Gov. Schwarzenegger sends troops to fight drug trafficking at U.S.-Mexico border

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on Friday issued an order to send the state’s National Guard to support security efforts at the U.S.-Mexico border to fight drug trafficking.

Last month, Schwarzenegger applauded President Barack Obama’s proposal to deploy 1,200 National Guard personnel along the southwest border of the U.S, 224 of which to be deployed in California. The deployment is temporary and would be for up to one year in support of counternarcotics and border security operations.

“The military forces deployed in support of this request will not be employed in a direct law enforcement role,” the Governor ordered.

“The military personnel shall be armed for the purpose of self defense during the performance of their duties in support of this border enforcement effort. Any approved use of weapons shall be consistent with the California Military Department’s published rules for the use of force. To the extent that military weapons may be required, the military personnel shall deploy with issued military weapons,” he added.

The exact location of the troops was not disclosed but the operation is scheduled to last until June 30, 2011.
