Ground Zero Blaze Kills 2 Firefighters

Two firefighters were killed Saturday battling a blaze that tore through several floors of the vacant Deutsche Bank skyscraper opposite ground zero Saturday afternoon, sending potentially toxic plumes of smoke over Lower Manhattan in a scene eerily reminiscent of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. One of the firefighters died of cardiac arrest, a fire official said, adding that it was unclear what caused the other death. The fire appeared to have started between the 14th and 15th floors and spread from there to other portions of the tower, which once stood 41 stories, including scaffolding propped against its side, fire officials said. Crowds of onlookers watched as burning debris fell to the street below.

The cause of the fire was unknown. But the building, which was heavily damaged during the Sept. 11 attack, was being dismantled piece by piece because of toxic leftovers from that day nearly six years ago. Much of that work involved acetylene torches. In addition to asbestos, the building had been laden with excessive levels of seven hazardous substances, including dioxin, lead and chromium. Workers had removed about 15 stories, at 130 Liberty Street, before Saturday. City and environmental officials reached Saturday could not immediately say whether the acrid smoke billowing over the area contained harmful contaminants, but many nearby residents remain distrustful of the air quality since the 9/11 attacks. The fire started around 3:30 p.m., sending hundreds of firefighters, as well as city, state and federal officials to the site; at least some of these officials were wearing protective masks like those worn by doctors at a hospital.

Bonnie Bellow, a spokeswoman with the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said work was being performed at the building yesterday, as on most Saturdays. The shift ended at 3:30 p.m., right around the time the Fire Department received the first reports of a fire at the building. Ms. Bellow said there were 12 air-quality monitors installed in and around the building. One of these monitors is on the 15th floor scaffold, two others are on the rooftops of adjacent buildings, and several others are on the ground, she said. "At this point, we're gathering whatever results we can from these monitors," Ms. Bellow added. "For some of the contaminants, we can get instant readings, but other contaminants require further analysis of the monitors' readings at a laboratory." She could not provide more specifics. Mary Costello, a spokeswoman for Bovis Lend Lease, the construction company in charge of the building's dismantlement, deferred all comments to the Fire Department.

Two firefighters were killed and at least 18 others were injured Saturday after a bank building overlooking New York's Ground Zero site caught fire, the New York Fire Department said. The blaze occurred when scaffolding caught fire on the former Deutsche Bank building. The firefighters died as a result of cardiac problems following smoke inhalation, said department spokeswoman Eileen Ramos.  "We have 18 firefighters that have been taken to the hospital, but we believe none of them have life-threatening injuries," she told AFP.  Firefighters put out the blaze but smoke continued to rise for several hours, appearing thickest around the 15th floor of the 40-story building. The skyscraper was under construction after being pulled down following the extremist attacks of September 11, 2001, fire battalion chief Wes Schelling said. There is another point that has not been mentioned thus far.
The Deutsche Bank building is where human remains were found on the rooftop.  Because of that, the renovation stopped and the search for more remains continues up to the present time. 

My theory about the news blackout is that we are to be good little boys and girls and move on and rebuild without any regard for the families who have never recovered any remains at all.  We must think only good thoughts.

Mayor Bloomberg is great for minimalizing everything.  The toxicology
reports are not complete, yet he tells everyone the air is safe.  Now that sounds familiar, doesn't it?

It was a normal fire nothing special about it. Yes poor men did die and that does happen alot more often then we would like, but it was on the front page of the news paper. There was no blackout!!!

Oneshot-Got to disagree with you on that one man, a 7 alarm fire, with a reported 450 firefighters/emergency rescue workers responding, 2 deaths and 18 injuries, that took roughly 7 and one half hours to contain, in a building that is located not only near ground zero but adjacent to Wall Street, and that has been widely reported to have high levels of toxicity within it walls and that why they didn't blow the bldg in place. 

Now one would think that putting aside the issues of all the speculation that is going on with events surrounding the building, at the very least this is a story should be reported with a public concern issue in mind.  Not only with a possible collapse (keep in mind that I'm talking about at the time not now) but the airborne release of toxic fumes and particulates being let loose due to the fire and the efforts to put it out as the reason.  It seems to me that it was rather odd that they choose to report about a bunch of other crap, and not a public safety issue.

Yeah KABC Channel 7 spent a whole 5 minutes on it on the 11pm news.  They also had Bloomberg give about a 10 minute press conference, which was showed in total only on the web.  At least that is what I was told as I don't live in NY.  Aside from those things, nobody else reported anything about it as far as I could tell. 

As to the National scene, I would think that if Wall Street were to become a zone of toxicity that they couldn't start trading on Monday, then it would be a national issue.  If that were to happen, it would more than likely take anywhere from 1-8 weeks to remediate the buildings before they would allow human occupancy again.  If that were to happen, I would say that the economy would go in the toilet pretty quick.
