I just renewed a few days ago.  It was an exciting 8 hours.  I thoroughly enjoyed the long wait in the DOL office with the aroma of diapers and body odor.  I was so irritated by the $500 cost and waste of time to renew my license and tabs that I didn't bother thinking about much else.  I was especially fond of the woman at the counter when it was finally my turn.  She was on the phone with her son yelling at him, and missed the fact that I totally failed the vision test.  I am legally blind, but it doesn't seem to bother anyone there.  Imagine if I were a real "threat", it would probably go unnoticed just like my lack of vision.  I am reading the linked text right now.  Thanks for sharing.

your ability to see (legally or other) is no concern, so long as you can do as your told and pay that cash (500 eww), that license is yours (till decided otherwise)

Well isn't that special.  Their definition of "Secretary" for the purposes of this chapter is the secretary of DHS.  In other words, the TSA and Janet Napolitano have all authority over the requirements for states issuing drivers licenses.  That just makes me feel so much, hmmm, safer?  Is al qeada some kind of threat to our daily commute now?  What a joke.

      "(a) Participation of Secretary of Transportation and States. -
    All authority to issue regulations, set standards, and issue grants
    under this title shall be carried out by the Secretary, in
    consultation with the Secretary of Transportation and the States.
      "(b) Extensions of Deadlines. - The Secretary may grant to a
    State an extension of time to meet the requirements of section
    202(a)(1) if the State provides adequate justification for
    noncompliance."
