MARANA, Ariz. (KGUN9- TV) - The arrest of an Arizona man who caused a bomb scare Wednesday in Washington, D.C. comes as no surprise to one of his former Pima County neighbors.

U.S. Park police arrested 66-year-old James Patock of Pima County after finding guns, ammunition and other items in his truck parked on the National Mall.   According to the police report,  officers found propane tanks wired to car batteries and a generator in Patock's vehicle.  His truck windows were blocked with alluminum foil.

Patock is charged with carrying a pistol without a license, having unregistered ammunition and with other firearms offenses.

9 On Your Side spoke with Patock's former neighbor, Jim McFarland, who says Patock owned several guns and displayed aggressive behavior when he knew him a few years ago.   KGUN9 News reporter Jessica Chapin asked, "How would you describe his character?"

"Weird," McFarland responded, "He hated the president. He hated everything. He said if he got a chance he would shoot the president."

Charles Guiteau assassinated President James A. Garfield on July 2, 1881. The theologian and lawyer had, according to documents held by The Library of Congress, "decided that God had commanded him to kill" Garfield, whom Guiteau thought he had gotten elected by writing and delivering a speech. Guiteau insisted that he had been legally insane at the time of the shooting.

Garfield was shot by Charles J. Guiteau on July 2, 1881, just a few months after taking office. Gives Names of Other Anarchists.  Nowak gave the police the names of other members of the Anarchist society to which Czolgosz belonged in Cleveland. Czolgosz says his parents came from Russian Poland, and that he was born in Detroit twenty-six years ago. He received some education in the common schools of that city, but left school and went to work when a boy as a blacksmith's apprentice. Later he went to work at Cleveland and then went to Chicago.

Saloon-keeper John Schrank shot Theodore Roosevelt on Oct. 13, 1912, as he was preparing to give a speech. Roosevelt gave the speech, saying, "It takes more than one bullet to bring down a Bull Moose." Schrank was found legally insane and institutionalized.

This one is absolutely fascinating. It seems to be a heck of a bit of American history that everyone should research. Here is a summary of a report on the matter written in 1912. It seems that he was deeply influenced by a secret order as well. Looks like it may be the Oriental Orthodoxy Order, but not sure. It also seems to relate to the coerced manipulations of a deep false collapsing of lawful petitioning of greivances with radical and violent anti-government distorted dogma. This may be one of the very first mind controlled assassins on US soil who has a limited link to the "Order" that controlled him. But through his extensive writing, there could be much uncovered. It is oddly coincidental that his insane and demented mind was donated to a Jesuit University upon his death. It looks like the new model of this type of patsy assassin is not given as much rights to his mind so therefore wild and random gibberish covers up links to controllers. Or maybe the guy was just a nutcase. Anyway, here is the summary report:

Giuseppe Zangara attempted to shoot President-elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt on Feb. 15, 1933, in Miami, but instead killed Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak. Zangara apparently came to believe that President Herbert Hoover had caused his recurring physical pain and sought the assassinations of "all capitalist presidents and kings." Before he was executed in Florida's electric chair, Zangara famously said, "Push the button!"

Richard Paul Pavlick had started to assassinate President John F. Kennedy. He had loaded his 1950 Buick with dynamite and had intended to crash his car into the president's while he was vacationing. Pavlick changed his mind when he saw Kennedy with his wife and daughter. He spent six years in federal prisons and mental institutions before being released in 1966.

Researching

Lee Harvey Oswald was accused of assassinating Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963. The Warren Commission investigated the murder after Oswald was killed and found that he was the lone gunman. The commission concluded that Oswald was a disturbed man, whose radical political views and depression led him to shoot the president.

Interesting point - As Giffords happened to be Jewish, I was waiting for the usual suspects (ADL, SPLC, etc.) to claim this as a hate crime, and we are starting to see that a little bit.  Helped along by the listing of Mein Kampf as one of the shooter's favorite books (along with the communist manifesto).

But Mother Jones magazine is reporting that Loughner's mother is Jewish.  Which probably means nothing, ultimately, except it may affect how this plays out in the media.  Loughner himself seems to be athiest, nihilist and believed (or was programmed to believe) in weird ideas about creating a Matrix like alternative reality through lucid dreaming.  But traditionally having a Jewish mother classifies one as at least nominally Jewish, so that may interfere with any plan to portray Loughner as a Nazi.  Though we may here he was a "self hating Jew".

There's something offensive, as well as pointless, about the politically charged inquiry into what might have been swirling inside the head of Jared Loughner. We hear that the accused shooter read The Communist Manifesto and liked flag-burning videos—good news for the right. Wait—he was a devotee of Ayn Rand and favored the gold standard, so he was a right-winger after all. Some assassinations embody an ideology, however twisted. Based on what we know so far, the Tucson killings look like more like politically tinged schizophrenia.

It is appropriate, however, to consider what was swirling outside Loughner's head. To call his crime an attempted assassination is to acknowledge that it appears to have had a political and not merely a personal context. That context wasn't Islamic radicalism, Puerto Rican independence, or anarcho-syndicalism. It was the anti-government, pro-gun, xenophobic populism that flourishes in the dry and angry climate of Arizona. Extremist shouters didn't program Loughner, in some mechanistic way, to shoot Gabrielle Giffords. But the Tea Party movement did make it appreciably more likely that a disturbed person like Loughner would react, would be able to react, and would not be prevented from reacting, in the crazy way he did.

A close friend says that Loughner was clean at the time he was allegedly rejected from the military for failing a drug test:

In October 2008, Tierney was living in Phoenix, and Loughner came to visit. They went to see a Mars Volta concert with friends, and Tierney was surprised when Loughner said he had quit partying "completely." Loughner, according to Tierney, said, "I'm going to lead a more healthy lifestyle, not smoke cigarettes or pot anymore, and I'm going to start working out." Tierney was happy for his friend: "I said, 'Dude, that's awesome.' And the next time I saw him he was 10 pounds lighter." Tierney never saw Loughner smoke marijuana again, and he was surprised at media reports that Loughner had been rejected from the military in 2009 for failing a drug test: "He was clean, clean. I saw him after that continuously. He would not do it."

Tucson, Arizona (CNN) -- The Arizona Legislature is expected to pass legislation Tuesday that will bar protesters at funerals from getting within 300 feet of services, a spokesman for the state House said.

The action, according to House spokesman Daniel Scarpinato, is in direct response to a controversial church's announcement that it will picket the funeral of Christina Green, the 9-year-old who was among six people killed during Saturday's attempted assassination of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona.

Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, has made its name by staging protests at funerals of people who died of AIDS, gay people, soldiers and even Coretta Scott King...

In the wake of a mass shooting in Arizona that left six dead and one congresswoman in the hospital, some Republican lawmakers seem to be most worried about finding ways to protect themselves.

Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN) wants to enclose the House Gallery in "a transparent and substantial material" such as Plexiglas, an aide told CBS News.

His legislation aims to keep the public from being able to throw explosives or other materials at members while they are on the House floor.

It's not the first time Burton has proposed such a measure. An earlier bill reads, "The Architect of the Capitol shall enclose the visitors' galleries of the House of Representatives with a transparent and substantial material, and shall install equipment so that the proceedings on the floor of the House of Representatives will be clearly audible in the galleries."

The bill cites past attacks on Congress, including a 1915 bombing by an anti-war protester, the shooting of five members of Congress during a vote in 1954, and a 1971 bomb placed in the Senate bathroom by the Weather Underground. It's not clear how the proposed legislation would have made a difference in the case of the Weather Underground bomb.

Speaker Boehner Invites President Obama to Deliver State of the Union Jan. 25

Speaker of the House John Boehner wrote a letter to President Obama today inviting him to offer an address on the State of the Union Tuesday, January 25 before a Joint Session of Congress.

In the letter, Boehner, R-Ohio, referenced the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Arizona, and said the tragedy in Tucson is an opportunity for elected officials to renew their commitment to public service.

“Recent events have reminded us of the imperfect nature of our representative democracy, but also how much we cherish the ideal that our government exists to serve the people,” Boehner said. “Even in the wake of tragedy, we must never waiver from our obligation to carry out their will and provide solutions to keep moving our nation forward.”

Boehner also seemed to address the bitter political discourse in Washington, writing to the president about the potential opportunity for Republicans to find “common ground” with the White House and Congressional Democrats...

The whole Arizona indecent is probably going to be used to "cap" and "restrain" the First and Second amendments. Once they take away the First Amendment we can be "forbidden" to object - in public, in the media or in print - to the restraint of the Second Amendment.

When Congress meets on January 25 at a Joint Session President Obama will most likely accept Speaker of the House John Boehner's invitation to deliver a State of the Union address.

Who knows what draconian legislation they have prepared. Like the Patriot Act there will be no time to review or comment and such comment would no doubt be slammed as callus and "unpatriotic".

Less than an hour later, Congress issued a formal declaration of war against Japan and officially brought the U.S. into World War II. This address is regarded as one of the most famous American political speeches of the 20th century.
• On September 20, 2001, president George W. Bush gave a speech before a joint session of Congress in response to the September 11 attacks.

When Hitler was appointed in January 1933, Germany was a democracy. One week before the election was due to take place, the Reichstag building burned down.

Hitler asked Hindenburg to grant him emergency powers in view of the 'communist takeover'. Using the constitution, Hindenburg agreed to pass the Law for the Protection of the People and the State.

This law gave Hitler what he wanted - a ban on the Communists and Socialists taking part in an election campaign.

The leaders from both parties were arrested and their newspapers were shut down. To 'keep the peace' and maintain law and order, the SA (the Brown Shirts) roamed the streets beating up those who openly opposed Hitler.

The election took place in March - though Hitler was convinced it would be the last.
Hitler did not get the number of votes he wanted but he did get enough to get over a 50% majority in the Reichstag:
Communists    4.8 million votes
Social Democrats    7.2 million votes
Centre party    5.5 million votes
Nationalists    3.1 million votes
Other parties    1.4 million votes
Nazis               17.3 million votes

That 12 million people voted for what were effectively two outlawed parties is remarkable when the intimidation of voters is taken into account.

After the burning down of the Reichstag, politicians had nowhere to meet. The Kroll Opera House in Berlin was chosen. This was a relatively small round building - perfect for meetings. On March 23rd, elected officials were due to meet to discuss and vote on Hitler's Enabling Law.  

As politicians neared the building, they found it surrounded by SS and SA thugs who tried to ensure that only Nazi or Nationalist politicians got into the building. The vote for this law was crucial as it gave Hitler a vast amount of power. The law basically stated that any bill only needed Hitler's signature and within 24 hours that bill would become law in Germany. With only Nazis and other right wing politicians inside the Kroll Opera House, the bill was quickly passed into law. The act gave Hitler what he wanted - dictatorial power. What he wanted would become law in Germany within 24 hours of his signature being put on paper.

On 7th April 1933, Nazi officials were put in charge of all local government in the provinces.

On May 2nd 1933, trades unions were abolished, their funds taken and their leaders put in prison. The workers were given a May Day holiday in return.

On July 14th 1933, a law was passed making it illegal to form a new political party. It also made the Nazi Party the only legal political party in Germany.

Germany became a nation of snoops. People were employed in each street, in each building complex etc. with the sole purpose of keeping an eye on others in their 'area' and reporting them to the authorities if they believed that something was amiss. The reputation of the Nazi police and the secret police lead by Himmler was such that no-one wished to cause offence. People kept their thoughts to themselves unless they wished to invite trouble. In this sense, Nazi Germany was a nation run on fear of the government. Hitler had created a one party state within months of being appointed chancellor.

His only remaining problem from his point of view was loyalty within his own party ranks. In June 1934, he overcame this with the Night of the Long Knives.


President Obama is expected to accept the invitation, avoiding any potential scheduling disagreement similar to the one experienced after the congressional midterm elections.
