We were Americans before the "Declaration of Independence"?

Who is we in this case?  Is it true?  Yes there was some sense of identity among the people of English ancestry in America before the "declaration", but it was harldy shared by all the disparate groups Soetoro is referring to.  In short, this speech is all feel-good don't think bull$hit.

Personally, I don't know for certain that I have any ancestors in the U.S before independence.  Maybe, I'm not part of the we.
