Seawater radiation shoots far past limit
Experts fear pollution may affect seafood abroad

http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/nn20110406a1.html

By KANAKO TAKAHARA
Staff writer

...

"By the time radioactive iodine is taken in by plankton, which is eaten by smaller fish and then by bigger fish, it will be diluted by the sea and the amount will decrease because of its eight-day half-life," Yamamoto said. "But cesium is a bigger problem."

The half-life of cesium-137 is 30 years, while that for cesium-134 is two years. The longer half-life means it will probably concentrate in the upper food chain.

Yamamoto said such radioactive materials are likely to be detected in fish and other marine products in Japan and other nations in the short and long run, posing a serious threat to the seafood industry in other nations as well.

"All of Japan's sea products will probably be labeled unsafe and other nations will blame Japan if radiation is detected in their marine products," Yamamoto said.

UPDATE: Workers Use 'Liquid Glass' In Bid To Stop Toxic Leak At Japanese Plant
5 April 2011
, by Mitsuru Obe TOKYO (Dow Jones Newswires - The Wall Street Journal)
http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20110405-705323.html

Excerpt:

(Updates with progress made in slowing flow of highly toxic water, concerns about pouring of less-toxic water into ocean.)

Efforts to end the release of highly radioactive water into the ocean at Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant finally met with some success Tuesday with the injection of "liquid glass" gel around a damaged pipe managing to reduce the toxic flow in half, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.

Workers have tried a variety of methods to reduce the flow, put at several tons of water an hour, since it was discovered coming from a crack in a concrete container near the shoreline Saturday. The water is thought to be from the highly damaged No. 2 reactor.

The steady flow from the crack is being blamed for a surge in the level of contamination in seawater near the complex. A water sample taken just outside the water intake for the No. 2 unit showed the level of radioactive iodine-131 at 7.5 million times the allowable limit, the most dangerous level of radiation so far detected.

In the latest step 3,000 liters of the gel-like sodium silicate, which acts as an adhesive, were poured into rocks supporting the pipes running to the ocean. Authorities said the substance would continue to harden over time and could continue to slow the flow of water.

The small progress came as the government defended its decision Monday to dump 11,500 tons of low-level radioactive water into the ocean. The water is being discharged to free up storage space for the much more toxic water that is blocking access to machinery vital to the repair work at the quake-hit complex.

The discharge started Monday evening with 10 pumps expelling 4,800 tons of water a day into the ocean. It hopes to complete the process by Friday.

But the release has created concerns that prompted South Korea to seek more information from the Japanese Foreign Ministry. It was "natural" for South Koreans to be concerned about the water discharge, despite the location of the troubled nuclear facility on the side of Japan away from the Korean peninsula, said a spokesman of the South Korean foreign ministry in Seoul.

Japanese government officials Tuesday tried to calm concerns of the neighboring countries.

----

Authorities said about 20,000 tons of seawater still remain in the turbine building and the cable trench of each of Reactors Nos. 1-3, for a total of 60,000 tons.

The government is also planning to obtain several large storage tanks, although the delivery is expected to take several weeks

Engineers had been desperately struggling to plug the leak and had tried using sawdust, newspapers and concrete to stem the flow of the highly-contaminated water.

The liquid glass was injected into the ground beneath the leaking storage pit yesterday and stopped the escape after solidifying the earth.

Once again the "INJECTING" LIES!!

Inject means to add inside - this is not what they are doing!

Quote
Injecting nitrogen can reduce the amount of hydrogen present.

A complete lie! Injecting nitrogen into the stew of gases forming inside the secondary containment boiler vessels does not reduce anything else in them, if that explosive hydrogen and oxygen (plus xenon, iodine thorium and a host of other fission byproduct gases and vapors including some new ones from raw salt water). At most it would merely change the explosive mixture. What they would be doing is venting radioactive steam and explosive gases and replacing them with nitrogen which reduces the risk of ignition or explosion from the overheated exposed fuel pellets of the zirconium alloy containment rods that melted and dropped/expelled their pellets all over the place that are likely still not covered with water moderator that would enable or cause criticalities among them.

Quote
Introducing nitrogen is one of the steps recommended by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission. In a confidential assessment dated March 26, the commission said injecting nitrogen, an inert gas, into the containment structures of the plant’s reactors was suggested to purge the units hydrogen and oxygen, which could combine to produce explosions. The document also recommended that engineers continue adding boron to cooling water to help prevent the cores from restarting the nuclear reaction, a process known as criticality.

The borated neutron poisoning SCRAM water is something they should have had plenty of on hand and ready to flush with to refill all the reactors with the moment they encountered cooling problems, had these reactors ever been safe.

And, of course, us not being gullible schoolchildren and understanding this halon type of oxygen and hydrogen displacing fire drill idea, begs the question "where will all the high pressure explosive radioactive gases and vapors already in there be going?", for you, so you can be replacing them with nitrogen. (much like the "injecting" water lie before it)

This New York Lies (times) article also holds some other big nose stretchers and/or new revelations:

Quote
This would be the first time nitrogen is being injected into any of the reactors, Ken Morita, a spokesman for the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said in an interview. The same approach might later be tried for the No. 2 and No. 3 reactors, but the No. 1 unit was chosen first because the pressures and temperatures in that reactor are higher than in the other two.

Hydrogen explosions occurred in some of the reactors in the days following the March 11 tsunami that greatly damaged the nuclear power plant. The explosions damaged the outer buildings around the reactors. The main cause of the explosions was that the fuel rods, normally covered with water, were exposed and heated up, leading the zirconium in the fuel rods to react with water to form hydrogen, Mr. Morita said.

First off we already know the No 2 reactor has gone critical and China Syndrome, melting through the steel secondary containment boiler vessel and that it's still fissioning burning core pellets and rods are on the (now) wetwell concrete floor and are eating through there at some unknown rate, enough so that it has cracked the concrete out to the ocean wall and is leaking highly toxic water moderator and fission byproducts, both there and into the groundwater. Borating the added fire water they may be able to dump there may or may not have any useful effect on this continued open fission process, it depends entirely on the geometry and if it (the dropped core/ lower rods) has already reached groundwater.

There would be like zero pressure in No 2 with the floor of the vessel already dropped out.

Secondly we were formerly unaware that any of the steel reactor secondary containment boiler pressure vessels themselves had exploded and since they are replacing explosive gases ("injecting" lie) in No 1 this ("Hydrogen explosions occurred in some of the reactors") must mean that both No 2 and No 3 pressure vessels are already exploded and breached, the No 2 gas/pressure explosion having rather fortuitously less-dramatically occurred in (defectively welded or attached external steam circuit)  steam plumbing rather than in the unit itself. SO. the No 3 MOX unit must be breached as well, and they are just unaware of how bad the hydrogen build up problems there might be since it is already freely venting radioactive water, bubbles, gases and vapors to the atmosphere.

We were originally lied to that just the massively wasteful and dangerous heat energy wasting, thermal polluting and inadequately (zero) safety water supplied defective and dangerous, unsafe roof fuel storage pool's rods had melted down to cause the hydrogen gas roof explosions...

Ain't it great to have criminally secretive governments and corporatist disaster agencies you can't ever trust "constantly injecting you" with their constant lies and secrecy?

Fukushima Reactor 2 Core Has Melted Through Reactor

Submitted by Tyler Durden on 04/06/2011 11:00 -0400

Reality    Reuters

This will not be news for most objective Zero Hedge readers as we indicated this is a distinct possibility on several occasions, but some of those more "skeptical" about reality would be interested to know that according to Reuters "the core at Japan's Fukushima nuclear reactor has melted through the reactor pressure vessel", Democratic Congressman Edward Markey told a hearing on the nuclear disaster on Wednesday. "I have been informed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission that the core of Unit Two has gotten so hot that part of it has probably melted through the reactor pressure vessel," said Markey, a prominent nuclear critic in the House of Representatives. Surely there is some bullish spin to this. We are too tired to look for it though.

And never one to not find the silver lining in the mushroom cloud, US nuclear regulator NRC promptly had to add its 2 cents:

A top official from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said on Wednesday it was not clear that Japan's Fukushima No. 2 nuclear reactor has melted through the reactor pressure vessel.

Earlier, Democratic lawmaker Edward Markey told a House of Representatives hearing on the nuclear disaster that the NRC had told him the core had melted through the vessel.

"That's not clear to us, nor is it clear to us that the reactor has penetrated the vessel," said Martin Virgilio, deputy executive director for reactor and preparedness programs at the NRC.

Perhaps in order to make it clear, Mr. Virgilio can go to Fukushima and find out first hand.

Japan Fukushima Nuclear Reactor Radiation Levels Shoot to 100 Sieverts Per Hour
9 April 2011
, by Alexander Higgins (Alexander Higgins Blog)
http://blog.alexanderhiggins.com/2011/04/09/radiation-levels-japan-fukushima-nuclear-reactor-1-shoot-100-sieverts-hour-15871/

Excerpt:

Radiation levels At Japan Fukushima Nuclear Reactor 1 have spiked to 100 sieverts per hour following earthquake aftershock and tsunami. This is far above the 100% lethal dosage of 6 sieverts per hour.

Radiation monitoring charts published by the Japanese government: http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fatmc.jp%2Fplant%2Frad%2F%3Fn%3D1 show that the radiation levels at Fukushima reactor number 1 have spiked to 100 sieverts per hour. It should be noted that it actual radiation could actually be higher because 100 sieverts per hour is the maximum that can be displayed on the chart.

Exposure to this level of radiation will cause immediate death. According to the NIH radiation levels of 4 sieverts per hour will cause fatality in 50% of people and at 6 sieverts per hour death is almost certain. 100 sieverts per hour is far above the 100% lethal dosage amount of 6 sieverts per hour.

----

The radiation spike came after an  earthquake cause to reactors at a separate nuclear power plant to start leaking radiation.

----

Even with the increased radiation spike up to 100 sieverts per hour the Japan government still denies any new damage was caused by the  aftershock to the Fukushima power plant.

----

However, as we all know Japan has not been honest throughout this crisis. It should also be noted that The NY Times recently reported that the Fukushima reactors are very vulnerable to aftershocks at this point because the massive weight in the reactor pools caused by TEPCO trying to inject more water to cool the reactors.

----

To my knowledge there still has not been any official government acknowledgments or statements in regard to the massive radiation spike.

[Contribution] What is Happening in the Reactor Cores of Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station?
24 March 2011
, by Michio Ishikawa (Chief Adviser of Japan Nuclear Technology Institute (JANTI))
http://www.shimbun.denki.or.jp/en/news/20110324_01.html

Excerpt:

When their temperature reaches about 900°C (1652 °F) , they react with surrounding steam and cladding tubes begin oxidizing.

Because this reaction is a strong exothermic reaction, the temperature around such cladding tubes locally increases when oxidization begins.

When the temperature reaches close to 1,300°C (2372 °F), the reaction accelerates and the increase in the temperature of cladding tubes cannot stop.

As a result, the outer surface of cladding is covered by thin oxide films (zirconium dioxide), and the inner surface of cladding tubes also creates the same oxide films by taking away oxide from fuel pellets (uranium dioxide).

In other words, the inner and outer surfaces of cladding tubes are covered by thin oxide films, and zircaloy alloy as the material of cladding tube is sandwiched between them.

It should be noted here that the melting point of oxide film is higher than the melting point of zircaloy, i.e., about 1,800 °C ( 3272 °F), as the material of cladding tube.

Therefore, the sandwiched zircaloy melts and flows down between films to form a puddle.

On the other hand, the inner and outer oxide films stick to each other and are crimped by the reactor pressure onto fuel pellets.

If it is likened, a fuel rod looks like a mass of pellets wrapped by polyethylene wrap.

As the oxide films are strong at high temperatures, even if a fuel rod deforms a little, it keeps sealing radioactivity and standing upright above the water surface.

This is the reason that radioactivity did not leak from fuel rods exposed above the water surface in the accident at the Fukushima power station.

It is no wonder, and it is not an error of measurement, either.

This condition changes at the moment when water is added into a reactor core.

The oxide film becomes brittle when the temperature decreases.

Moreover, as the film cools down and contracts, a fuel rod is divided at the boundary of pellets,

and drops to pieces (not melting)
and such pieces accumulate in the water in a state like a toy box upturned.

They can accumulate in the water because fuel rods under the water surface are sound.

These are the conditions that happened in the reactor core at the time of TMI accident.

TEPCO Confirms Reactor 4 Spent Fuel Pool Is Now An Uncontrolled, Open Air Fission Process
13 April 2011
, by Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge)
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/tepco-confirms-reactor-4-spent-fuel-pool-now-uncontrolled-open-air-fission-process

Excerpt:

It had been a while since we had a factual update (as opposed to just lies and spin) from Fukushima. Courtesy of Kyodo, we now know that what was speculated by some as true, and rebutted by most as mere scaremongering, is in fact, fact.

"Some of the spent nuclear fuel rods stored in the No. 4 reactor building of the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi power plant were confirmed to be damaged, but most of them are believed to be in sound condition, plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday."

Naturally, in one month we will learn that most of them are damaged, and in two months, that each and every one has been demolished.

"The firm known as TEPCO said its analysis of a 400-milliliter water sample taken Tuesday from the No. 4 unit's spent nuclear fuel pool revealed the damage to some fuel rods in such a pool for the first time,

as it detected higher-than-usual levels of radioactive iodine-131, cesium-134 and cesium-137." These confirm an ongoing fission reaction.

In a tremendously ironic development, the No. 4 reactor, halted for a regular inspection before last month's earthquake and tsunami disaster, had all of its 1,331 spent fuel rods and 204 unused fuel rods stored in the pool for the maintenance work.

Unfortunately, the entire pool ended up being damaged following the quake and the subsequent explosion, in essence nullifying any protection that the containment dome would have provided.

As the picture from the Asahi Shimbun below shows, the damage from overhanging structures which have subsequently fallen into the fuel pool likely means that there could well be an uncontrolled, if weak, fission reaction currently going on in the reactor 4 SFP (where the water temperature is currently 90 degree) unprotected by the elements due to the complete destruction of the Reactor 4 shell.

And lastly, a demonstration from Fairewinds' Arnie Gunderson who shows how the Zircalloy uranium pellets mostly likely melted and shattered, possibly penetrating through the floor of reactors 2 and 3.

Fukushima Groundwater Radiation Level Jumps Several Dozen Times In One Week, More Measurement Devices "Fail"
14 April 2011
, by Tyler Durden (Zero Hedge)
http://www.zerohedge.com/article/fukushima-groundwater-radiation-level-jumps-several-dozen-times-one-week-more-measurement-de

Excerpt:

"The concentration levels of radioactive iodine and cesium in groundwater near the troubled Nos. 1 and 2 reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have increased up to several dozen times in one week, suggesting that toxic water has seeped from nearby reactor turbine buildings or elsewhere, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Thursday.

According to the latest findings, a groundwater sample taken April 6 near the No. 1 reactor turbine building showed radioactive iodine-131 of 72 becquerels per cubic meter, with the concentration level growing to 400 becquerels as of Wednesday.

The concentration level of cesium-134 increased from 1.4 becquerels to 53 becquerels."

TEPCO hopes To Start Reducing Radiation Within Three Months

TEPCO hopes nuclear ‘cold shutdown’ in 6-9 months
17 April 2011
, (AFP)
http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/Greek-budget-gap-widens-reuters_molt-2001457097.html

Excerpt:

The operator of Japan's tsunami-hit nuclear plant said Sunday it aims to reduce radiation leaks within three months and to achieve a "cold shutdown" within six to nine months.

----

Radiation has since leaked into the air, soil and sea from the coastal plant northeast of Tokyo, as emergency crews have doused overheating reactors and fuel rod pools to prevent full meltdowns of volatile fuel rods.

TEPCO's chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata said at a press conference that the utility aims to start reducing radiation from the explosion-charred facilities within three months.

Within six to nine months, TEPCO said in a statement, it expects to achieve "cold shutdowns" of all the six reactors, a stable condition in which temperatures drop and radiation leaks fall dramatically.

"As the short-term targets, we have set two steps," said Katsumata. "Step one is to steadily reduce the amount of radiation.

"In step two, we aim to control the release of radioactive substances and greatly control the amount of radiation."

"There are various risks ahead," he added. "But we aim to complete step one in about three months and step two in another three to six months."

TEPCO also said that an initial focus would be on preventing hydrogen explosions in the reactors one, two and three by injecting nitrogen, and on avoiding further releases of radioactive water into the environment.

New cooling may be installed at Fukushima reactors
16 April 2011
, (MarketWatch)
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/new-cooling-may-be-installed-at-fukushima-reactors-2011-04-16

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (9501.TO) is considering installing circulating water cooling systems for nuclear reactors and spent fuel storage pools outside the reactor buildings at its crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, sources familiar with the matter toll Kyodo news service Saturday.

According to the Kyodo report, the new systems would cool nuclear fuel inside the reactors and spent fuel pools in a stable manner. They would involve heat exchangers and circulation pumps to drain reactor coolant water from the containment buildings, cooling it with seawater and then sending it back to the reactors, the sources said.

TEPCO appears to have already placed orders for dozens of gasketed plate heat exchangers--each measuring 3 meters high, 1 meter wide and 2 meters long--for such systems, the sources told Kyodo.

The existing circulating water cooling systems at the plant were crippled by the March 11 earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

The utility has been pumping water into reactors and storage pools in a desperate bid to cool them. But the move has created large puddles of water contaminated with high levels of radiation inside the reactor containment and turbine buildings, as fuel rods in the reactors and storage pools have been partially damaged, Kyodo reported.

The presence of the large puddles in the buildings has blocked restoration work at the plant, the report said.

TEPCO has therefore determined that it is necessary to cool the reactors and storage pools with new circulating water cooling systems to be installed outside the containment buildings, the sources told Kyodo.

N. Korea TV reports seriousness of radioactive leaks at Japan plant
PYONGYANG, April 18, Kyodo
http://english.kyodonews.jp/news/2011/04/86104.html

North Korea's state television has reported the seriousness of continued radioactive leakages at a Japanese nuclear power plant hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that devastated northeastern Japan.

In a Korean Central Television Station program broadcast Sunday night, experts voiced concern about the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant.

''What is most serious is that even a month after the accident, we see no prospects of getting radioactive leakages under control, an expert said.

Another expert warned, ''There is a possibility that unexpected radioactive substances may leak (out of the plant).''

Similarly, the official Korean Central News Agency and the Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, reported that radioactive contamination has been spreading to not only the air but also soil and the ocean environment.

KCNA and the paper quoted the Japanese nuclear watchdog as saying earlier that Japan had raised the level of severity of the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant from 5 to 7, putting it on par with the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

The crisis at the Fukushima plant ''is getting more serious,'' KCNA said.

Neither the state TV, KCNA and the Rodong Sinmun referred to a plan unveiled Sunday by the Fukushima plant operator, Tokyo Electric Power Co., to put the troubled reactors at the plant under control in six to nine months.

And as the latest ZAMG data indicate, there could well be a spike in radiation of proximal cities, since the wind over the next 24 hours is blowing from the Ocean,

as well as radioactivity over Russia, which will likely be rather frowned upon: after all Russia is now the energetic white knight providing the marginal energy that Japan needs.

Japan declares no-go zone near nuclear plant, as evacuees rush to collect belongings
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/sns-ap-as-japan-earthquake,0,3608283.story
ERIC TALMADGE
Associated Press
5:28 a.m. CDT, April 21, 2011

FUTABA, Japan (AP) — Residents rushed back into the 12-mile (20-kilometer) evacuation zone around Japan's radiation-spewing nuclear power plant Thursday, grabbing whatever belongings they could before an order went into effect legally banning entry to the area.

A stream of evacuees ventured into deserted towns near the plant, some in white protective suits and others in face masks and rain gear they hoped would protect against radiation. Most raced through the zone with car windows closed, their vehicles crammed with clothing and valuables.

"This is our last chance, but we aren't going to stay long. We are just getting what we need and getting out," said Kiyoshi Kitajima, an X-ray technician, who dashed to his hospital in Futaba, a town next-door to the plant, to collect equipment before the order went into effect at midnight.

Officials said the order announced Thursday was meant to limit exposure to radiation leaking from the plant and to prevent thefts. Almost all the zone's nearly 80,000 residents left when the area was evacuated on March 12, but police had not been able to legally block them from going back.

----------------------------------------------------
Check out our crossword, sudoku and Jumble puzzles >> (<-- no kidding, stuck in the middle of this article! Escape hatch, go back to sleep....)
----------------------------------------------------

Police had no estimate Thursday of the exact number of people who have returned to the zone or who still might be living there.

Under a special nuclear emergency law, people who enter the zone will now be subject to fines of up to 100,000 yen ($1,200) or possible detention of up to 30 days. Up to now, defiance of the evacuation order was not punishable by law.

The order angered some residents who fled their homes nearly empty-handed when they were told to evacuate after last month's tsunami and earthquake wrecked the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant's power and cooling systems.

"I initially thought we would be able to return within a few days. So I brought nothing except a bank card," said Kazuko Suzuki, 49, also from Futaba.

"I really want to go back. I want to check if our house is still there," said Suzuki, who fled with her teenage son and daughter. "My patience has run out. I just want to go home."

The no-go order was not due to any particular change in conditions inside the plant, which appear to have somewhat stabilized. Even under the best-case scenario, however, the plant's operator says it will take at least six months to bring its reactors safely into a cold shutdown.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said authorities would arrange brief visits, allowing one person per household to return by bus for a maximum of two hours to collect necessary belongings. Participants would have to go through radiation screening, he said.

"We beg the understanding of residents. We really want residents not to enter the areas," Edano told reporters. "Unfortunately, there are still some people in the areas."

Residents chafed at the limit to just one person per household.

No visits will be allowed in a two mile (three kilometer) area closest to the plant, said Hidehiko Nishiyama of Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, confirming reports that zone would be completely off-limits.

Details were still being worked out.

Katsunobu Sakurai, mayor of Minami Soma, where about half the 71,000 residents lived in areas that will now be off-limits, questioned the rationale for the way the evacuation zone was decided.

"It feels like some outsider who doesn't know anything about our geography sat at a desk and drew these circles," Sakurai said. "The zones have zero scientific basis. Radiation doesn't travel in neat circles. Just putting up circles around the plant is unreasonable."

Prime Minister Naoto Kan, who has been under fire from the opposition over the government's handling of the crisis, visited the region Thursday, giving a giving a pep talk to workers at a nuclear crisis management center in Fukushima.

Fukushima's governor, who has also been critical of the government's performance, said he urged Kan to ensure the government properly handles the disaster and related compensation issues.

"I told the prime minister that I strongly hope that evacuees can return home as early as possible," said the governor, Yuhei Sato.

Meanwhile, new data from Japan's National Police Agency showed that two-thirds of the victims identified in last month's earthquake and tsunami were elderly — and almost all of them drowned.

The agency said 65 percent of the 11,108 confirmed fatalities of known age were 60 or older. Another 1,899 victims were of unknown age.

Adding those who are still missing, the earthquake and resulting tsunami killed an estimated 27,500 people. The police agency said nearly 93 percent of the victims had drowned. Others perished in fires, were crushed to death or died from other causes.

The northeastern coast hardest hit by the disasters had a high concentration of elderly residents.

Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren,  ye have done it unto me.
