I was never one of those who believed the Bush administration was getting ready to attack Iran in 2006 or early 2007. But it is now clear that at least Vice President Dick Cheney is conspiring to push through a specific plan for war with Iran. And Senator Joe Lieberman is an active part of that conspiracy. We have known for a long time that Cheney wants a major air attack on Iranian nuclear sites and other military and economic targets. But an August 9 story published by McClatchy newspapers reveals that, instead of waiting for a decision to go ahead with such a strategic attack against Iran, Cheney now hopes to get Bush to approve an attack on camps in Iran where Iraqi Shiite militiamen have allegedly been trained in recent years. The McClatchy story says Cheney proposed such a strike within the administration "several weeks ago," citing "two U.S. officials who are involved in Iran policy." The official sources say Cheney "argued for military action if hard new evidence emerges of Iran's complicity in supporting anti-American forces in Iraq." An example of such "hard new evidence," according to one of the official sources of the report, would be "catching a truckload of fighters or weapons crossing into Iraq from Iran." The story also indicates that the same officials say Condoleezza Rice "opposes this idea" and suggest that Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates agrees with her position. The Cheney proposal for an airstrike against three bases in Iran can have only one purpose -- to provoke an Iranian retaliation that would then make it possible to unleash a full-fledged strategic air attack against Iran. The provocation strategy would be an obvious way around the political obstacles in the way of an unprovoked attack.

The US is a signatory to the UN Charter, a constituent treaty among the nations of the world. Article II, Section 4 of the UN Charter states, "all members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. . ." Even the threat of a war of aggression is illegal. Article VI of the US Constitution makes such treaties the Supreme Law of the Land. This Administration, has openly threatened aggression against Iran in violation of the US Constitution and the UN Charter. This week the House Appropriations committee removed language from the Iraq war funding bill requiring the Administration, under Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 of the Constitution, to seek permission before it launched an attack against Iran. Since war with Iran is an option of this Administration and since such war is patently illegal, then impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran. The Politico explains why Kucinich chose to use a privileged resolution for the impeachment effort. The privilege approach allows him to circumvent Democratic leadership, which opposes voting on the measure. His resolution will be met with a motion to table it. A vote against the motion will be a vote in favor of impeaching Cheney ... The Hill throws more light on why Kucinich chose this particular strategy. When the motion is offered, it can either be passed, sent to a committee or killed with a “motion to table.” Sending it to committee avoids an immediate floor vote and might be the most appealing option to the Democratic leadership. Congressional Democratic leaders are not thrilled with Kucinich's crusade, and as explained in The Hill report, they could chose to kill it by sending it to committee to head off an immediate floor vote. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made it clear back in April when Kucinich first formally began the impeachment moves that impeachment against President George W. Bush or his vice was "off the table." And according to the The Hill Pelosi and other congressional Democratic leaders are still against it because of a possible backlash. If he pulls it off, it could make for an uncomfortable situation for Democratic leaders and centrist Democrats. Liberal activists are pushing for impeachment, while leaders worry such a move could turn off independent voters. They have made it clear that impeachment of Cheney or President Bush is off the table. Kucinich says he will offer a privileged resolution on Tuesday requiring House members to vote on what to do with the impeachment measure, which currently has 22 sponsors. But despite the strong resistance of the Democratic congressional leadership to the impeachment effort, Kucinich has pressed forward with it. In this he apparently has strong public support because an American Research Group poll indicates that “54% of American adults want the US House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings against Vice President Dick Cheney, including 76% of Democrats, 17% of Republicans, and 51% of Independents. The same poll found 46% of voters in favor of the same thing for President George W. Bush, including 69% of Democrats, 13% of Republicans, and 50% of independents.” In preparation for today's opening of the impeachment offensive Kucinich released the following statement: Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) will offer a privileged resolution on the House floor [today] that will bring articles of impeachment against the Vice President, Richard B. Cheney. Following the introduction of the privileged resolution, Kucinich will hold a news conference in 2456 Rayburn at 3 p.m. “The Vice President is cherry picking intelligence and selectively using facts in a manner that does not portray the complete picture,” Kucinich said. “The best option to prevent an unnecessary war with Iran is to impeach the Vice President, the lead cheerleader of the war. The Constitution gave Congress the power to impeach. Congress must use its power to restrain the Administration and impeach the Vice President before he prods the United States into another war.” On April 24, 2007, Kucinich introduced H. Res. 333, the Articles of Impeachment against the Vice President. The first two charges focus on the Vice President’s successful effort to mislead the Congress and American public into a war against Iraq. The last charge focuses upon the Vice President’s determination to again mislead the Congress and American public into a war, this one against Iran. “H. Res. 333 has been before the House of Representatives for half a year and has 21 cosponsors. At the same time, the Vice President has escalated his belligerence towards Iran. Thus, I believe it is now urgent to move the impeachment resolution,” Kucinich concluded. The 21 cosponsors of H. Res. 333 are: Rep. Let me cite from the articles of impeachment that were introduced this afternoon, Article I, that Richard Cheney had purposely manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States by fabricating a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction to justify the use of the United States armed forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security. That despite all evidence to the contrary, the vice president actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States about an alleged threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. That in this the vice president subverted the national security interests of the United States by setting the stage for the loss of more than 3,300 United States service members and the loss of 650,000 Iraqi citizens since the United States invasion; the loss of approximately $500 billion in war costs, which has increased our federal debt; the loss of military readiness within the United States armed services, through an overextension and lack of training and lack of equipment; and the loss of United States credibility in the world affairs and decades of likely blowback created by the invasion of Iraq. That with respect to Article II, that Richard Cheney manipulated the intelligence process to deceive the citizens and the Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida in order to justify the use of United States armed forces against the nation of Iraq in a manner damaging to our national security. And that, despite all evidence to the contrary, the vice president actively and systematically sought to deceive the citizens and Congress of the United States about an alleged relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida. That preceding to the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, the vice president was fully informed that no credible evidence existed of a working relationship between Iraq and Al Qaida, a fact articulated in several official documents. With respect to Article III, that in his conduct while vice president of the United States, Richard Cheney openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran, absent any real threat to the United States, and has done so with the United States's proven capability to carry out such threats, thus undermining the national security interests of the United States. That despite no evidence that Iran has the intention or the capability of attacking the United States, and despite the turmoil created by the United States's invasion of Iraq, the vice president has openly threatened aggression against Iran. Furthermore, I point out in the articles that Article VI of the United States Constitution states, and I quote, "This Constitution and the laws of the United States shall be made in pursuance thereof and all treaties made or which shall be made under the authority of the United States shall be the supreme law of the land. Any provision of an international treaty ratified by the United States becomes the law of the United States." The United States is signatory to the U.N. Charter, a treaty among the nations of the world. Article II, Section 4 of the United Nations Charter states, and I quote, "All members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state, or in any manner inconsistent with the purposes of the United Nations." The articles conclude by pointing out that the vice president's deception upon the citizens and the Congress of the United States that enabled the failed United States invasion of Iraq forcibly altered the rules of diplomacy so that the vice president recent belligerent actions toward Iran are destabilizing and counterproductive to the national security of the United States of America. There was no scheduled endtime for the meeting and ultimately the meeting lasted nearly 45 minutes. During this time many different aspects of the impeachment process were discussed. Representative Conyers was very generous with his time and made it very clear that he considers it very important for him to continue these conversations about impeachment. Unlike during his visit to Minneapolis, Rep. Conyers did not mention the matter of "time" as one of the factors against bringing forward H. Res 333. His most prominent rationale for not bringing forward the resolution was that he felt there wouldn't be support for the measure and subsequently that it wouldn't go anywhere. He spoke about all of the freshman Congresspeople who were elected in Red States and how they were unlikely to come out in favor of impeachment. He then stated that if he weren't in his position, he would be "one of you…lobbying for impeachment." I implored him to be one of us IN his position and to lobby his fellow Representatives in support of H. Res 333.

Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, 2 p.m. Kucinich has introduced H Res 333 as a privileged resolution.
Rep. Jose Serrano chaired the session. Congressman Kucinich introduced H Res 333 and read the three charges against Cheney contained therein. Serrano said that a time would be designated within the next two days for the bill to be considered. At that time, anything could happen, including a vote on the resolution, a vote on tabling the resolution, or sending the resolution to committee (potentially with a time limit for a response). Rep. Steny Hoyer has reportedly said he will move to table the resolution. We have somewhere between 10 mins and 48 hours to let our Congress Members know to vote No on tabling, Yes on impeachment.

Steny Hoyer (Democrat and House Majority Leader) Put forth an order to remove this vote entirely-It failed! Wake up America! The Democratic Leaders (Pelosi, Reid, Schumer, Clinton, Murtha, Obey, Feinstein) are killing this country, not the Republicans. The Democrats were elected to end the war and they are doing EVERYTHING in their power to expand it!
Now that the impeachment hearing has been approved, Conyers (Democrat and Chair of the Judiciary Committee) has already stated he feels these hearings are counterproductive (another traitor in the makeing!).
Hey Conyers, that ain't your f**king place to decide before hearing the evidence. The House voted fair and square and you HAVE TO CONDUCT THE F**KING HEARINGS!

By the way, Kucinich has been painted as a total kook because he said something about seeing an object he could not identify over 10 years ago. What he actually repeated over and over again during the debate is that Bush/Cheney need to be impeached ASAP to save this country from the Iran attack plan and end the Iraq war. The strange part of the whole procedure is the 165 of the 290 Republicans who were voting to table the resolution that decided to give the Kucinich and crew the opportunity to have a hearing on Impeachment. But as several people in here have rightly pointed out the Dems voted the resolution into a black bag committee that will disappear any open debate about the issues raised in the resolution. The top Dems in the House put a bunch of kitchen table issues foward in defense of their defense of high crimes and misdemeanors, i.e.... don't worry about the killers preying on humanity, help us set up a nanny state. Looking foward to DK's take on his fellow Dems.

US Constitution Article II. Sec. 1
..."In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President [or Vice President is the implication], and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected."
The House, I believe, can only investigate and hand the case over to the Senate for prosecution. The Senate has the power to Impeach, so they would have to appoint a new Vice Pres until a special or regular election could be held it seems. Not a Constitution law expert here though.

Both parties are absolutely phony. Here’s my rudimentary understanding of what happened today. Kucinich brought this impeachment resolution to the floor as we all know. The republicans initially voted against it just as expected. Once they realized though that the cowardly democrats didn’t have the will to support it (lacking enough votes), they quickly changed their votes to instead force it at the last minute to call their bluff. Now it’s destined to die in the Judiciary Committee.
The republicans are pure scum and the democrats are pure scum enablers. Hastings said that Kuinich has his own agenda and labeled him a UFO believer to marginalize him. Conyers claimed that this would be a diversion from real issues. HELLO! What issues, like Iraq! Well who brought us there you idiots?!?! It was Bush and Cheney, whom you refuse to remove from office. You can’t possibly solve the problem merely by dealing with the symptoms rather than the cause. 99% of the republicans want war and 99% of the democrats want war. It’s all just a big charade.
