Defense of Constitution tops Giffords' priorities

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords sent this guest opinion to the Star Friday outlining her priorities for the 112th Congress.

I took the congressional oath of office for a third time this week, and the most important of the 71 words in that oath was my vow to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic."

These words are especially critical and poignant this year as we commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our country.

As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am committed to ensuring our military personnel have the training, equipment and leadership they need to combat extremists who seek to do us harm.

When American and British forces launched the war in Afghanistan, our military goal was - and is - clear: Remove the Taliban from power, track down al-Qaida terrorists and allow the people of Afghanistan to run their own country.

As our military concentrates on al-Qaida - a direct threat to our national security - there are other threats that will command my attention this year.

The first is of special concern to those of us in Southern Arizona: the continued inability of our federal government to secure our border with Mexico.

My district is one of 10 in the nation abutting Mexico - a country where more than 30,000 people have been murdered during a drug-fueled civil war that has jeopardized the safety of our citizens. In 2010, this violence led to the murder of Southern Arizona rancher Rob Krentz and Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

We must extend the stay of National Guard troops. We must increase the number of Border Patrol agents on the border. We must continue to invest in technology including unmanned aerial surveillance, forward operating bases and improved cell-phone service.

The second threat is our dependence on imported oil - much of which comes from nations hostile to our principles. Our enemies are aware of our reliance on oil and use it to their advantage.

The Department of Defense is the world's largest consumer of energy. We must accelerate the production of biofuels for aviation, promote large-scale renewable energy projects at defense facilities, study the integration of hybrid technology into tactical vehicles and require the military to derive 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

The third stealth threat to our security is the decline in the number of Americans with college degrees. The United States once was the global leader in the percentage of young people with degrees. But today we have fallen to 12th among 36 developed nations.

I am especially concerned about our shortfalls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). U.S. high school seniors recently tested below the international average for 21 countries in math and science. These students will be poorly equipped to keep our nation's defense industries the world's best and to protect our information networks against cyber threats.

I have worked to create and sustain programs at the National Science Foundation that strengthen these education programs. I strongly supported the America COMPETES Act that updated teacher scholarship programs to train highly competent secondary teachers in STEM fields.

The fourth, and most important, threat to our nation is our $14 trillion debt. This is why I introduced legislation on the first full day of the new session to cut the salaries of members of Congress by 5 percent.

Cutting congressional salaries sends a clear message that lawmakers are prepared to make sacrifices to get our economic house in order. The recent report by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform is a starting point for a much-needed national discussion on this critical issue.

The commission report includes several ideas that I support, including aggressive deficit reduction targets, discretionary spending caps and a sunset commission to cut wasteful spending and invest federal dollars where they are most needed.

We are a great nation, but these threats to our national security can leave us fragile. We cannot succumb to such menaces.

On 18th September, Friends of the Earth (FoE) US, which requested analysis of Taco Bell taco shells, broke the news that the product contained a variety of GM maize called StarLink which is approved in the United States for use in animal feed but not for human consumption. The US Food and Drug Administration acknowledged the accuracy of the testing carried out for FoE at Genetic-ID in Iowa. Kraft Foods, part of the Philip Morris conglomerate, which markets the Taco Bell brand issued a national recall of the product a few days later. Biotech giant Aventis, which produces StarLink, has agreed with the US government to buy back all the StarLink maize grown in the US this year, a move that is estimated to cost the company some US$ 90 – 100M.

FoE is calling for Safeway to immediately withdraw any suspect products from its supermarkets. "Safeway should follow Kraft Foods and recall the genetically contaminated taco shells," said Larry Bohlen, Director of Health and Environment Programs at Friends of the Earth. "Two contamination incidents in one month show that the FDA is doing a miserable job protecting the American food supply".

Friends of the Earth Europe is investigating possible contamination of food products in the European Union. "We wrote to Kraft and Philip Morris corporate European headquarters straight after the Taco Bell story broke," said Gill Lacroix, Biotechnology Coordinator at FoEE in Brussels. OMFG...AJ has already been implicated in every false flag since the USS Maine. Every time they do it, they have to issue a redaction or they end up losing thousands if not millions of subscribers. SPLC is just thowing crap at the wall and this guy is the fricking patsy.

...Potok deceitfully attempts to connect him to author Ayn Rand’s We The Living while ignoring Loughner’s praise for the Communist Manifesto and national socialist Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

Even more outrageously, Potok excerpts a vague term used by Loughner about “conscience dreaming,” which he says he studied in college, and links it to new age speaker, British author and ‘conspiracy theorist’ David Icke, despite the fact that nothing known about Loughner has ever mentioned Icke or his work. Not only is this an example of unjustified guilt-by-association, but David Icke has manifestly promoted non-violence throughout his decades of work. Further ‘conscious dreaming’ is a term often linked to yoga practices and Eastern philosophy not “radical” right wing ideology.

Because Loughner allegedly posted statements about gold and silver-backed currency on his MySpace and other postings, Mark Potok further connects Loughner to right wingers on this point; however, it is the Constitution, in Article I Section 10, which demands that “No State shall… make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts.”

Loughner’s You Tube account further includes a bizarre video titled, “How to: Your New Currency,” wherein he makes such incoherent and repetitive statements as “If I’m thinking of creating a new coin that’s in my control as treasurer then I’m thinking my new coin is starting a new currency system. I’m thinking of creating a new coin that’s in my control as treasurer. Hence I’m thinking my new coin is starting a new currency system.”

Regardless of why Loughner advocated gold & silver currency, the position has nothing to do with violent action, nor is it patently connected to the so-called “radical right.”

Potok and his Southern Poverty Law Center are searching for a broader enemy so they can demonize political opponents and chill free speech in general. Jared Lee Loughner’s actions are deplorable and disgusting, but there is no reason to believe it was motivated, endorsed or encouraged by the right wing or any other known political faction. Indeed, the motivation for the accused assassin’s shootings may be hard to pinpoint, as he has many incoherent ramblings which may add up to nothing in particular at all.

Sticks & Stones, Not Words, Cause Injury

Even if other clues about Loughner’s background– such as his being a liberal atheist, critic of ‘government-controlled’ grammar, admirer of the Communist Manifesto, of death music and abortion, or anti-semitic groups– played a role in his going overboard, it is no reason to demonize anyone else matching that background. Potok’s words are influential, and he should be more cautious about casting blame in the direction of any given political movement. Already publications like Politico and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel have run with the idea that Loughner’s murders and near-fatal shootings were triggered by right wing ‘conspiracy theorists.’

Until there is evidence this shooting was caused by anyone other than Loughner himself, people like Potok should put down the blame game. Everyone recognizes that this incident was a tragedy. Read the whole interview, it is mind boggling. Basically, the SPLC is set up to stop any resistance of jews, catholics, anybody opposed to Nazi concentration camps and a foreign takeover of the US. Just look :
