North Port, Florida - Sixteen-year-old Wesley McKinley's suicide, on April 8th, is raising questions about what happened one day after his Principal, Dr. George Kenney, hypnotized him.  "They're blaming him for his death," says Bianca Cannon a senior at North Port High School.  "He was doing it for good, not telling Wesley to harm himself," explains student Danielle Leopold. Students say Kenney, a certified hypnotist and author, helps a a lot.   "It's no big deal. He does it for kids that need help with exams and the stress of school. A lot of seniors do it, it helps them with finals," says Bianca.  "The students love him, the parents love him, and the staff loves him. He's a great guy. He's always been a good example and done wonderful things for the school," says Gary Leatherman, Communications director for the Sarasota School District. Sarasota school district officials say the North Port High School principal is on paid administrative leave while it investigates. Leatherman says, "There's no presumption Dr. Kenney has done anything wrong. He's not being disciplined, he's not being suspended." In a written statement, Sarasota School superintendent Lori White says Kenney's techniques "are outside the scope of normally accepted student counseling practices and is cause for serious concern."  Some students say Principal Kenney has been hypnotizing students for a couple of years, either in a classroom group setting or individually one-on-one. But school district officials say, while they were aware of Kenney's technique, his permission had limited use." "He was authorized to demonstrate in psychology class with parent permission," says Leatherman. Kenney reportedly had permission from Wesley's parents to use hypnosis on their son. "It's ridiculous to hold him responsible, to say because that child was hypnotized he killed himself that's just wrong," says parent Vincent Giacinto. A group of students held a protest Wednesday morning showing support for Kenney and asking he return to work. They want Kenney to attend their graduation on June 4th. The school district has not decided who will do the investigation if it will be handled by someone inside or outside the district offices. Ten News tried getting a hold of Principal Kenney and Wesley McKinley's parents but our calls have not been returned.

Three Florida high school students are dead after being hypnotized by their school principal in Sarasota County, one in a car accident and two by suicide. Principal George Kenney is believed to have hypnotized up to 75 people, including students, members of the school staff and their children. Sarasota County School District officials repeatedly warned Kenney to stop the practice, which the principal insists was only done in the interest of helping students to be motivated and focused on school work and sports.

About 100 parents gathered inside the auditorium at North Port High School to listen and learn from mental health experts. Those experts discussed suicide, grief and depression and how parents can tell if their child is hurting inside.

After two students from the school took their own lives this year, principal George Kenney, felt an event like this was necessary. “We are just trying to let people know of options that are available, because sometime whet they feel things are hopeless, that's an option they might look at. We are concerned about that.”

Virginia Miller, whose 17-year-old daughter is a student at North Port, felt the discussion was vital. “I think it's beneficial. I'm glad to see there were some parents there. I'm sorry there were not more. If you can see this in some other child, it was worth a couple of hours sitting here.”

According to Harvey Dorey, a psychologist for Sarasota County Schools, the average number of suicides among high schoolers in Sarasota County is higher than the national average and Florida's state average. As to why that is, he told the crowd, he simply does not know.

A lot of schools teach 'death education'-type classes, where they glorify death and dying.  There are hidden inside courses with names like 'American Literature,' Sociology, or Psychology, etc.  Suicides always skyrocket when they start teaching this crap.  Just like anti-drug education causes more drug use.

   I beleive suggestions and manipulations can be performed that can controll. I witnessed a display in Argentina, an expert in the art gaining complete controll over the subjects. I've seen hypnotism shows, like magicians do for children's groups at the county fair etc. I can't imagine being hypnotized myself, even though you can apparently see it happening ot most people invited on the stage. I guess I haven't researched how it works.

Some of you have seen this Derren Brown video of a man in bar playing a video game about shooting zombies.He is hypnotized into believing he is part of the game.I think it is a good example how someone could be mind tricked into picking up a gun and shooting it.If this guy did this in a mall very few would realize what was behind it.It would only be said he was crazed killer.

NORTH PORT, Fla. (AP) — High school principal George Kenney acknowledged using hypnosis to help people: students who needed to relax before tests, a basketball player having trouble making free throws and even school secretaries who wanted to quit smoking.

But now the popular 51-year-old principal's future at North Port High School is in question since it came to light that he had hypnotized two students before their separate suicides this spring. There is no indication their deaths were any more than a tragic coincidence. However, Kenney acknowledged conducting the sessions after being warned by his boss to stop such one-on-one hypnosis with students at school.

Most students, teachers and fellow administrators at the southwest Florida school were aware that Kenney was a trained hypnotist who would eagerly help those who sought him out for sessions, according to a school district report. Students looked forward to his demonstrations in a psychology class and at other school events.

In April, according to the Sarasota County School District report, he hypnotized a 16-year-old student to help him better focus on a test. The next day, the boy committed suicide. Kenney was put on leave in May when the boy's parents, who had given their permission for the sessions, raised concerns after his death.

The administrator's situation then got stickier when an investigation showed that he had also hypnotized another student five months before her May 4 suicide, initially lied about it and had defied three separate verbal warnings to stop the sessions with students.

A 134-page independent investigative report released by the district last week includes an interview with Kenney, who acknowledged defying the orders and then lying.

"I'm not saying I used great judgment all the time here," he told an investigator. "I think I used poor judgment several times."

But the report also reflects the support and affection Kenney enjoys at the 2,300-student high school, about 90 miles south of Tampa. Two Facebook pages, one with more than 1,600 fans, have been created to support Kenney, principal of North Port High since its opening in 2001. Some students who were hypnotized say it helped them with sports and academics.

A Florida high school principal lied about having hypnotized a student who committed suicide and another who died in a car crash, a school district investigation has revealed.

George Kenney, 51, former principal of North Port High School in Sarasota, admitted to hypnotizing as many as 75 people -- students, parents and staff -- at the school and to defying orders to only use hypnosis in psychology class and with parental permission.

His use of the practice, widely known at the school, came under scrutiny after Kenney acknowledged he had hypnotized Wesley McKinley , 16, the day before the teenager killed himself in April.

But he had denied using the technique on Brittany Palumbo, 16, who killed herself May 4, or Marcus Freeman, 16, a star quarterback on the high school team, who died in a car crash March 15.

"Dr. Kenney admitted that he lied … and he admitted that he did have sessions with both of the other deceased students," according to the report by Steele Investigations Agency, released this week.

also this story reminds me of a man who worked at my elementary school as a "counselor". he would do similar things, although im almost positive he didn't use hypnosis (it seemed close to it though) but he would do this with various students all the time and i would always think why are they letting him do this ? don't they realize they are labile ? i never wanted to see him. i hated that elementary school so much.

Principal Charged After Hypnotizing Students Who Committed Suicide

NORTH PORT, Fla. (CBS TAMPA) – North Port police have charged the town’s high school principal with two counts of second-degree criminal misdemeanors after students he hypnotized ended up committing suicide.

Over six months, the North Port Police Department conducted around 70 interviews with students claiming to have been hypnotized by Dr. George Kenney and 100 adults either from among the school’s staff or parent community after receiving a complaint from the Florida Department of Health Services.

In documents provided to CBS Tampa detailing the Sarasota School Department’s internal investigation, Kenney routinely hypnotized students in one-on-one sessions and in group settings. They often involved the school athletics teams or ROTC programs.

Kenney told investigators it allowed students to relax, improved their performance in tests and helped some with anger issues.

Documents show, however, that Kenney occasionally raised tempers and eyebrows within the school’s community.
