Yeah I thought the same when I watched it. I have seen it before I think. Its the perfect living place for the future slave. Remember the apartments in the 5th Element? Of course people who wanna live like that should be able to. Also it would make a nice guest house. Was there a bed for 2 people? Cant have a family in there... but there is no need since they get handed over to the state after they are born. No worries raising them, you have too much work to do anyways manufacteuring boots for our glorious soldiers at the front fighting eastasia... or was it oceania?

One thing that struck me about the cube house was the prominence of the flat screen tv. There is literally only room to eat, sh** and watch TV.

How do you like the stairs that are kind of messed up? If you have stiff joints from having no room to move around they can be disabling.

Dont worry... if you are too old or broken you just move into the next new boxed living space 6 ft under.

yeah that struck me too, seems they went all out for lounging and tv watching, but cut corners on stairs, literally. and notice how the guy doesn't even attempt to lay down in that bed. what did he say it's 4' long ?? how are you supposed to sleep in a four foot long bed if you're not a dwarf ?

Osaka's capsule hotels

It is one thing building it; it is another asking if it will flourish.

This is about the Japanese version capsule hotel that China is starting to build in the city of Shanghai. They are calling it microhotels.

If the coffin-sized, single accommodation room has found success in Japan since its inception in 1979 in the city of Osaka, then it could very well find the same favorable outcome in a country replacing Japan as the world’s second economic giant, where board and lodging are getting expensive in their metropolitan cities.

With tourism exploding in China and with their own people going around either sight-seeing, looking for jobs or for business purposes, there couldn’t be a better and cheaper place to stay in than this low-budget accommodation.

This could be popular to those traveling light and may just be passing through and need to rest. For privacy, there is only a little screen that is pulled down.

Surely, it would only be catering to those built lightly in size, which is typical of a Japanese, Chinese or any Asian individual and most importantly to those not suffering from claustrophobia.

Because I am claustrophobic, writing about this and imagining its “room” size make me gasp for breath.

It is said that in Japan nightly rates could cost about $50. Except perhaps for a TV set in some capsules, there isn’t much amenity to consider. The alternative is to stay at a “love hotel,” which costs about $100 and rents by the hour, or a proper budget hotel, which runs at least twice as much.

Well, its not so much lack of space as property speculation combined with irrational acceptance of the status quo. Plus the people that make a lot of money from said property speculation.

When a small plot costs tens of thousands alone, you're more likely to restrict the size of habitable properties.

The capsule hotel too seems straight out of The 5th Element. Well there it was a "room" on a space transit flight and you were literally put to sleep. Remember in the movie they said "green" to indicate that something is good or awesome? If this eco hype goes on that might happen in the future.

HONG KONG - Soaring property prices in Beijing and other Chinese cities are giving rise to a new line of accommodation - "apartments" little wider than a narrow bed and hardly a meter longer, earning landlords ready cash at little cost and snapped up by young workers on low pay, often with families to support back home.



Each small apartment, at 2.4 meters long, 0.90 meters wide and 2 meters high, has space only for a single bed and a dressing table, with TV set and Internet connections.

"The rented places are just like individual toilet cubicles put in a room. How can people live there?" was the broad response from the general public who saw a picture posted by Internet blogger Zhang Qi of her living space in Beijing.

Zhang, apparently the first tenant of such a compartment in Beijing, disagrees, appreciating the privacy that comes with three walls and a front door and at a price she can afford. The Shanxi native, who earns about 4,000 yuan (US$586) a month at an advertisement company in Beijing, pays 250 yuan rent monthly for the compartment in the capital city, the first of its kind in China. Before moving, she shared a flat with a roommate at 800 yuan per month.

"Now I can save more money for my mom and siblings who live in my home town," Zhang said.

On 4000 yuan/month income and rent of 250 yaun/month, that's really low rent when considering that at least in the US, the general guideline for a mortgage/rent is based on no more than about 25-30% of your gross pay. Their rent isn't even 10% of gross. But, just because it's cheap, doesn't mean it's worth it.

Not if the government collects your sewage, charges you for it and makes a profit when it sells you the ecoli tainted produce it grew with your own waste.

How is this hovel “ecological”?  To minimize pumping / shipping, urine & humanure should essentially be used on-site to fertilize crops.  In an all-year growing environment, minimum solar exposure per person is 1,000 to 1,600 sq. ft. per person.  Put such a garden on the roof, and the home sq. ft. PER PERSON shows this concept to be a joke.
