FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- British Petroleum is donating $1 million to the University of Alaska Fairbanks to catalog the papers from Ted Stevens' four-decade political career.

Stevens sent more than 4,500 boxes of documents to the university's library. Without the BP grant, the Rasmuson Library told The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner it would have taken decades to sort.

The library plans to hire additional staff to catalog and digitize materials. The library plans an online exhibit and electronic catalog.

Some of the other interesting points surrounding the disappearance include; Boggs was taken to the airport for the first leg of the trip by a young democrat named Bill Clinton who later, as President, appointed Congressman Boggs' wife, Lindy, to the position of US Ambassador to the Vatican after she served eighteen years in the Congress after her husband's disappearance.

Boggs also served on the Warren Commission that investigated the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Some web sites and conspiracy theorists have reported that Boggs wasn't happy with the commission's findings and was pushing for the investigation to be reopened at the time of his death.

However, according to his daughter Cokie Roberts, the nationally known television journalist, she told listeners to a talk radio show in April 2004 that her father had no problems with the commission's finding that he was not pushing for the investigation into the Kennedy assassination to be reopened. WASHINGTON -- The National Transportation Safety Board says it appears that five people were killed and four survived the Alaska crash of a small plane that was believed to be carrying former Sen. Ted Stevens and former NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe.

The fate of Stevens and O'Keefe was not known.

Ted Lopatkiewicz, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, told The Associated Press in Washington that reports from Alaska authorities were that nine people were aboard the aircraft and that "it appears that there are five fatalities."

He said the NTSB is sending at team to the crash site in southwest Alaska.

EADS Confirms O'Keefe On Plane That Crashed In Alaska

European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co. (EADSY, EAD.FR) confirmed the chief executive of its North American operations, Sean O'Keefe, was a passenger on a private aircraft that crashed in Alaska on Monday night.

"Local authorities are reporting that there are survivors and a rescue operation is under way," EADS wrote in statement on Tuesday.

EADS North America spokesman Guy Hicks said there were no other details at this time.

O'Keefe was among eight people believed to be on board a plane that crashed Monday night in a remote area about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage, according to various news reports. Former Sen. Ted Stevens (R., Alaska), the longest-serving Republican senator in history, was also reported to be on the plane.

I've read a lot about this this morning and in most places they said "bad weather" or "fog" etc. was hampering rescue.  I've been in the area and there are lakes everywhere as well as spongy tundra.  And it is very possible there was bad weather up there--even fog.  I saw no pictures of the plane. But I did read that five rescue people stayed the night with those who are alive while they wait for rescue.

It's possible but HAARP is located Northeast out of Gulkana and it is hundreds of miles East of Dillingham.

There is a huge conflict going on right now though between the Pebble Mine Company wanting to go in at the headwaters of where the wild salmon spawn out of Dillingham. The salmon commercial fisherman have been fighting this for several years now.  The plane crashed somewhere near where this mining company wants to go in.  I wonder if Stevens had something to do with this.

Recovery operations were underway by the Alaska National Guard. Initial reports said five of the nine aboard had died. The identities of the dead and survivors have not been released.

The rugged wilds of Alaska can be a very dangerous place to fly over in small planes, which many do. Stevens wife Ann, in fact, died in a 1978 crash that the senator survived.

Iconic social  commentator and comedian Will Rogers died in an Alaska plane crash in 1935, as did Louisiana Democrat Thomas Hale Boggs Sr., then the House Majority Leader.

The plane carrying Boggs, the father of longtime broadcast commentator Cokie Roberts, disappeared there in 1972 enroute from Anchorage to Juneau to a campaign fundraiser and was never found.

Boggs was declared legally dead in 1973, along with a fellow passenger Rep. Nick Begich. If that last name sounds familiar, it should. The deceased congressman was the father of Mark Begich, a Democratic former Anchorage mayor who now holds Stevens' Senate seat.

Boggs was succeeded in the House by his wife, Lindy, and also by speculation that his death somehow involved a conspiracy over aborting the investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Boggs was not a believer in the single bullet theory of the Warren Commission.
