Catholic coloring book warns US kids of pedophile priests

New York's Roman Catholic Church is trying a novel approach to alert children to the danger of being sexually assaulted by a priest, with an abuse-themed coloring book, officials said Tuesday.

"Being Friends, Being Safe, Being Catholic," was distributed earlier this year to several hundred schools in the New York area as part of the church's Safe Environment Program, a spokeswoman from the city's Archdiocese said.

One image in the book features a guardian angel hovering over an altar boy with a priest lurking in the background.

"For safety's sake, a child and an adult shouldn't be alone in a closed room together," the angel counsels. In another, the angel warns of a sexual predator attempting to chat with a child over the Internet.

David Clohessy, head of the Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests, cautiously welcomed the initiative, but said it did not go far enough.

"We applaud the intent but worry a bit about the approach... it does still feel like almost every step taken by the hierarchy is one that's been prompted by external pressure," he told AFP.

The scale of child abuse by priests remained hidden in the United States for years until the Archbishop of Boston confessed in 2002 to protecting a priest he knew had sexually abused young members of his church.

According to the group "Bishop Accountability," some 3,000 priests out of the 42,000 across the country have since been denounced, some of whom have been investigated and convicted.

Since the scandal broke, US Catholic authorities have paid out close to 2.8 billion dollars in damages, forcing many dioceses to sell off their assets.

filed a sexual abuse lawsuit against a teacher and preist who worked at a
Delaware high school. "Pat Kenney, who wrestled under the name Simon
Diamond, used a landmark Delaware Law, the Child Victims Act, to come
forward and tell his story of childhood sexual abuse at Wilmington's
Salesianum High School, where he says he was sexually molested by known
predator Denis Killion," reads a press release issued by Kenney's attorney.

"Pat has a goal," said his attorney, J. Michael Reck of Manly & Stewart of
New York and Newport Beach, CA. "He wants to make sure that what happened to
him never happens to another child. Pat spent an entire career being strong
and ignoring the effects of his abuse. Now, he realizes that the best work
he can do will be to keep kids safe, urge them to report abuse, and hold
abusers and their protectors accountable."

Powell's POV: The press release notes that the man Kenney accuses of
molesting him was eventually removed from ministry when four men came
forward to accuse him of absue in August. There are also letters that expose
that church officials knew that Killion was a molester, but instead of
removing him, they simply moved him to schools in Pennsylvania and Florida.

I think it takes a tremendous amount of courage for Kenney to share his
story publicly. He could have kept his involvement in the lawsuit quiet, but
it appears he's going to being speaking out about it. Kenney has always come
across as very well spoken and articulate in interviews with the wrestling
media and I'm sure he'll be an excellent spokesman as he attempts to raise
awareness for this particular issue.

oh my gosh that is so sick.  This is what the novus ordo has come to.  Making children think that priests are evil wicked men who are going to harm them.  Just more proof that the Novus Ordo is not Catholic, and that those priests who were responsible for the abuse and the cover up are also not Catholic and not validly ordained.  Thank you Vatican II and the infiltrators in the Catholic church for the damage you have done, but be warned that you will not win this fight.  You will not destroy the church no matter how hard you try!  You may serve the devil, but the devil himself is beneath God Almighty and the devil will be defeated!

The Church before 1958, vehemently opposed impurity. These occurrences were rare across the board 100 years ago, in every single religion.

It's only increased lately because we all know, (hopefully by now) that the vatican has been taken over by people who would destroy it and create a "pseudo church" as Bella Dodd so aptly described after she repented of what she'd done. If you don't know, look her up. There is plenty of information on her.

To exaggerate and say that "they finally are doing something about it after 2000 years," is very ignorant.

I just think it's great how quickly the church acknowledged and reacted to this problem. Many religious institutions throughout history have simply ignored stuff like this.

Before Father Malachi Martin died, he was working on a book with a timely title, "Primacy: How the Institutionalized Roman Catholic Church Became a Creature of the New World Order." He died in 1999 under extremely suspicious circumstances.

I think at the end of his life, he came to the realization that the last 5 popes have been pretenders. I know that for a while he was an advisor to them, so in this time of confusion, you have to understand that some of his positions may have been incorrect. Saints have disagreed on who the pope was when there was confusion, and this time is no different than those times. History repeats, as we've seen in secular, and Church history.

It is said he believed in Garabandal apparitions, but I am uncertain of them. As far as doctrinal matters, (with the exception of the pope issue,) I would have to agree with him. As far as I know, he didn't accept "vatican II" either. He said the true Mass, and not the forgery of a "mess" in the "pseudo-church." He was unaware of the "two sister lucys" debacle also, as was evident in his interview with Art Bell. The priest at my Church knew him personally, and Father Martin stayed in the US because of the encouragement of the priest at my Church. He lived in Manhattan.

Not at all, i find the guy was great, i have a couple of his books. I was just curious as your co-host said he was a bad person and not to be trusted after she said he was the perfect person to go to on the Jesuits. no worries, just wondered what you thought of him.
