Free cell phones are now a civil right  

Pennsylvanians on public assistance now have a new 'civil right' -- free cell phones. Meanwhile, the rest of us get to pay higher cell bills as a result.

Recently, a federal government program called the Universal Service Fund came to the Keystone State and some residents are thrilled because it means they can enjoy 250 minutes a month and a handset for free, just because they don't have the money to pay for it. Through Assurance Wireless and SafeLink from Tracfone Wireless these folks get to reach out and touch someone while the cost of their service is paid for by everyone else. You see, the telecommunications companies are funding the Universal Service Fund to the tune of $4 billion a year because the feds said they have to and in order to recoup their money, the companies turn around and hike their fees to paying customers. But those of use paying for the free service for the poor, should be happy about this infuriating situation, says Gary Carter, manager of national partnerships for Assurance, because "the program is about peace of mind." Free cell service means "one less bill that someone has to pay, so they can pay their rent or for day care...it is a right to have peace of mind," Cater explained.

There is nothing free about this. Not only does the cost get handed down to paying cellphone customers and taxpayers (they'll raise the cigarette and beer taxes), but I have a feeling that anybody on public assistance will be required to own one of these "free" cellphones which eavesdrops on them and tracks their every move.

My brother is a homeless alcoholic who called me on his "free" cell phone.  Although he has no shelter, no food, no money, he has a phone.   I had never heard of such a thing.   At the time of his call to me he lived in an abandoned house in a Detroit suburb in Michigan.  A few weeks later he called me from a bar (they let him use their phone) to inform me he was beaten and robbed of his only possession, his "free" cell phone.  So now you know who will really end up with these phones; the drug users, the thugs, the thieves, the criminals.  If ever a program was a waste of tax payers money it's this one.  Yes I feel bad for my bro, but it was his choice to live this way.

my wife and i have decided that we can make it on our own even though we would qualify for a multitude of gov't assistance programs.  We do not own cell phones, only basic TV (which we don't watch much) grow as much of our own food as we can, and live in a pretty strict budget.  The hardest part is explaining to our 12 year old why her friends get to go buy new clothes and have cell phones even when their parents don't have jobs, and she has to go without.  I know that I am teaching my kids to live within their means and that they can take care of themselves but to see the disappointment on their faces when the lazy, get something for nothing morons in this country get all the things for free that I work for makes me sick!   I pray for the day that a mans worth is measured by his ability to take care of his family

Its American tax bill? None. In fact, G.E. claimed a tax benefit of $3.2 billion.

I am sorry if I came back on the defensive.  I am as sick of all the bull**it as you are.  And I realize the passing out of cellphones is a diversionary tactic to get the haves and havenots fighting amongst each other as well within their own class.
