Group hopes blimp lifts Paul's bid
Airship to promote GOP hopeful’s presidential campaign

A grass-roots organization backing Republican Congressman Ron Paul's bid for president says this airship, shown here Monday tethered outside Airship Management Services' hangar in Weeksville, will be used to promote Paul's campaign. The blimp will be flown over New Hampshire and other early primary states, ronpaulblimp.com says

One of the largest blimps in the world will be launched in Weeksville on Monday promoting Republican Ron Paul’s presidential bid.

The blimp tour supporting the Texas congressman’s presidential campaign is slated to formally kick off next week out of Airship Management Services’ office in Weeksville.

Ronpaulblimp.com states that the inaugural launch of the ship is slated for 8 a.m.

It will cost Paul supporters $350,000 a month to lease the blimp from AMS, a Connecticut-based company with a satellite location in Weeksville, where blimps are stored and maintained. Company president George Spyrou said this is the first time a presidential campaign has been promoted on a blimp.

Spyrou said the blimp has been used in previous advertising campaigns including Pepsi, Fuji film and Ameriquest mortgage services. A company sister ship was flown over the Olympic games in Athens in 2004.

Spyrou said that Paul supporters have the blimp reserved on a month-to-month basis, and could be leased out up to a year, if necessary.

“Ron Paul supporters seem to be from a very enthusiastic part of the world,” Spyrou said.

The blimp is 200 feet long with a volume of 240,000 cubic feet.

“The cabin part is the largest in America,” he said. “The balloon part is the same size as the Goodyear blimp.”

Paul’s supporters have been soliciting contributions to sponsor the aerial campaign. Their web page, ronpaulblimp.com, states that $51,875 has been collected as of 2:33 p.m. on Monday.

Some of the sponsorship terms include flight benefits.

For instance, for a $5,000 sponsorship, donors can travel on the “Ron Paul Blimp Tour” for three to five days, the page states. Organizers are asking for amounts between $25, for 2.7 minutes of sponsorship, to $1 million for 10 weeks of sponsorships.

The Web page tells supporters that they can “buy as much blimp (sponsorship time) as you want without having it count toward your current campaign contributions.”

Officials from Paul’s campaign office and his congressional office said they had nothing to do with the Ron Paul Blimp movement.

However, the blimp will promote Paul’s presidential bid in several ways.

Decals are going to be stuck on the side of the blimp. One design is slated to read: “Who is Ron Paul? Google Ron Paul.” Supporters are tagging the other side as the “Love revolution,” and it reads Ron Paul R”evol”ution.

The blimp will be flying over the northeast and critical primary states. Key dates include:

Dec. 12, a flyover over Wall Street is planned.

Dec. 14, tea will be dumped from the blimp into the Boston Harbor.

Dec. 15, a New Hampshire and Boston flyover is planned.

“Why is the blimp spending so much time in New Hampshire during the election season? That is where the cameras are,” the Web page reads.

Note: Weeksville is just south of Elizabeth City, and is home of the US Naval Air Station, Weeksville, which is Blimp central for the US military. - S  Wink

From the Daily Paul tonight (Tuesday):

The San Francisco Straw Poll was canceled tonight because there were too
many Ron Paul supporters. I arrived at 7:00 for dinner, speeches by
representatives of each candidate and then a straw poll.

Unfortunately, at around 9:45pm when the straw poll was about to take
place, Gail Neira of the SF Republican Alliance, announced that she was
canceling the straw poll because it was unfair. She was referring to the
approximately 40 Ron Paul supporters that were standing in the back of
the room with Ron Paul signs. She went on to say that she was
overwhelmed by the number of Ron Paul supporters that showed up, but by
that time the crowd was in an uproar.

I was outraged and so was everyone else. It was very difficult to hold
back the emotions and remain calm. I can only imagine what will happen
in the primaries, when too many Ron Paul supporters show up. Will they
just cancel the elections?

To be accurate, the dinner was $33 and Gail allowed people who didn't
want to eat or couldn't make it in time for dinner to pay $5 to
participate in the straw poll later in the evening. This wasn't really
the issue, since most of the people that showed up would have paid the
$33 and said so, when she used money as an excuse.

The event was caught on film and there will be a YouTube video soon.
It's great to be a part of the Ron Paul R[EVOL]UTION.

Here is video of the fracas that insued...

Thar she blows!    Grin

Poster annyab at Ron Paul Forums posted: I just saw the Ron Paul blimp here in NC
It wasn't fitted with the banner or anything, but the blimp hanger people knew what I meant by Ron Paul blimp I have video of it being pre-flighted and I am trying to upload it, but the internet here is being SOO slow. As soon as its up you'll be able to see it!
BTW - it's huge and really cool!
here's the vid!

Note: This video is very noisy! It sounds like an engine test, so you may want to mute your speakers, since there is no dialog or music anyway.

Taken from reddit: "Ron Paul Blimp May Not Happen. 80% Of The Pledges Were "From Bogus Supporters Trying To Discredit The Campaign""
Thursday, December 06, 2007 - http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=52281

Ron Paul Blimp Project Pleads for Funds
A plea has gone up on a website dedicated to the rental of a blimp to promote the presidential hopes of limited-government candidate Ron Paul (R-Tex).

The site can be seen here: RonPaulBlimp.com

The statement reads:

"We must receive $200,000 in sponsorships by midnight on Friday for the blimp to be in Boston by December 15th! Please sponsor the Ron Paul Blimp Tour now!"

As of the morning of December 6th, the site stated it had received $119,775 in donations plus $5,500 in wire transfer purchases. While $125,000 is fairly substantial, at least another $75,000 must be raised if the private project is to meet its goals.

This is a far cry from the $400,000 plus that had supposedly been pledged for the blimp, much of which has not yet been collected and is thought now to be questionable at best.

There are even Internet reports that the project come under sustained attack by those wishing to inflate the totals with an eye toward damaging its credibility. Some of the e-mails addresses reveal derogatory sentiments, according to sources, but it was presumed several days ago that the majority of pledges were sound.

Your quote has no attribution. Got a link?

I don't worry about the pledges. Dirty tricks are running wild now that the campaigns are all in over drive. That's to be expected.

A lot of what I see on other forums is panic from people who are involved in a campaign for the first time. Trust me, I'm an old political war horse with decades of doing this, it will get a lot worse.

It's the donations, like the final vote counts, that are the key. Will there be rigging? You bet. That's why we have to overwhelm them with our numbers.

Hang on, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!  Smiley

Thanks. I see it was posted by some fellow named Flemlord199.

The original article did not say "Ron Paul Blimp May Not Happen. 80% Of The Pledges Were "From Bogus Supporters Trying To Discredit The Campaign". That was a headline written by the person who posted the story. It looks like a deliberate attempt to smear the Ron Paul campaign.

I read some of  Flemlord199's posts in other threads. Not sure about him, but it's clear that the net is crawling with trolls, disinfo agents, agents provocateurs, naysayers, and general idiots.  Beware. It's a jungle out there.   Wink  Tongue

Ron Paul blimp charts unprecedented course

Politico
By: Kenneth P. Vogel
Dec 6, 2007 05:36 PM EST
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1207/7245.html

Look!

Up in the sky: It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s ... Ron Paul?

If a whimsical publicity stunt goes as planned, a blimp hyping the long-shot Republican presidential campaign of the Texas congressman will launch next week. The Ron Paul blimp is set to fly from North Carolina, over Washington, New York and Boston, before heading to New Hampshire, where the Jan. 8 primary offers the iconic libertarian perhaps his best chance of translating his zealous Internet support into votes. Like the unprecedented online fundraising behind Paul’s bid, the blimp effort, which appears on pace financially, isn’t affiliated with the official campaign and pushes traditional political conventions.  And that’s not just because it likely would be the first blimp to be turned into a flying billboard for a White House hopeful. It also tests the reach of campaign finance rules by employing an innovative funding structure that could expose a new way to pour largely unregulated money into politics. If the model is successful, hypothetically it could allow a media consultant to produce slick attack ads and — without ever disclosing how much was raised or spent — solicit millions from “sponsors” to air the ads in key states. “It’s much more than just Ron Paul’s campaign,” said Jerry Collette, a former California Libertarian Party official who’s managing the effort. “It’s a whole new way of presenting opportunities to individual people to be able to participate in elections in a way they’ve never really done before.”

Indeed, though Collette and other principals are Paul supporters, the outside lawyer retained by blimp backers is former Federal Election Commission chairman Brad Smith, who is advising former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney’s rival bid for the GOP nomination. Smith is among the leading opponents of campaign finance laws, and the blimp plan offers common cause on that front with Paul’s anti-regulation supporters, as well as an opportunity to set potentially far-reaching FEC precedent. As for the plan itself, it’s an unabashed plea for attention for Paul’s campaign. The website boosting it envisions it this way: “The mainstream media is mesmerized as the image of the Ron Paul blimp is shown to tens of millions of Americans throughout the day. ... The local television stations broadcast its every move. ... The PR stunt generates millions upon millions of dollars worth in free publicity, and captures the imagination of America.” Though the annals of American politics are flush with examples of all manners of props and stunts, it’s tough to find other blimps. “We’re not doing a blimp because traditional political wisdom maybe doesn’t say that that’s the best way to spend money,” said Paul campaign spokesman Jesse Benton. “But who knows? It could turn out that the blimp is the best thing that anyone’s done.”

As for the money floating the blimp, Collette and Smith have developed a detailed business plan carefully structured to avoid Byzantine campaign finance laws. They shunned traditional mechanisms such as creating an independent non-profit group under section 527 of the IRS code — like Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and the other groups that spent millions on ads in 2004 — or a political action committee — like EMILY’s List. Instead, they went an almost unheard of route, establishing a for-profit company: Liberty Political Advertising. The name is a nod to Paul’s ideology and the website boasts the “legal arrangement offers the best of both worlds: no limits and virtually no regulations.” In other words, very libertarian. Instead of soliciting donations like a PAC or a campaign or a non-profit political group, Liberty says it’s “selling political advertisements that you can sponsor.” By Friday evening, Liberty had pulled in nearly $150,000. Each payment will fund a portion of the $350,000-a-month blimp rental fee and associated costs ($10 pays for 1-minute’s worth of advertising on the blimp, while $1 million buys 10 weeks, according to the website). The plan also calls for a spotlight truck, remote-controlled blimps trailing the main blimp and paid support staff, as well as the 10-seat blimp, which measures 190-feet long and 60-feet high and until recently was leased to the U.S. Navy.

It’s set to launch Monday from Elizabeth City, N.C. Provided it gets the requisite government clearance, it’ll fly over favorite Paul rhetorical targets like the Federal Reserve and the IRS, as well as the center of the free market — Wall Street, before an event at Boston Harbor on Dec. 16. That’s the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party and the day Paul’s supporters plan to contribute $10 million to his campaign.  A website planning that so-called “money bomb” has solicited more than $2.5 million in pledges, while the blimp website says its crew will “dump tea into [the] harbor” from the blimp. Asked how that would jibe with littering laws, Collette, Liberty’s managing partner, said he didn’t see a problem. “It’s not like we’re going to dump tons of it — just enough to be symbolic,” he said. “It’s a natural ingredient. It’s not going to pollute the harbor.”

The blimp itself will be affixed with banners asking “Who is Ron Paul” and will urge people to “Google Ron Paul.” The other side will feature the distinctive “Ron Paul Love Revolution” logo gracing countless pro-Paul web forums and blogs. “We specifically left off any reference to an election, because most people do not care about politics,” the effort’s website explains. “We want to bring them back into the electoral process, and messages like the ones chosen — distinctly different than the same old boring way of advertising candidates — will do that.” Those messages might have been off limits had blimp backers raised money for the effort using a 527, since those groups can’t explicitly support or oppose campaigns. Likewise, had blimp backers registered with the FEC as a political action committee, they would have had to report how they raised and spent almost every dime. And they would have been barred from accepting contributions of more than $5,000-a-year from any individual. Things could get a little tricky, though, since payments of more than $250 to fund the blimp likely will be considered “independent expenditures” that require detailed FEC disclosure reports from Liberty’s customers.

That’s something that might offend the libertarian sensibilities of some Paul supporters. But Collette said his company intends to make it painless to comply. It will automatically produce independent expenditure forms for customers to print, sign and mail, which Collette predicted they’d do because “word has gotten out that this is going to bury the FEC in paperwork for the cost of stamp.” He said the goal is to make a profit, then market similar services to supporters of other candidates. “It ain’t nothing like a PAC,” he said. “This is a business.”

Grim Lyman Fights on to Save Ron Paul Blimp

Thursday, December 06, 2007
http://www.freemarketnews.com/WorldNews.asp?nid=52289

An "almost broke" Trevor Lyman has sunk his modest life's savings into promoting the limited-government, presidential campaign of Ron Paul (R-Tex) and moved to New Hampshire as well. Ironically, he may soon have to quit helping to market Ron Paul and the candidate's ideas if the Ron Paul blimp project doesn't get funded, according to sources who know him personally. The effort needs a good-sized injection of cash by tomorrow or is in danger of not launching.

These sources say that while Lyman is an entrepreneur and talented marketer, his passion in the last year has been to help Ron Paul and the candidate’s free-market vision. Those who have interpreted his efforts as being part of a bigger commercial effort may have misread his intention and even the reason the blimp site was set up as it was. The for-profit element was a way to defuse questions about campaign finance. Lyman had little or no part in the specific strategy, though, as has been reported here, he has taken the brunt of some backlash.

Through innovative "mass donation days," Lyman has helped raise perhaps $5 million for the limited government presidential campaign of Ron Paul (R-Tex) and the next fund-raising effort - on December 16th - with which he is identified will likely raise at least a similar amount.

But now sources portray Lyman as grimly fighting on to make the Ron Paul blimp a reality. There are deadlines, and there are also delays. Sources close to Lyman said that several fund-raising efforts including "5 for Freedom" have been stymied by PayPal which shuts down accounts when too much funding arrives too quickly.

The site can be seen here: www.ronpaulblimp.com

Lyman's "Google" facility - on the blimp site - does work but may take several tries, and not everyone who wants to donate is persistent. A credit card facility is still in the works. Another way to pay is by wire. Those who have not redeemed their pledges should likely do so soon.

The blimp effort needs cash fast. It seemed to have raised over $400,000 but those who oppose Ron Paul may have made false pledges in an effort to derail the Ron Paul blimp project. It may even have been a concerted campaign, of some sort, some sources speculate. Funds must be returned if the blimp doesn't fly – and this is another reason why Lyman and others have not touched a penny to date. An important, free-market fund-raising opportunity may soon be lost, sources say.

ABC NEWS

Supporters Pump Ron Paul Full of Hot Air
A 'Ron Paul Blimp' Readies for Take Off

BY Z. BYRON WOLF - Dec. 7, 2007
http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/Story?id=3965657&page=1

Somewhere in an enormous hangar in North Carolina, enormous decals are being stuck to an enormous blimp. "Who is Ron Paul? Google Ron Paul," the 240,000-cubic-foot zeppelin will read on one side and "Ron Paul Revolution" on the other when it launches from Elizabeth City, N.C., Monday and begins its slow, 300-mile-per-day float up the Eastern Seaboard to Boston. People in their cars and on park benches, going about their daily lives, are bound to say something like, "What the heck is that blimp doing up there? Who the heck is Ron Paul?" And that's pretty much the idea. For all his recent buzz, Paul remains unknown to most Americans and his libertarian scruples, which set him apart in the Republican Party as the only GOP presidential hopeful against the Iraq War, also make him a stranger to Democrats, many of whom embrace his anti-war stance, but dislike his views on issues like abortion.

Paul's 08 Bid Takes Flight
With any luck, the dirigible will be in the Washington, D.C., skyline sometime in the afternoon on Monday, although there could be some airspace issues in the greater Washington area. The plan is to have it floating over Boston Harbor by the weekend of Dec. 15, where Paul supporters will reenact the Boston Tea Party and hold a large rally at Faneuil Hall. His online supporters have a fundraising effort, which coincides with the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. For more on that, check out Teaparty.com. http://teaparty07.com/ If nothing else, the blimp will be unique as a campaign tool and could get the Texas congressman some free attention in the "mainstream media" as his supporters like to call it. Hiring a blimp at great expense and without any campaign coordination seems like it would be a first in the annals of American elections. But there are no records to be found on such things.

Launching an Independent Campaign
Like many of the more successful ventures of Paul's presidential campaign, the blimp has nothing to do directly with Ron Paul the candidate. The tea party rally, for instance, has some of the same organizers as the blimp enterprise. While Paul may go to Boston, neither he nor his campaign are helping plan the event. But they will benefit from the millions that will likely be raised that day, just two weeks before the Iowa caucuses and three weeks before the New Hampshire primary, where Paul is considered to have his best shot. As campaigners, Paul's disparate and spirited supporters, though political novices, have shown themselves to be both creative in pushing their candidate and adroit in finding ways around both the traditional media and campaign finance laws.

A Former Election Commissioner Adds His Two Cents
For instance, supporters do not "contribute" money to a Political Action Committee. To fund the dirigible, they "buy" into a for-profit corporation called Liberty Political Advertising LLC. With the help of former federal election commissioner Brad Smith, the organizers are confident the arrangement "offers the best of both worlds, no limits and virtually no regulations." Of course, there is the possibility that each of the more than 100,000 donators to the blimp enterprise could be required to file their own federal declaration form. So far, the more than 100,000 supporters buying into the blimp have given anywhere from $25 to $5,000, according to Bryce Henderson, the media coordinator for Liberty Political Advertising, based in Simi Valley, Calif. Individuals are limited by law to giving $2,300 to the Paul campaign, although it is fast approaching its goal of $12 million in fundraising between October and the end of the year. Achieving that goal will have more to do with the independent grass-roots efforts than with the Paul campaign.

Supporters Galvanize Around a Platform
Paul's supporters come from varied backgrounds and are sprinkled around the country, connected only by cell phones and high-speed Internet access. Most have never met each other in person or even seen Paul speak, but they have created a remarkable network of Web sites and e-mail lists committed to fundraising for and around their candidate. "We also wanted to ensure that supporters who would have otherwise donated once, would feel compelled to donate again and again, thus increasing the overall funding for the campaign," said Eric Nordstrom, the active duty service member posted in England who created RonPaulMoneyBomb.com. "Our entire goal was to form a Web site that would provide a funnel, which lead directly to Ron Paul's donation page. We are just average Joes trying to cast the largest $100, let alone the maximum allowable contribution to make, but they would have $25." The official Paul campaign is mounting a more traditional effort with television and radio advertising as well as phone calls to voters in early primary states. The campaign's next TV ad, which was shot over Thanksgiving at Paul's home, will not even mention his Libertarian streak. It will focus on his personality and his family.

An Idea Takes Flight
Only last month, the Ron Paul blimp was just an idea being floated among supporters in e-mails and on blogs. But with the success on Nov. 5 of a one-day, Internet-driven fundraising drive pegged nominally to Guy Fawkes day and the old nursery rhyme "Remember, remember the 5th of November," novel ideas began to seem more possible. Trevor Lyman, an online music promoter based in Florida who had set up the Web site ThisNovember5th.com started working with some other fans of the blimp idea in Colorado, California and elsewhere around the country. They launched RonPaulBlimp.com and have been selling stakes in the leased blimp. He said he's confident the blimp violates no campaign financing rules even as it obviously sidesteps them, but said "it could be contested down the road." Campaign finance experts not affiliated with the effort agree. "Given the way this came about, what they are doing and their stated goal, it is very possible they will still be considered a political committee. For one thing, they are going to have to show that this is truly a business," said Lawrence Noble, a former general counsel for the Federal Election Commission now in private practice. "It's almost too good to be true to have a client pop up as quickly as they have and just say do it," said George Spyrou, who owns Airship Management Services, the company Paul's supporters have contracted with. "Frankly we didn't treat it that seriously until very recently," said Spyrou in a phone interview last week. "But it seems to be genuine." Spyrou did not want to start prepping the airship until he was relatively sure the Paul supporters could come up with all the money. "It's quite an expensive beast to feed and water," he said. And Lyman and his supporters do not yet have all the money they will need. But they have raised more than $150,000 and hope to be raise more than $400,000 soon. That would keep the blimp airborne through the Iowa caucuses, even if the blimp never makes it there. After flying to Boston, it will head over to New Hampshire and stay in that early primary state until weather forces it down. "Weather permitting" is a big, unknown variable whenever one is dealing with an airship, according to Spyrou. "If we have snow or strong winds we would rather not fly. Say anything above 15 or 20 miles an hour, we would rather not fly," he said. Even if it is forced down in New Hampshire, the blimp will be moved south to warmer weather and the important primaries in Florida and South Carolina until supporters run out of money. At that point, many of the early primaries will be over and it will be evident whether or not Paul and his candidacy have run out of air.

You know, the headline writers just cannot resist taking shots at the first presidential candidate in a decade with any integrity.

Yes, headline writers employ dishonest tactics. They proclaim things that are not contained in the article, and they plant their little digs, and slights in the headlines that betray their agenda. Usually headline writers are editors, and not the same people who write the articles. It's enough to make Hearst dance in his grave.

Then they try to be cute. I hate cute headlines. Blat!
