TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Marana School District spokeswoman Tamara Crawley said the man suspected in the shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was a student in the school district for at least five years.

She said Jared Laughner attended Tortolita Middle School and three years of high school at Marana Mountain View High School. He formally withdrew from the high school in the summer after his junior year, Crawley said.

She said she could not say anything more about him, his school record or his behavior. She said information about students is private.

UPDATE: The T.V. people are saying that Congresswoman Giffords read a part of the Constitution during the little stunt put on by the House earlier this week. Her section? “…or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”

UPDATE: It shouldn’t surprise any lawyers that the Judge was not “participating” in the Gabrielle Giffords supermarket meet-and-greet where the shooting took place. Instead, television reports say that Judge Roll happened to live a couple of blocks away from the supermarket. He decided to drop by to say hello to the Congresswoman.

Mark Kelly will command space shuttle Endeavour on the final space shuttle mission: STS-134. Kelly and his crew will deliver the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) to the International Space Station. AMS is a 15,000 lb cosmic particle detector that will be installed on the outside of ISS. Its experiments will help researchers study the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter and antimatter.

TUCSON, Ariz. - Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head Saturday and at least 19 others were wounded when an assailant opened fire in an area where the lawmaker was meeting with constituents, officials said.

According to Dr. Peter Rhee at the University Medical Center, of the admitted patients, 5 are critical, 5 are undergoing surgery.  A 9-year-old girl has died, along with 5 other people.



The US Marshals service says a Federal judge, John Roll, was fatally shot during the attack.  He had faced up to 200 death threats recently because of a case that he ruled on about illegal immigrants versus an Arizona rancher.

U.S. Capitol police say the shooter, 22-year-old Jared Loughner, a white male, is in custody as one official said he carried out the attack with an automatic weapon. The officials who described the events did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not permitted to comment publicly.

Federal law enforcement officials were poring over captured versions of a MySpace page that belonged to Jared Loughner and over Youtube video published to the Internet weeks ago under an account " Classitup10 " and linked to him. The MySpace page , which was removed within minutes of the gunman being identified by U.S. officials, included a mysterious "Goodbye friends" message published hours before the shooting and exhorted his friends to "Please don't be mad at me."

In one of several Youtube videos, which featured text against a dark background, Loughner described inventing a new U.S. currency and complained about the illiteracy rate among people living in Giffords' congressional district in Arizona. Two spellings of his last name were given in the aftermath of the shooting -- Loughner and Laughner.

"I know who's listening: Government Officials, and the People," Loughner wrote. "Nearly all the people, who don't know this accurate information of a new currency, aren't aware of mind control and brainwash methods. If I have my civil rights, then this message wouldn't have happen (sic)."

We're hearing that Loughner held a Glock hand gun to Giffords' head.

Loughner was shot during the attack.

U.S. officials who provided his name to the AP spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release it publicly.

President Obama calls the shooting "an unspeakable tragedy" and that such "a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society."



Rhee says Giffords is in critical condition following surgery and is optimistic. The bullet went through her right temple and her brain.

Congressional officials said one of the victims died soon after the attack, and others were taken to a nearby hospital. The officials said the wounded included some of Gifford's aides who were with her at the time.

Three hours after the shooting, the L-shaped shopping center inTucson was blocked off by police and had fire trucks and other  vehicles in its parking lot that blocked the view of the store's front door. No shell casing could be seen from the area 500 yards from the store where reporters and photographers were kept.

One official added the attack was carried out with an automatic weapon. The officials who described the events did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not permitted to comment publicly.

"I am horrified by the senseless attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and members of her staff," newly elected House Speaker John Boehner said. "An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country."

They said the FBI and local law enforcement were investigating the attack, which took place while Giffords was greeting constituents outside a Safeway grocery store.

Giffords, 40, was re-elected to her third term last November. She was a member of the Arizona House and Senate before coming to Washington.

Giffords was elected to Congress amid a wave of Democratic victories in the 2006 election. The former state lawmaker won a narrow victory against a tea party favorite in the 2010 election.

The shooting comes amid a highly charged political environment that has seen several dangerous threats against lawmakers but nothing that reached the point of actual violence.
