Hello all,
Over the past days the streets of Toronto turned into a battle field where countless people experienced unjustified police violence, arbitrary searches, prolonged and unlawful detentions, poor conditions in detention centres, and other breaches of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms .
Although many people have been released 44 are in the Finch system going through bail hearings while many more remain trapped in cages, in horrendous conditions, some still unaware of the charges laid against them.
*JAIL SOLIDARITY NEEDED*
The detention center on Eastern Avenue has been emptied and everyone has now been transfered to Milton (**address!**) and there is a dire need for people to go out there in a jail solidarity movement to welcome the folks being released.
*HEALING AND LEGAL CONSULTATION*
Tonight (530pm) at Christie Pits Park (on west side of the park at Bloor St. ) there will be a Healing and Legal Consultation. Come share your experience with one another and with lawyers that want to help us effectively record our stories and collect our statements. We will also have medics and healers present to help us overcome the emotional and physical abuse we've experienced. Some food will be served on site.
It is really really important that we don't let this go away. If Canadians show passivity towards everything that happened, then we will no doubt face this same brutality again, and again. And let's not forget that this type of police brutality has always existed in our city, but in racist and discriminatory ways. During the G20, we saw this brutality experience on a much broader level.
It was inspiring to see over 1500 people marching in the street today, in a protest against police abuse of power. Many had not taken part in demonstrations over the weekend but were outraged by the police's behavior. The oppression is not working, it is encouraging people to stand up!
Harper has proposed that the G20 continue to be hosted in Toronto. He also congratulated the police force for a fantastic job of keeping the streets safe. Will we let him have the last word?
If you have any questions, please call Dave at 647 968 4619 or Taylor at 416-820-6007.
If you would like to offer help as a healer, facilitator, lawyer, or anything else please call Dave or simply come out to the park!
Everyone welcomed!
