I tried taking a pic of Orion last night only to discover regular digital cams can't photo the night sky,
Digital SLR cameras (DSLR) are ok though and some others.
Here's a fine starting point for Astrophotography :

A few popular DSLR’s for astrophotography include:

Canon Models- 5d, 10D, 20D, 20DA, 40D, 50D, 300D, 350D, 450D, 1000D
Nikon Models- D2x, D3, D40, D40x, D70, D80, D90, D200, D300

Sagittarius = Spirit, Capricorn = Love

Break ranks and go with your heart, don't go to work on monday, get a hobby and be independent.

'I have found an answer'

One of the island’s coves is that of Phorcys, the Old Man of the Sea, with its mouth between two projecting headlands: both are sheer cliffs to seaward, but slope down towards the harbour on the landward side. They restrain the huge breakers raised by strong winds outside, while oared ships can ride unmoored once they have reached their anchorage. A long-leafed olive tree grows at the head of the cove, and nearby is a pleasant, shadowy cave sacred to the Nymphs called Naiads. There are stone mixing-bowls and jars inside, where the bees have their hives. And there are great stone looms in the cave, on which the Nymphs weave wondrous purple fabrics, and also there are never-failing springs. The cave has two mouths, one facing the North Wind(CANCER) by which men enter, while the other facing the South Wind(CAPRICORN) is the immortal gods’ sacred portal that men do not use.

As we are approaching one of those cross-quarter days, Samhain, I can't help but think of the wheel of the year, the solar wheel, the wheel of Karma/Dharma.  A new beginning.  New years day.  Loss.  Sadness. The "tears of the world" -- the Pleiades -- soon just above the dawn horizon.

There will be no celebrating "Hallowe'en" here.  It is earlier -- closer to the Autumnal equinox that they pay their respects to the dead (ancestors) here.  They perform chesa rites at Chuseok when they visit their ancestors' tombs.  I will go to mass on All Hallow's and pray for the soul of my dead father (+).

And vistitations, return from the sidhe.  And peace.  These are things to think about as well.

Yes we are one people on earth, one brotherhood, only problem is now so much manipulation of the mind has taken place we got a huge job ahead of us turning the hearts and minds, the false bee-hive order of the border barriers have been set, skin color ethnicity has no meaning, the heart, the mind, and the spirit(attitude) count.

Astrological Ages

In addition to it's apparent annual journey around the celestial vault, the sun has another, much longer, cycle with regard to the zodiac. Because the earth 'wobbles' slightly on it's axis, the sun's position at the spring equinox changes from year to year with reference to the fixed stars. The movement does not amount to much - about one degree of arc in seventy two years - but it has given rise to the concept of the Great Year, a period of 25,920 years, the time taken for the equinioctial point to travel throughout the circle of the constellations.
Astronomically this phenomenon is known as the 'precession of the equinoxes' since the equinoctial point appears to go backwards through the constellations. Every 21,160 years (25,920 divided by 12) or so, the equinox moves from one constellation to another.
At present it's moving from Pisces into Aquarius; at the beginning of the Christian era it was moving from Aries into Pisces, and, at the time of Abraham, from Taurus into Aries.

"The Constellation Aquarius - The Water Bearer"

Pentax medium format camera w/55mm lens -
2 negatives "stacked" - photo (c) Bill and Sally Fletcher

The stars of the night sky have been divided and mapped since ancient times. With this mapping the imaginative shapes and legends of the constellations were created.

This photo of Aquarius shows, enlarged in their true color, the main "naked eye" stars that make up the shape of the constellation. The photograph also reveals deep space detail in this region of the sky including "The Helix Nebula" seen as a small red circle in the center of the photo near the trees.

A photographic technique was used that we call a "motion stop sequence" to get the long exposure of the constellation and a sharp exposure of the trees in the same photograph. Briefly, the camera must accurately track the movement of the stars across the sky over the hour long exposure to keep them from smearing on the film. Then a new exposure is taken with the tracking drive turned off to capture the "Earth scene" and keep it from smearing on the film. Then the two are merged together so the final photograph shows both components clearly as they looked to the observer in "real time".

With the right camera you can pick up the true colors of the stars, i'd like to recommend right now the monthly magazine 'Astronomy', here's their site :

[please note, when these folks say 'enlarged' they mean the photo took a long while to snap, as it gradually pics up the sky detail, the pic i took above of Orion took twelve secs, such detail the naked eye can't see (although the orange stars, like Betelgeuse- in the sky just now, top left star of Orion- does look kinda different for sure.)]

The Constellation Cygnus (Northern Cross) Decan to Aquarius)& Lyra(Decan to sagittarius)

This photo of the constellation Cygnus - also known as "The Northern Cross" - shows deep detail in this region of the sky, such as the star fields of the Milky Way, the reddish North American & Pelican Nebulae (named for their shapes), the Veil supernova remnant with its arcs of ejected material. At the same time it clearly shows the main "naked eye" stars that make up the shape of "the swan" or "Northern Cross" enlarged in their true color.

This is a natural photographic technique with the effect created during a single exposure of the film. In the corner of the photo is the constellation Lyra with its bright star Vega.

The Constellation Perseus, "The Hero"(Decan to Aquarius)

This photo of the constellation Perseus shows the main "naked eye" stars that make up the shape of "The Hero - Son of Zeus" - enlarged in their true color. It also reveals deep detail in this region of the sky including many deep space nebulae and star clusters. Perseus lies near the plane of The Milky Way which is responsible for the gentle glow of faint star clouds mixed with darker patches of accumulated dust and non-luminous gases.

This is a natural photographic technique with the various effects created during a single exposure of the film.

[We can return to the zodiac soon, we still got Aquarius and Pisces to cover, i been working and fighting off an throat infection lately, i'm enjoying the astronomical side of things right now though]

Best thing to do when its cloudy?

Double Cluster 869:

Hmmmm....

1) Research & Read: I love to research, so for me it's either reading something astronomy-related, or researching products and astro info on-line.  Your level of interest and the topic dictates how deep or involved you go, and the universe is your limit... Smile,Wink, & Grin.  I like the local library for a great first source for no-cost astronomy materials, and usually have several books on hand just to cover my various current topic interests when I can't get out under the stars.  [Currently reading Phil Harrington's "Astronomy For All Ages, and Touring the Universe Through Binoculars"]

2) Use Your Planetarium Software: You can really expand your general knowledge of the skies by playing around with any of the free downloadable planetarium programs (i.e. stellarium, etc.) , or the SkyDome on this sight.  That was a real boost to me in recognizing the skies the next time out.

3) Re-collimate your telescope.  (If you have one that requires that procedure.)

4) Start a project related to your equipement or accessory needs. (i.e. build a binocular stabilizing mount; construct your own foam-lined eyepiece case; hey, even start constructing a telescope... after researching all that's involved, of course.

5) Visit a local public night at an observatory (if it coincides with your cloudy nights)

I could go on, but those are just some of the things I've done to battle the cloudy skies.
Orion XT8 Classic Dob Nikon 10x50

TeleTaurus7:

Wow I could only think of reading and researching. I also like to play around with my scope. as in taking it off the mount and using it like a pirate cause its so small LOL.  Cheesy

Tonight the Pleiades was much closer(seven hours earlier than yesterday i was watching), please note, i got a d-slr camera with a sweet 55mm lens, BUT ...without a remote switch, long exposure pics (more than thirty secs) are impossible, long exposure astro pics pick up much more detail as well as the different colors.
God willing i'll have the remote soon but i'll continue with the thirty sec exposure for now, i gotta set the aperture better though(pics are too bright), it should be fine if i catch them when they're more close by.
Also i gotta look at noise reduction and taking 'RAW' photos, i'm a complete noob to photography.

Thanks for the shots of the Pleiades.  Good work.

Samhain (Nov. 2 originally not Oct. 31) is (curiuously?) also election day in the U.S. and the date of the next big Fed announcement maybe (or the 3rd).  Big cross-quarter day this year.

I think it is more than coincidence that this date is used for inceptions or programs, projects, movements etc.

This liminal time between the worlds of life and death.

Thanks CX, i've yet to catch it when it's up close, basically getting used to the cam right now, i should have the remote switch soon ...there are a couple pages on the web about making your own but the original isn't expensive, i can't wait for an long exposure pic ..., i wanna shoot Gemini and get a better shot of Aries, ...i'd love a long exposure of Taurus too. Grin
God willing i'll get back to the reading soon.

[Back to AstroLOGY]

The Fifth Dimension "Aquarius /Let The Sunshine In" (1969)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EegRh8Z4H-o

(THE MAN, lion ,ox and eagle.)

When the musical 'Hair' was first produced in 1968 the term 'The Age of Aquarius' entered popular consciousness for the first time, and people began singing about a supposed utopian future in which we would all take off our clothes, practise free love, and live in peace and harmony. Few understood the astrology behind it all. Even the writers of the musical had no real idea. The lines 'When the moon is in the seventh house / And Jupiter aligns with Mars' show astonishing astrological ignorance: Jupiter aligns with Mars frequently, and the moon is in the seventh house every day. And the rest of the stanza - 'Then peace will guide the planets, and love will steer the stars'- is more an expression of naive sixties optimism than a faithful account of esoteric tradition. If the writers had investigated this tradition they would have found that the 'dawning' of the Age of Aquarius would be anything but tranquil, harmonious and loving. As we shall see, one of the documents they could have consulted was Mark's Gospel.

And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Isaiah 2 vs 4

In Roman mythology, Janus is the god of gates, doors and doorways,
it's the sixth satellite of Saturn.

When Saturn rules Capricorn it deals with order and structure, in Aquarius, it deals with destruction, the two signs opposing these twin Saturn signs are Cancer and Leo, when the luminaries force the individual from the crowd, when the individual fire burns bright inside, Aquarius, on the other hand, dark, cold and wintry, ruled by Saturn deals with the collective, the group contribution, and can even force one to move in an exploratory path with complete objectivity in the matter to later share new-gained knowledge with the people. This is one of the ideas behind the 'water bearer', ...BUT you must first have something to bear, ...if you hope to share.

The water bearer is one who lives for others and is the embodiment of brotherhood and equality, sure the song from 69 deals with these topics but this inner change,(if we hope to change the world we must start with ourselves) is on a level so drastic that it cannot happen without turmoil, radically changing the focus of our lifes produces trauma.
Aquarius, the second last sign does not symbolize the end, but only an awareness of it and willingness to accept the pain that the end will involve,- we're talking about death of self here.

In modern astrology Uranus(in mythology, father of Saturn) is the ruler of Aquarius and although we've been disregarding the modern stuff it is believed that at certain times and from certain points Uranus is indeed visible to the naked eye, so with that said : Uranus deals with sudden and unexpected destruction, while Saturn deals with gradual erosion, being it the planet of death and decay.

The Second Coming
William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight; somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

The origin of the twelve glyphs is unknown, Aquarius is the fixed air sign, the air signs, especially this one being fixed, deal with ideas.
Saturn occupies the orbit farthest from the luminaries, which gives you an idea how particular planets were chosen to rule particular signs, being Capricorn & Aquarius winter signs.
The Saturn sign Capricorn deals with co-operation, between the multitude and their leaders, the micro vs macro, the Saturn sign Aquarius deals with co-operation between individuals. Politically speaking Capricorn = Patriarchal, Aquarius = Egalitarian.
In Capricorn Saturn represents structure & order, in Aquarius death & decay.

Judges 16 15-19
And she said unto him, How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me wherein thy great strength lieth.
And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death;
That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.
And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath showed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand.
And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him.

Samson comes from Hebrew word 'Shemesh' - SUN, Delilah comes from the Hebrew word 'Deliy' - WATER BUCKET.

Capricorn = Love, Aquarius = Change

"I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.""

"If everybody minded their own business, the world would go around a great deal faster than it does."

"No, no! The adventures first, explanations take such a dreadful time."

"If you set to work to believe everything, you will tire out the believing-muscles of your mind, and then you'll be so weak you won't be able to believe the simplest true things."

"Rule Forty-two. All persons more than a mile high to leave the court."

"I'm very brave generally,' he went on in a low voice: 'only today I happen to have a headache.'"

"The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo."

"Either it brings tears to their eyes, or else -"
"Or else what?" said Alice, for the Knight had made a sudden pause.
"Or else it doesn't, you know."

I now believe the sphinx in Egypt, is the Man & it's diametrical opposite, the Lion,
this makes much more sense than it being a Virgo-Leo combo.

[Lots still to cover in this section]

M'kay ...so ...Aquarius deals with change, Mark in the first part of his Aquarian section (ch 13) uses the Hebrew concept of 'The Day of The Lord', when peace would come, and so, backed up by Matthew as always giving clearer zodiacal motifs, Mark uses the idea of Armageddon(Matthew 24, Luke 21, Revelation & Daniel) described by Matthew as an Astrological Age, to inform of the point in the spiritual cycle called Aquarius.
Mark at time of writing himself would have been going into another age, and describes the end of the Arian age with the abomination(thought by scholars to be the roman standards in the temple precincts) and the eventual destruction of the temple, clarifying this idea in his statement that the people at that particular time would not pass till these things took place, which they did.
Mark also uses Aquarian images in his Armageddon chapter but Matthew gives a clearer picture.
