QUOTE:   “I know the warning is for babies, but I have read that radioactive contamination builds up in your body – so while it might be okay right now to drink contaminated tap water, I don’t want to risk it,” said one middle-aged Japanese housewife who queued unsuccessfully for bottled water in a supermarket in Azabu.

Japan radiation scare spreads to Tokyo water

Fears over the impact of radiation poisoning on Japanese food supplies spread to Tokyo’s tap water on Wednesday after the US banned milk products, fruit and vegetables from areas near the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant. Japanese authorities said the level of radioactive iodine found in Tokyo’s tap water was double the recommended limit for infants and advised against using the water for mixing milk formula. Shintaro Ishihara, the governor of Tokyo, warned that the radiation levels might be harmful to babies, sparking a run on bottled water supplies in some of the city’s supermarkets. However, Yukio Edano, chief cabinet secretary, said the water was safe for consumption by children and adults and would pose a health threat only if consumed over a long period. Mr Edano emphasised that “even if consumed several times, it would have no harmful effects on human health even in the future”.
