Official: Madoff son found dead in NYC apartment

(AP) – 29 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — A law enforcement official tells The Associated Press that a son of Bernard Madoff has been found dead in New York City of an apparent suicide.

The official says Mark Madoff was found hanged in his Manhattan apartment.

A family member notified police around 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

The official spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't allowed to speak publicly about the case.

Mark Madoff and his brother, Andrew, were under investigation but hadn't faced any criminal charges in the massive Ponzi scheme that led to their father's jailing.

NEW YORK (AP) — One of Bernard Madoff's sons was found dead of an apparent suicide Saturday on the second anniversary of his father's arrest, according to a law enforcement official.

Mark Madoff, 46, was found hanged in his apartment in Manhattan's fashionable SoHo section, according to the official. A family member notified police around 7:30 a.m.

The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

Mark Madoff and his brother, Andrew, were under investigation but hadn't faced any criminal charges in the massive Ponzi scheme that led to their father's jailing.

Bernard Madoff swindled a long list of investors out of billions of dollars and is serving a 150-year prison term in North Carolina. He was arrested on Dec. 11, 2008, after confessing his crimes to his family.

Madoff's sons, according to the family's attorneys, were the ones who turned him in.

The scandal put a harsh light on members of the family. The financier's brother, Peter, played a prominent role in the family's company. Mark and Andrew Madoff both worked on a trading desk at the firm, on a side of the business that wasn't directly involved in the Ponzi scheme.

A year ago, the court-appointed trustee trying to unravel Madoff's financial affairs sued several relatives, including Peter, Mark and Andrew, accusing them of failing to detect the fraud while living lavish lifestyles financed with the family's ill-gotten fortune.

Hmm. Dog collar. Think it's a message? A "Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes" kind of message...
Maybe Bernie wasn't keeping his son on a short enough leash?

And what's up with this bs...

This guy wasn't facing jail time; seems that life was relatively unchanged for the sons. There's a missing motive here...

The US trustee representing the victims of Bernard Madoff, has filed a $19.6bn lawsuit accusing almost 60 people and institutions, including some of Italy and Austria’s largest banks, of participating in a decades-long “illegal scheme”.

The suit, the largest and most serious civil claim filed in the case, targets Bank Medici, the failed Austrian bank, Sonja Kohn, its former president, and Bank Austria and UniCredit, its partial owners, for allegedly participating in a “conspiracy” that sent money to Madoff.

Bernie Madoff’s son found dead in apparent suicide

NEW YORK, N.Y. Jailed financier Bernard Madoff’s eldest son was found dead of an apparent suicide Saturday on the second anniversary of his father’s arrest, according to police and a lawyer for the family.

Mark Madoff, 46, was found dead in his apartment in Manhattan’s fashionable SoHo district, according to police department spokesman Paul Browne. A relative notified police around 7:30 a.m.

“Mark Madoff took his own life today. This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy,” his lawyer, Martin Flumenbaum, said in a written statement.

His body was found hanging from a dog leash that had been fashioned into a noose and strung over a pipe in the ceiling of his living room, according to a law enforcement official. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

“Mark was an innocent victim of his father’s monstrous crime who succumbed to two years of unrelenting pressure from false accusations and innuendo. We are all deeply saddened by this shocking turn of events,” Flumenbaum said.

  This will be blanketed.
Hanging seems to have become a fad, the method of choice?
I may be wrong, but anytime one person is on the inside track, has the goods, knows the deal, he or she is at risk.
Yes, this one will be kept under raps and you can bet the home, apartment, office, has been visited by cleaners.....

Do medical examiners routinely perform some sort of ID check in suicide cases?  You know like fingerprints or DNA checks.
Is Mark now hanging out with Jim Morrison on some remote isle somewhere?  LOL!

Two years to the day, and almost the precise hour and minute, of his father's arrest by the FBI, Mark Madoff, son of the disgraced Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff.     In the article it says that he was able to hang himself by using his dog's leash, although the dog was not harmed.

New Madoff lawsuits seek $40bn

The trustee charged with recovering money for victims of Bernard Madoff has filed nearly 60 lawsuits seeking more than $40bn from dozens of banks, hedge funds and individuals in the past three weeks. The flood of litigation came as Irving Picard hit a deadline for seeking compensation on Saturday, the second anniversary of Mr Madoff’s 2008 arrest. The lawsuits represent the product of more than 1,100 subpoenas and two years of investigation by Mr Picard’s law firm.
