Billions of dollars allocated by the United States to the 7000 organizations dedicated to the reconstruction of Afghanistan are lost in a “labyrinth” that is impossible to know if the money is used wisely.

According to a report by the Inspector General for Afghanistan’s Reconstruction, Washington has spent “nearly $18 billion” between 2007 and 2009. The $18 billion was distributed between 7000 non-profit organizations and private companies, installed in Afghanistan which are working to rebuild the country. Since 2001 the US has sent over $55 billion in reconstruction to the country.

The Pentagon, State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, “are unable to say clearly how much money they spent on contracts dedicated to reconstruction activities in Afghanistan.”

“This audit is crucial, because if we do not know to whom we give money, it is virtually impossible to monitor the system as a whole,” said the Inspector General Arnold Fields.
