Scenes from the Libyan War: Gaddafi wins battle of Brega

Libyan rebels were forced to retreat after failing to retake the oil town of Brega yesterday, as Muammar Gaddafi’s military beat back what appears to be a disorganized and rag-tag opposition movement, as evidenced in the video and photos on the left, which shows footage of rebels firing missiles and the Libyan army volleying with heavy firepower.

The revolutionaries were pummeled for the third day in a row, as snapshots illustrate rebels hopping in Toyota pickup trucks to flee a barrage of rockets from Gaddafi forces. The Libyan army was able to withstand an onslaught of airstrikes from the Western coalition and impressively regain territory it had lost in recent weeks.

Panic and chaos seem to engulf the opposition. The footage clearly reveals a rebel movement that is highly undisciplined, rife with infighting – as they fire at one another in apparent disagreement over why the Brega assault failed,
