I apologize in advance if this topic has been covered.

I have been attempting to burn Invisible Empire to dvd with Windows 7's Windows DVD Maker.  It completes the task but changes the widescreen aspect ratio of the video to 4:3.  The menu is in widescreen but the actual video is squashed horizontally to 4:3.  I don't understand why this is happening.  I am sure it is a windoze problem but it happens every time whether I change the option for 16:9 or leave it at 4:3.

Any advice?  Has it happened to anyone else?

There are many programs to use. The one suggested above is a good one. It depends on what your converting from and to.
VSO Convertx2DVD, DVDFab, are also good. Hanbrake is a fav of the freebies.

But for ease of use, ... I would suggest downloading the DVD5 or DVD9 iso of the respective film. Then you can just use a burning program like IMGburn, Nero, etc to burn the copy quick and painless.

Invisible Empire, w/menus and extras, DVD5 ISO

Thanks for all your advice.  Here is a solution that I found on another forum:

Quote
The solution for this is to import the .avi file into Windows Movie Maker and go into options and select 16:9 and either PAL or NTSC, after doing that save the project file.

Close Windows Movie Maker and then open up Windows DVD Maker and click on 'add files' then add the project file you saved in Windows Movie Maker. This will import the .avi file in 16:9 format.
