MK: I was listening to Webster Tarpley’s breakdown of events in the region and he seems to be think that the U.S. is behind these revolts. I have a lot of respect for Tarpley and appreciate his wealth of knowledge and comprehensive understanding of history, but I have to disagree with him on this one. The U.S. has a really nice little earner in keeping the status quo as is in the region and I believe the U.S. is as surprised by these events as anyone. The people themselves have finally said ‘Basta’ (or the Arab equivalent) and are looking to dump the kleptocratic regime and try something new. Provocateurs have appeared to complicate matters. The fact that it took so long for them to appear, unlike, let’s say, the provocateurs that were active day 1 at the RNC and DNC conventions in the U.S. in 2008 adds credence, IMO, to the idea that these are organic, populist revolts that will soon have sympathy events flaring in the U.S., Canada, and Australia. The wild card is China. They quickly clamped down on any news of these events to the locals, but will that work?
