Told to commit suicide, survivors now face elimination from history
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/jul/06/japan.schoolsworldwide

New mood in Tokyo to sanitise one of war's darkest episodes

Choho Zukeran was a schoolboy, mobilised to dig beachfront trenches, when US soldiers landed on his native Okinawa, sparking one of the bloodiest battles of the second world war. Over the next few weeks, some 200,000 Japanese and Americans would die, including more than a quarter of Okinawa's civilian population. Most died in the invasion, others killed themselves - on the orders of the army that was supposed to be protecting them.

"The army had given us two grenades each. They told us to hurl the first one at the enemy and to use the second one to kill ourselves," Mr Zukeran told the Guardian from his home in Okinawa, a subtropical island 1,000 miles south-west of Tokyo. Whole families and communities committed suicide together.

Yet if the government in Tokyo gets its way, Japanese children may never learn how hundreds of Okinawa residents, under direct or indirect pressure from the military, took their own lives.

This year the education ministry ordered publishers of seven high-school textbooks to be introduced next April to remove references to the forced suicides. The ministry said "it was not clear there were military orders [to commit suicide]" and that "recent studies suggest there were no such orders".

The demand is part of a growing movement to sanitise - or simply ignore - the darkest episodes in modern Japanese history, which have gathered pace under one of the most conservative governments of recent decades, led by the hawkish prime minister, Shinzo Abe.

A long simmering row over the 1937 massacre of tens of thousands of Chinese civilians in Nanking by Japanese forces has been reignited by renewed efforts to play down the carnage. Last month about 130 Japanese MPs denounced the massacre as a Chinese fabrication and claimed the death toll was nearer 20,000. Several films marking the 70th anniversary are due for release this year, including one by the rightwing director Satoru Mizushima which describes the episode as a myth.

Other attempts by the Japanese right to rectify Japan's "masochistic" view of its own history have set it on a diplomatic collision course with its closest ally, the United States.

Last month a congressional committee passed a resolution calling on Japan to acknowledge and apologise for forcing an estimated 200,000 mainly Chinese and Korean women to work in frontline brothels - the so-called "comfort women". Mr Abe caused uproar when he denied the women had been coerced, and was forced to reiterate his support for an informal 1993 apology issued by the then parliament speaker.

Hiromichi Moteki, secretary-general of the rightwing Society for the Dissemination of Historical Fact, denies Japan's current obsession with reinterpreting the past is politically motivated. "We are now able to look again at our history now that the facts have come to light," he said. "We have been listening to the left's fabrications for years, but now we have the truth in front of us."

The drive extends to the rehabilitation of wartime politicians closely associated with militarism. Yuko Tojo, whose grandfather, Hideki, was prime minister during the war and was hanged as a war criminal in 1948, says clearing her grandfather's name is part of a mission to restore "pride and confidence".

"There is no need to apologise to anyone - our ancestors are not guilty of the crimes of which they have been accused," said Ms Tojo, 68, who is running as an independent in elections. "If my grandfather is to be blamed for anything, it is not that he started the war but that we lost it."

Japan's defeat probably saved Mr Zukeran's life. After a week in a beach cave in June 1945, hunger triumphed over fear and his family surrendered. "We soon realised we had been lied to. The Americans were not going to kill us.

"Lots of my school friends were told to commit suicide by Japanese soldiers. At school we had been brainwashed ... [that] to surrender to [US troops] would be to disgrace the emperor," said the 75-year-old retired teacher and local councillor.

The attempt to airbrush the suicides caused outrage in Okinawa and prompted half its towns and villages to demand the references stay.

"It is an undeniable fact that mass suicides could not have occurred without the involvement of the Japanese army," the Okinawa city assembly said.

More than six decades on, Mr Zukeran is appalled at what Japan's modern-day leaders are trying to do.

"Many of my friends died because they were told to. The army never once tried to protect us. They told people to die and stole food intended for women and children. That is how war robs people of their humanity."

In the weeks after the invasion, Mr Zukeran's family walked from village to village to escape the Americans who, they had been told, would rape and kill them amid a "typhoon of steel".

Eyewitnesses claim entire families committed suicide together on the orders of fanatical Japanese soldiers rather than allow them to surrender and betray sensitive information about troop movements. Some 700 committed mass suicide in the Kerama islets off Okinawa.

· This article was amended on Friday July 6 2007. When we said in the first paragraph that "some died in the invasion", we should have said "most". In the third paragraph we said, "Yet if the government in Tokyo gets its way, Japanese children may never learn how thousands of Okinawa residents ... took their own lives." This should have read "hundreds" not "thousands". The article has been corrected.

This article on the mass suicides in Okinawa shows the horrors that a very small force can commit. in fact, specific Okinawans were told to kill themselves for the greater good of the nation.

In the years to come, the value of Japanese life will once again be diminished to the point where the general masses will be asked to lessen their negative impact on earth, and end their lives early. The UN/NATO Japanese educational system is now preparing its people to accept this outcome and one again make the ultimate sacrifice for the common good.

An Atmosphere of Suspicion - European Right Under Pressure in Wake of Attacks

By Charles Hawley
Spiegel Online

Europe's right-wing populists are not used to being on the defensive. But the perpetrator of last Friday's horrific attacks in Norway was steeped in their anti-immigration, Muslim-skeptical ideology. They now find themselves in an uncomfortable position.

It was a somber gathering on the street out in front of the Norwegian Embassy in Berlin on Monday. Several people filed by throughout the morning to lay flowers in front of the embassy gates and Social Democrat leader Sigmar Gabriel also came to show his respect and sympathy in the wake of the Friday attacks which killed 76 people in Oslo and on the island of Utøya.

Just over a dozen of those standing in front of the embassy were holding signs: "The Capital of Fear? Not with Us!" they read, beneath the image of an ominous-looking figure wearing a black balaclava. The group belonged to the small right-wing populist group Pro-Deutschland. "Solidarity with Oslo!" the group chanted.

"When something so terrible happens in Europe, we felt that we needed to express our sympathy," Manfred Rouhs, the small party's lead candidate in upcoming Berlin city-state elections, told SPIEGEL ONLINE on Tuesday. "We also saw it as an opportunity to clearly distance ourselves from the terrible deed."

That, it would seem, has been tops on the priority list for right-wing populist groups around Europe so far this week. Muslim-skeptic, anti-immigration populist groups across Europe have rushed to condemn the attacks perpetrated by Anders Behring Breivik and to portray him as a disturbed loner. The English Defense League, for example, referred to him as a "murderous creature," the Freedom Party of Austria called it a "psychopathic crime."

I am a Norwegian and reading some of what is said here is a bit weird for me. It looks to me like a bunch of Americans here are trying to view Norwegian culture and traditions through US glasses. Even though we share many things, many other are very different here.

For example, it's of course a conspiracy that there were no armed guards at Utoya according to many here. After all, they argue, there had been ministers there and more were planned to come. Besides, they continue, this was a youth camp for the elite! This is utterly ridiculous if you know anything about Norway. They were not the kids of the elite or ministers, but kids interested in politics coming from all around the country. And for security. I live in a tiny village of 300 up north and the Justice Minister have been here on vacation because he's married into a family here. Never with armed guards or anything like that. It's not how things work here and I pray it will continue to be so even after 22|7.

Yes, the Royal family is of course related to the English Royal family, no secret there. But what's this talk of a Norwegian Nobility? There's no nobility here, just the Royal family. Everybody knows the royals have been intermarrying for decades, but might I remind you what the Crown Prince of Norway did? He married a "normal" girl, Mette Marit and their kids will continue the Royal function in the future if the people still approve of them, like they do now.

PS! This is not to say I don't find this terrorist attack suspicious, I do. And I do believe he was not acting alone. But unlike a guy like Alex Jones, I lack the deep powers of allknowingness to within 2 hours of the breaking news of this, knowing this is an inside job done by THEM.

- The death toll was way too high for it just being one guy.

- Breivik had no motivation to slaughter all those people.

Off course it's a conspiracy.

Excerpt:
The latest is the attack on Norway, whose leader foresaw with warnings. The same group from the Fascist Axis has set their sights on the $1.5 trillion sovereign wealth fund accumulated by Norway with their vast North Sea oil operations. The syndicate wants the funds to join in supporting a financial system in the US & UK that is fast imploding. The Libyan funds helped, but with the USTreasury Bond black hole accelerating in its momentum and force, the needs have become almost unlimited.

Norway Withdraws F-16s from Libya Ops

By GERARD O'DWYER
Published: 11 Aug 2011 21:00

HELSINKI - Norway has withdrawn its F-16 fighter squadron from NATO's Operation Unified Protector (OUP). The return of the F-16s ends Norway's direct involvement in the operation and the enforcement of NATO's no-fly zone over Libya.

The Norwegian Air Force's squadron, comprising six F-16s, flew 596 missions, almost 10 percent of the total by NATO-aligned aircraft, since March. The aircraft dropped 542 bombs and logged about 2,000 hours of flight time over the four-month period, according to Norwegian Ministry of Defense figures.

The number of missions flown by the aircraft declined in June when two F-16s were recalled to Norway from Souda Airbase in Crete. Britain compensated for the partial withdrawal, sending an extra four Panavia Tornado GR.4 ground-attack jets to replace the F-16s...

Norway massacre: Breivik declared insane

Psychiatrists assessing self-confessed Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik have concluded that he is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

They believe he was in a psychotic state during the twin attacks on 22 July that led to the deaths of 77 people and injured 151.

He was also insane during the 13 interviews the two psychiatrists held with them, a news conference heard.

Breivik admits carrying out the attacks but has pleaded not guilty to charges.

He has previously said the attacks were atrocious but "necessary".

The two psychiatrists, in their report, concluded that he lived in his "own delusional universe where all his thoughts and acts are guided by his delusions".

Of course he's not sane, he's a MK ULTRA mind-controlled freemason who committed a sacrificial killing for the elite to further their agendas.

Norway mass killer deemed sane in new finding

Norwegian Anders Behring Breivik was sane when he killed 77 people last summer in attacks he saw as punishing "traitors" who favored immigration, a psychiatric team said on Tuesday, in a report contradicting an earlier one that found him psychotic.

Breivik himself has insisted he is mentally stable and demanded that the attacks - the most violent in Norway since World War Two - be judged as a political act rather than the work of a deranged mind.

"The mental health experts' main conclusion is that defendant Anders Behring Breivik is considered not to have been psychotic at the time of the actions on July 22, 2011," Oslo District Court said in a statement.

A report completed in November found Breivik to be a psychotic who also suffered from paranoid schizophrenia during and after the July 22 attacks.

A final ruling on Breivik's mental condition will be made by a five-judge panel near the end of his trial. The latest report could give the judges grounds to sentence Breivik to prison if found guilty.

His trial on terror and murder charges is due to start next week and is expected to last 10 weeks.

Breivik, 33, has admitted detonating a bomb that killed eight people at government headquarters in Oslo, then massacring 69 people with gunfire at a Labor Party summer camp. Most of the summer camp victims were teenagers.

In a preliminary court hearing Breivik denied criminal guilt and suggested his actions were part of a war to save European culture.

If Breivik is found guilty and the judges side with the latest psychiatric report, he could face 21 years in prison with the potential for indefinite extensions to prevent him from repeating his crimes.

If he is eventually ruled psychotic, Breivik would likely face an indefinite period of psychiatric care in a locked facility.

Breivik's defense team has said its primary goal at the trial would be to prove their client sane.

Norway Killer Is Ruled Sane and Given 21 Years in Prison
By MARK LEWIS and ALAN COWELL
Published: August 24, 2012

OSLO — A court on Friday sentenced Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian extremist who admitted killing 77 people, to at least 21 years in prison after ruling that he was sane when he carried out his country’s worst peacetime atrocity. The sentence was the most severe permitted under Norwegian law, but it can be extended at a later date if he is still deemed to be a danger to society

Mr. Breivik, 33, who had insisted that he was sane when he carried out the attacks last year as part of what he called a campaign against multiculturalism in Norway, smiled when the verdict was announced. As he arrived in court on Friday, wearing a dark suit and tie, he raised his right arm in a right-wing salute, his fist clenched.

His 10-week trial ended in June. Defense lawyers had sought a prison sentence, arguing that Mr. Breivik was sane when he bombed buildings in downtown Oslo, killing eight people, and then headed to Utoya Island, where he shot 69 people to death at a summer youth camp run by the Labour Party. Prosecutors said that he was mentally ill, that he was not criminally responsible and that he should be hospitalized instead. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors planned an appeal.

Experts said they were not aware of any previous case in Norwegian legal history in which prosecutors had called for an insanity verdict and defense lawyers had advocated conviction.
