Obama declares FATWAH on Pentagon lunch guest, al-Awlaki

The U.S. launched a drone strike in Yemen on Thursday aimed at killing Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born radical cleric suspected of orchestrating terrorist attacks in the U.S, but he evaded the missile, Yemeni and U.S. officials said.

The attack came days after a U.S. Navy SEALs team killed Osama bin Laden at a compound in Pakistan. Had Thursday's strike succeeded, the U.S. would have killed two of the most-wanted terrorists in a week.

Mr. Awlaki has emerged as a leading charismatic front-man of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a group the U.S. considers the world's most active terror organization. With bin Laden's death, some officials believe Mr. Awlaki and the Yemen-based group now represent the gravest threat to the U.S.

He has been linked to at least three major incidents: the Ft. Hood shootings, the Christmas 2009 plot to blow up a U.S.-bound passenger plane and a plan to blow up cargo planes.

The attack appears to be unrelated to intelligence information taken in the raid that killed bin Laden, whose death was confirmed by al Qaeda Friday in a statement that vowed to continue attacks on Americans.

The Central Intelligence Agency has been ramping up its intelligence collection in Yemen in recent months and works closely with Saudi intelligence.

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been more forthcoming with information on Mr. Awlaki since the president has faced major protests in his country, a U.S. official said. Mr. Saleh has sought to use that information in an effort to gain more U.S. support, the official added.

Pentagon Dinner Guest al-Awlaki Slated to Replace Osama

Yemen-based Anwar al-Awlaki is scheduled to replace the late Osama bin Laden, according to news reports.

As Tea Party darling Michele Bachmann notes above, al-Awlaki is the new face of terror in a war designed to last forever.

“Anwar al-Awlaki, affiliated with a Yemen-based faction of al-Qaida, is being mentioned in national media reports as a potential successor to Osama bin Laden, who was killed last week in Pakistan,” reports a Carlsbad, New Mexico newspaper. The Muslim cleric was born in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Following the unverified murder of Osama bin Laden, the corporate media has buzzed with speculation on who will replace the Saudi. Ayman al-Zawahiri is not charismatic enough for American audiences, NBC News notes. “We could see Anwar al-Awlaki move in, or Ilyas Kashmiri, a Pakistani militant,” a nameless senior government official told the news organization.

Ilyas Kashmiri, said to be the leader of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, is in the running because his group is based in Pakistan. As the Osama death story developed, Pakistan was blamed for sheltering the terrorist. Murmurings of war against the Muslim nation are all the rage in Washington and the corporate media.

In Britain, the media has christen al-Awlaki the “new Osama” and claims he is plotting a Mumbai-style massacre in the country. “The options that you have for operations could be pipe bombs, assassinations or using a firearm at a location crowded with enemies,” al-Awlaki supposedly instructed in an email sent to The Sun.

Anwar is said to be behind the the aborted Christmas Day bombing, the Fort Hood shooting, the Times Square bombing attempt. He preached to the alleged September 11 hijackers. He is said to be internet savvy, unlike his predecessor, making him the perfect villain for the 21st century.

He also dined at the Pentagon, according to documents obtained by Fox News. “The Pentagon has offered no explanation of how a man, now on the CIA kills or capture list, ended up at a special lunch for Muslim outreach,” a flummoxed Fox News reported.

“Awlaki was vetted before he was invited to attend a luncheon at the Pentagon in the secretary of the Army’s Office of Government Counsel. His appearance at the meeting was deliberately engineered despite Awlaki’s ties to three of the alleged 9/11 hijackers – Nawaf al-Hazmi, Khalid al-Mihdhar and Hani Hanjour – who were identified as the suicide pilots that slammed Flight 77 into the Pentagon,” Paul Joseph Watson wrote on October 21, 2010.

“Given the fact that Awlaki is a double operative, claiming to be an Al-Qaeda leader yet in fact working for U.S. intelligence, it’s hardly surprising that he made an appearance at the Pentagon.”

It is also hardly surprising that he was selected to replace Osama bin Laden, who died nearly a decade ago. The promotion of Anwar al-Awlaki to master terrorist signals a new chapter in the never-ending war against manufactured enemies of the state. It is no mistake an American born and breed Muslim was selected to replace Osama.

Qaeda-Linked Imam Dined at Pentagon after 9/11
Anwar al-Awlaki, Linked to 9/11, Ft. Hood Shooting, and Times Square Bomb Attempt was good friend of CSIS officers
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/10/21/national/main6978200.shtml
NEW YORK, Oct. 21, 2010

(CBS)  This story was written by CBS News Justice and Homeland Security correspondent Bob Orr
Anwar al-Awlaki - the radical spiritual leader linked to several 9/11 attackers, the Fort Hood shooting, and the attempted Christmas Day bombing of an airliner - was a guest at the Pentagon in the months after 9/11, a Pentagon official confirmed to CBS News.

Awlaki was invited as "...part of an informal outreach program" in which officials sought contact "...with leading members of the Muslim community," the official said. At that time, Awlaki was widely viewed as a "moderate" imam at a mosque in Northern Virginia.

At the same time, the FBI was also interviewing Awlaki about his contacts with three of the 9/11 attackers - Nawaf al-Hazmi, Khalid al Midhar and Hani Hanjour - who were all part of the crew of five that hijacked the American Airlines jet that hit the Pentagon.

In the days after 9/11, Awlaki told FBI officials he remembered meeting al Hazmi but recalled little else about him. It is believed Awlaki met both al Hazmi and al Midhar in 2000 when Awlaki was the imam at a mosque in San Diego. Awlaki later moved to Northern Virginia and al Hazmi was seen at the Virginia mosque as well. However, there are scant details about Awlaki’s actual contacts with al Midhar and Hani Hanjour.

In 2001, the FBI did not share this investigative information with the Pentagon, but officials say there was no reason to - Awlaki was not a suspect and was not believed to be connected to the 9/11 attacks. Instead he was viewed as a valuable liaison to the Muslim community and a potential investigative source. As one official put it, "he was a much different guy back then."

Still, it's not clear what kind of vetting or background check was done by the Defense Department before Awlaki was allowed into the building.

In the nine years since the meeting, Awlaki has become increasingly radicalized and is part of the core leadership of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. His radical preachings helped to inspire alleged Fort Hood gunman Major Nidal Hasan and officials say Awlaki took a direct operational role in the failed Christmas Day attack on Northwest Airlines flight 253. Awlak, who was born in the United States, has now been targeted by the government - he’s currently on the CIA’s list of terrorists to be killed or captured.

The FBI only learned of Awlaki’s Pentagon luncheon during the investigation into the November 2009 Fort Hood shootings. A Defense Department employee recognized the cleric's picture and reported the 2001 meeting to the FBI.

News of al-Awlaki's presence at the Pentagon event was first reported by Fox News.

EXCLUSIVE:
Al Qaeda Leader and CIA Agent, al-Awalki, Dined at the Pentagon Just Months After 9/11

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/10/20/al-qaeda-terror-leader-dined-pentagon-months/
By Catherine Herridge Published October 20, 2010 | FoxNews.com

Anwar Al-Awlaki may be the first American on the CIA's kill or capture list, but he was also a lunch guest of military brass at the Pentagon within months of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, Fox News has learned.  Documents exclusively obtained by Fox News, including an FBI interview conducted after the Fort Hood shooting in November 2009, state that Awlaki was taken to the Pentagon as part of the military’s outreach to the Muslim community in the immediate aftermath of the attacks.  The incident was flagged by a current Defense Department employee who came forward and told investigators she helped arrange the meeting after she saw Awlaki speak in Alexandria, Va.  The employee "attended this talk and while she arrived late she recalls being impressed by this imam. He condemned Al Qaeda and the terrorist attacks. During his talk he was 'harassed' by members of the audience and suffered it well," reads one document.  According to the documents, obtained as part of an ongoing investigation by the specials unit "Fox News Reporting," there was a push within the Defense Department to reach out to the Muslim community. "At that period in time, the secretary of the Army (redacted) was eager to have a presentation from a moderate Muslim."

In addition, Awlaki "was considered to be an 'up and coming' member of the Islamic community. After her vetting, Aulaqi (Awlaki) was invited to and attended a luncheon at the Pentagon in the secretary of the Army's Office of Government Counsel."  Awlaki, a Yemeni-American who was born in Las Cruces, N.M., was interviewed at least four times by the FBI in the first week after the attacks because of his ties to the three hijackers Nawaf al-Hazmi, Khalid al-Mihdhar and Hani Hanjour. The three hijackers were all onboard Flight 77 that slammed into the Pentagon.  Awlaki is now believed to be hiding in Yemen after he was linked to the alleged Ft. Hood shooter Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who e-mailed Awlaki prior to the attack.  Sources told Fox News that Awlaki, who is a former Muslim chaplain at George Washington University, met with the Christmas Day bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab in Yemen and was the middle-man between the young Nigerian and the bombmaker. Awlaki was also said to inspire would-be Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad.  Apparently, none of the FBI's information about Awlaki was shared with the Pentagon. Former Army Secretary Tommy White, who led the Army in 2001, said he doesn't have any recollection of the luncheon or any contact with Awlaki.  "If this was a luncheon at the Office of Government Counsel, I would not necessarily be there," he said.  The Pentagon has offered no explanation of how a man, now on the CIA kills or capture list, ended up at a special lunch for Muslim outreach. After repeated requests for comment on the vetting process beginning on October 13th, an Army spokesman insisted Wednesday that the lunch was not an Army event. "The Army has found no evidence that the Army either sponsored or participated in the event described in this report," spokesman Thomas Collins said. Collins also noted that the FBI document referred to the “Office of Government Counsel” but should read “Office of General Counsel.” Collins said he believed the event was sponsored by the office of the Secretary of Defense. A spokeswoman there said she would look into it and get back to Fox News.A former high-ranking FBI agent told Fox News that at the time Awlaki went to lunch at the Pentagon, there was tremendous "arrogance" about the vetting process at the Pentagon.  "They vetted people politically and showed indifference toward security and intelligence advice of others," the former agent said.

Dining with the enemy:
Al Qaeda leader linked to 9/11 hijackers 'was invited to the Pentagon for lunch after attacks'

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1322397/Al-Qaedas-Anwar-Al-Awlaki-invited-Pentagon-lunch-9-11-attacks.html
By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 2:03 AM on 22nd October 2010

An Al Qaeda leader who is one of the most wanted men in the world was invited for lunch at the Pentagon in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks, a new report has claimed. New documents have been obtained which apparently detail how  Anwar Al-Awlaki, the first American on the CIA's kill or capture list, rubbed shoulders with high-ranking military personnel just months after the atrocities. Fox News claim to have acquired documents that state that  Awlaki was taken to the U.S. Department of Defense's headquarters as part of the military's outreach program to the Muslim community in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks. In an FBI interview conducted after the Fort Hood shooting in November last year, a Defense Department employee told investigators that she helped to arrange the meeting with Awlaki after seeing him speak in Alexandria, Virgina.

One of the documents read that the employee had 'attended this talk and while she arrived late she recalls being impressed by this imam. He condemned Al Qaeda and the terrorists attacks'. 'After her vetting, Aulaqi (Awlaki) was invited to and attended a luncheon at the Pentagon in the secretary of the Army's Office of Government Counsel'. Awlaki was apparently interviewed at least four times by the FBI in the week after the September 11 attacks because of his links to the three hijackers. Nawaf al-Hazmi,Khalid al-Mihdhar and Hani Hanjour were all aboard Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon. He was also linked to the alleged Fort Hood shooter Major Nidal Malik Hasan who had emailed Awlaki before the attack.

Awlaki, a former Muslim chaplain at George Washington University, is now believed to be hiding in Yemen. That is where he is said to have met with the Christmas Day bomber Farouk Abdulmutallab and became the go between the young Nigerian and the maker of the bombs that Abdulmutallab had planned to use. There appeared to have been a break in communication between the FBI and the Pentagon as it emerges that none of the Bureau's information abotu Awlaki was shared with the Department of Defense.

Former Army Secretary Tommy White who led the troops in 2001 has said he doesn't recall having lunch or any contact with Awlaki. White said: 'If this was a luncheon at the Office of Government Counsel, I would not necessarily be there'. The Pentagon has yet to offer an explanation as to how one of the world's most wanted men with clear connections to other terrorists could have ended up at a lunch for Muslim reconciliation soon after the attacks. Army spokesman Thomas Collins said: 'The Army has found no evidence that the Army either sponsored or participated in the event described in this report'. A former high-ranking FBI agent told Fox News that nine years ago when Alwaki went to the Pentagon lunch, there was tremendous 'arrogance' about the screening process and who they allowed in the building. 'They vetted people politically and showed indifference toward security and intelligence advice of other', the former agent claimed.

According to the officials, al-Awlaki was invited as part of a Pentagon outreach program to convince influential Muslims that the war in Afghanistan was aimed at al-Qaida, not Muslims.

The FBI obtained the information during its investigation into the Fort Hood shooting rampage last November and alleged gunman Nidal Hasan's contact with Awlaki.

i can just imagine at cia HQ, "ok guys, we need to get al-Awlaki".
After months of searching, "boss, i found him, hes over in the pentagon"
"...i think its time you and me had a little chat"

And the budding young cia lad, has a choice, be patched, or be promoted for his ability.
maybe both.

Thanks for that link. The only reference I had to that was the Fox article; which doesn't convince my 'progressive liberal' friends, who discount anything that has "Fox" associations. (Left/right paradigm doing its job).
But that link is from MSNBC. Egads - it's the LEFT!!
Read it and weep.

I can't wait to see how this is going to be spun in the MSM. Will they even bring up that he was at the Pentagon or will it be mostly swept under the rug?
