocked off/fake items are almost de-rigeur. Typically, the male chav will wear a Nickelson or Schott hooded top, baggy tracksuit trousers, white designer trainers, and a baseball cap by burberry or Nike. The female chav (chavette) will have peroxide blonde hair scrunched so tight into a pony tail with colourful scrunchies that her forehead stretches. She will wear a dark blue tracksuit with white stripes, an enormous puffa jacket, hoop earrings, and white trainers. Female chavs are forbidden from wearing socks, and all chavs must wear as much fake gold jewellery as they can fit on their bodies. Mobiles are an added status symbol, and when equipped, the chav must shout into it in the most anti-social way possible, using at least one expletive and the word "innit" per second. Every other word in between should be unrecognisable to non-chavs.

Cars: Typically the Vauxhall Nova, but could include Ford Escort/Orion, Vauxhall Astra, and for chavs with "bling", even a totally shagged 3 series BMW. Whatever the type of car, it must have a spoiler shaped plank.

Commonly thought to be of inferior intellect, the Chavette surprises us with its cunning plan to avoid taking up a professional career and provide itself with free accommodation supplied by tax payers by spawning multi coloured mini chavs at a early stage in life, usually mid teens.
Clearly recognisable by their distinctive tribal Burberry they congregate in town centres and on street corners, Chavs have a reputation of being creative with public property and motor vehicles, building themselves Chaviots out of mechcano sets and strip lighting, and providing us with humorous banta written on toilet walls like ‘Shit’ and ‘Tasha woz ere’ in an attempt to relieve our boredom while urinating.
Their language is a basic form of English thus avoiding any words they cannot spell or pronounce, even to the extent of creating new words only they know the meaning of.
Hunting in large groups Chavs will single out the weakest, smallest prey and attack it without mercy avoiding any personal injury and insuring victory.
Chavs unfortunately don't yet fall into the category of rodent and in effect cannot be bludgeoned to death under the guise of pest control. Darn!-
I think I speak for everyone when I say thank you Chavs for the great contribution you’ve made to this country, you’ve made it what it what it is today – a shit hole.

An independent investigation into the cause of the London riots reveals police planted a bullet and lied about the murder the man that sparked protests that turned into rioting across England.

London Police lied about the circumstances surrounding the shooting of Mark Duggan which have sparked the London riots reveals a much awaited investigation into the shooting.

Police officers said the man who was inside of a cab was shot to death in a gun fight with police officers after the man opened fire  but the investigation into the incident reveals the police lied and the man never opened fire.

Adding to the scandal, the police pointed to a bullet that was lodged into a police radiation that officers reported barely missed a police officer.

Ballistic analysis now confirms that the bullet found in the radio was actually fired from a police issued firearms which means that the police shot their own radio to plant evidence to support their story to cover up their brutal execution of the man.

The incident is also a black eye to the corporate media which has ignored numerous reports about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Instead they have repeatedly acted as a stenographer for the government reporting the man’s death was a result of a gun fight with the police.

  The wording of the first post would give the assmuption the man was armed yet did not fire..The title throws people off a tad, the man did not open fires, as if he was armed but did not shoot.

Do the accelerating information revolutions signal the beginning of a new age? Some key questions which have emerged out of the recent Socratic dialogue:

2. Balance of power shifts. Game changer is that Egypt's army decided not to stand in the way of a million-strong protesters. Will other Arab armies follow that example?

3. Oil drops from two year high: Are markets expecting a reasonably smooth transition to more democratic and therefore more stable governments?

4. UN human rights chief is deeply alarmed by sharp rise in casualties recently, which may be as high as 300 in Egypt. Will bloodshed increase?

5. Egypt is significant: a real trend-setter in the Arab world. Should other Arab regimes watch out, is there a revolutionary wind headed their way?

6. Speak-to-tweet system is live. Google and Twitter have launched a new service via phone which circumvents the ban on net services in Egypt. Switch off voice too?

7. How plausible is it that the Arab revolutions in North Africa will spread to petro-regimes like Saudi Arabia and its GCC neighbours?

8. How do you feel about the revolution-in-air events in Egypt, Tunisia and now Jordan? Where is this headed not just in the Arab world but worldwide?

Information Revolutions and The Future of Power

We are grateful to Dr Joseph Nye, chairman, Trilateral Commission, North America for his submission to ATCA in response to Lord Howell, Herv de Carmoy and our original briefings on digitally driven leaderless revolutions and self-assembling dynamic networks. He writes:

As authoritarian Arab regimes struggle with Twitter, Facebook and Al-Jazeera inflamed demonstrations; Iran tries to cope with the cyber sabotage of its nuclear enrichment program; and American diplomats try to understand the impact of Wikileaks, it is clear that smart policy in an information age will need a more sophisticated understanding of power in world politics.

Power Transition and Power Diffusion

That is the argument of my new book The Future of Power. Two types of power shifts are occurring in this century -- power transition and power diffusion. Power transition from one dominant state to another is a familiar historical event, but power diffusion is a more novel process. The problem for all states in today's global information age is that more things are happening outside the control of even the most powerful states. In the words of Richard Haas, president of the Council on Foreign Relations -- and once a faculty member at the Kennedy School -- 'the proliferation of information is as much a cause of nonpolarity as is the proliferation of weaponry.'

Barbarians and Non-State Actors

Regarding power transition, much attention is lavished on a supposed American decline, and facile historical analogies to Britain and Rome. But Rome remained dominant for more than three centuries after the apogee of Roman power, and even then, it did not succumb to the rise of another state, but died a death of a thousand cuts inflicted by various barbarian tribes. Indeed for all the fashionable predictions of China, India or Brazil surpassing the United States in the next decades, the greater threats may come from modern barbarians and non-state actors. In an information based world of cyber insecurity, power diffusion may be a greater threat than power transition.

Soft Power: Best Story

At an even more basic level, what will it mean to wield power in the global information age of the 21st century? What resources will produce power? In the 16th century, control of colonies and gold bullion gave Spain the edge; 17th century Netherlands profited from trade and finance; 18th century France gained from its larger population and armies; while 19th century British power rested on its primacy in the industrial revolution and its navy. Conventional wisdom has always held that the state with the largest military prevails, but in an information age it may be the state (or non-states) with the best story that wins. Soft power becomes a more important part of the mix.

GDP Growth v Smart Strategies

Today, it is far from clear how we measure a balance of power, much less how to develop successful strategies to survive in this new world. Most current projections of a shift in the global balance of power are based primarily on one factor -- projections of growth in the gross national product of different countries. They ignore the other dimensions of power that are discussed in my book, not to mention the policy difficulties of combining them into smart strategies. For example, while Hu Jintao told the 17th Congress of the Chinese Communist Party that China needs to invest more in its soft power, polls show that China's soft power is limited by a domestic authoritarian regime that puts people like Liu Xiaobo in jail.

Combining Hard and Soft Power Resources

Nation states will remain the dominant actors on the world stage, but they will find the stage far more crowded and difficult to control. A much larger part of the population both within and among countries has access to the power that comes from information. Governments have always worried about the flow and control of information, and the current period is not the first to be strongly affected by dramatic changes in information technology. Revolutions are not new, nor is transnational contagion, nor non-state actors. What is new -- and what we see manifested in the Middle East today -- is the speed of communication and the technological empowerment of a wider range of actors. An information world will require new policies that combine hard and soft power resources into smart power strategies.

Sorry to get off track a bit but I did want to mention that Rupert Murdoch is safe and sound in LA enjoying a steak dinner.  Although I agree with a previous posted when he said these riots do downplay the stock market crash...Murdoch is not the center of attention for his massive scandal in most of the papers.

There are hardly any stories about Murdoch the last 24 hours according to google.  I only found one headline that was serious.

James Murdoch, often mentioned as the heir apparent to his father to eventually run the company, has been tarnished by the mess.  James Murdoch, who has been responsible for News Corp.'s European operations since 2007, approved large settlements to several victims of the phone hacking -- a decision he has said he now regrets because he had insufficient information.

Meanwhile, some investors have demanded action by News Corp.'s board.  They have complained that several of the independent directors are not as independent from Rupert Murdoch as they should be.

For example, a key independent director is Viet Dinh, a Georgetown University law professor who served in former President George W. Bush's Justice Department, is the godfather of a son of Lachlan Murdoch,  Rupert Murdoch's oldest son.  Dinh oversees the company's internal review of the phone hacking scandal, which was expected to be discussed at Tuesday's board meeting.

The menu Monday night included steak, a vegetarian dish and perhaps a little avoidance.

Rupert Murdoch thanked everyone for attending, according to people present.

The 80-year-old patriarch, who hosted the dinner along with wife Wendi Deng, then expressed his gratitude to the spouses for putting up with the long hours and hard work that their mates must put in to be part of the News Corp. family.

But Murdoch only briefly mentioned his British troubles.  He said the problems were isolated to one part of the company  -- and had no effect on the whole.

James Murdoch, who serves on the board and is deputy chief operating officer, was in attendance, as were more than a dozen executives who run key News Corp. operating units, including News Corp. Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey and Chief Financial Officer David DeVoe.

Other News Corp. executives who attended included: Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice; 20th Century Fox Television Studio Co-Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden: Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly; 20th Century Fox Film Production President Emma Watts; Fox Sports Chairman David Hill; Fox Sports Vice Chairman Ed Goren; Fox Sports co-Presidents Eric Shanks and Randy Freer; Twentieth Television President Greg Meidel; and the company's chief human resources officer, Beryl Cook.  Communications executives Teri Everett and Julie Henderson were on hand.

It was unclear whether Wendi Deng served pie for dessert.

This is a great example of how the corporatist media just can't handle anything that deviates from the scripted playbook -- so, in this case, they simply end the interview. You could tell it was going to happen during the first interruption. In PR they call it "refocusing the message", but she failed, so she cut him off. There's just no place for unauthorized/unmanaged information in the corporate media and that's why we all have to stop giving them any money at all.

A police station in Nottingham was firebombed on Tuesday night as violence also hit Liverpool, Leicester, Bristol and Leeds.

Canning Circus police station in Nottingham was attacked by a gang of 30 to 40 men but no injuries were reported, according to Nottinghamshire police. The force said at least eight people were arrested in connection with the attack.

Around the same time, a number of cars were firebombed at a car lot in Carlton Road in the city.

The violence followed the arrest of 10 youths earlier in the evening after a small group of people got on to the roof of one of the buildings at Nottingham High School. In another incident two men, aged 17 and 18, were arrested after rocks were thrown at Bulwell Police Station in the city.

Between 6pm on Monday and 1am on Wednesday, police said they dealt with "well over 1,000" reports of incidents taking place throughout the city and elsewhere, and more than 70 arrests were made. Fires were set in various different locations and police said they had investigated reports that children had been setting trees alight.

A clean-up operation is under way in Leicester after groups of youths attacked buildings in the city centre.

Fourteen people have been arrested, aged between 14 and 50, on suspicion of offences such as criminal damage, burglary and violent disorder.

The disorder was focused on areas including Highcross Shopping Centre, Granby Street, Humberstone Gate and around the cultural quarter.

One nightclub owner has described how gangs smashed windows and looted shops.

Leicestershire Police said large numbers of officers, along with the force helicopter, were deployed to combat the disorder and disperse those causing damage.

Commander Rob Nixon said: "We would like to thank the community for their support during the evening, people have been helping us with our policing operation by passing on any intelligence or rumours they have heard about possible disturbances or criminal acts.

"We would like to reassure the public that we will continue to monitor the situation and carry out high visibility patrols in the city centre and investigate all incidents reported."

James Cockerill, who owns two pubs and a nightclub in the city, said: "There were swarms of hooded Asian, black and white youths in their 20s, and some as young as 12, being hounded out of Leicester city centre at around midnight.

"Thankfully, my businesses - two gay pubs and a gay nightclub - have not been affected, but my staff and managers have barricaded the premises. They were very shaken by what they saw."

Leicester's mayor Sir Peter Soulsby, said he had seen children aged under 12 taking part in the riots.

MANY commentators are on a mission to contextualise the riots that have swept parts of urban London and other British cities.

"It's very naive to look at these riots without the context," says one journalist, who says the reason the violence kicked off in the London suburb of Tottenham is because "that area is getting 75 per cent cuts [in public services]". Others have said the political context for the rioting is youth unemployment or working-class anger at Prime Minister David Cameron's cuts agenda.

"There is a context to London's riots that can't be ignored," says a writer for The Guardian, and it is the "backdrop of brutal cuts and enforced austerity measures". The "mass unrest" is a protest against unhinged capitalism, apparently.

These observers are right that there is a political context to the riots. While the police shooting of young black man Mark Duggan may ostensibly have been the trigger for the street violence, there is a broader context to the disturbances. But they are wrong about what the political context is. Painting these riots as some kind of action replay of historic political streetfights against capitalist bosses or racist cops might allow armchair radicals to get their intellectual rocks off, as they lift their noses from dusty tomes about the Levellers or the suffragettes and fantasise that a political upheaval of equal worth is occurring outside their windows. But such shameless projection misses what is new and deeply worrying about these riots. The political context is not the cuts or racist policing, it is the welfare state, which has nurtured a generation that has no sense of community spirit or social solidarity.
