EAGAR, Ariz. — A small plane nosedived into a high school in a small eastern Arizona town Friday afternoon and exploded, killing both people aboard, authorities said.

There were no reports of injuries on the ground. Classes are out for the summer at the school, authorities said.

The Cessna circled the area two or three times before it suddenly crashed into the main building at Round Valley High School in Eagar at about 2 p.m., Apache County sheriff's Sgt. Richard Guinn said.

Show Low Fire Department spokesman Eric Neitzel said two people aboard the plane were confirmed dead but their names and hometowns were not immediately available.

There was no immediate word on who owned the plane and where it was headed. But Neitzel said witnesses told authorities the Cessna took off from nearby Springerville Airport and experienced some sort of malfunction while it circled before veering into the school building.

Two hours after the crash, flames were still erupting 20 to 30 feet above the roof of the two-story school.

National Transportation Safety Board officials were expected at the crash scene Saturday morning to handle the investigation, according to Neitzel.

Fire crews from nearly a dozen small towns in the region raced to battle the flames. Officials evacuated homes in neighborhoods east and north of the school.

The school serves about 500 students in Eagar and nearby Springerville and is about 200 miles east of Phoenix. The blaze was contained to the main school building.

There was no indication that anyone was inside the school when the plane crashed.

Dean Martin's office tells KGUN9 News he left the high school just moments before the plane crashed into the main building.  He was at the school for a forest tour.

A small plane carrying two people crashed into a high school and caught fire in the central-eastern Arizona community of Eagar Friday afternoon just after State Treasurer Dean Martin and volunteers had just left the building.

Officials believe the plane was a Piper Cherokee leaving Springerville Municipal Airport, some 3 miles away from Round Valley High School at 550 South Butler Street, said Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

911 dispatchers received reports of "loud bang" noises and a plane crashing and catching fire, authorities said. The crash and fire apparently destroyed the bulk of the classrooms and administrative offices, Sgt. Richard Guinn, a spokesman for the Apache County Sheriff's Office, said.

Residents within a quarter-mile radius of the school were evacuated due to heavy black smoke, said Amanda Reidhead, a spokeswoman for White Mountain Regional Medical Center.

The school was out for summer break but a large political meeting was scheduled to be held in the high school Friday night, said Mark Sanders, spokesman for J.D. Hayworth's senatorial campaign.

State Treasurer Dean Martin was at the high school just minutes before the plane crashed into it, preparing for a tour of the forest with Citizens for Multiple Land Use and Access. Along with Martin were Sen. Carolyn Allen, former Sen. Rusty Bowers and several others who met around 1:15 p.m.

Several adults and children were inside the auditorium helping set up for the meeting that was planned for 6 p.m. Hayworth was also supposed to speak. The volunteers were in a closed off area away from the crash site, and no one was injured.

"We literally left the building about a minute before the plane went into the building," Martin said. "We were about a city block away when we saw it in the rear view mirror."

He saw the flames erupt into a "huge fire ball."

"We started getting frantic phone calls from people who knew we were there to see if we were still alive," Martin said.

Wind and a full load of fuel inside the plane were probably factors that made it more difficult to extinguish the fire, according to Sgt. Guinn.

The fire was put out at 6:30 p.m., Guinn said.

Many homes in the neighborhood lost power after officials requested it be turned off, Guinn added. Authorities had the power turned off because so much water was being dumped on the fire.

Details on the condition of the pilot and the possible passenger were not immediately known.

National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) spokesman Joshua Cawthra said earlier that investigators were prevented from getting to the plane inside the building while fire crews fought hot spots that continued to burn reported ABC15.

Fire crews from nearly a dozen small towns in the region raced to battle the flames. Officials evacuated homes in neighborhoods east and north of the school.
School superintendent Travis Udall told ABC15 a meeting was planned for tonight where they will start talking about how to open in the fall without the building that was destroyed. He said there was no damage to the school's auditorium but the library sustained heavy smoke and water damage.

NTSB plans to remove the wreckage from the school Sunday morning and then try to determine what caused the plane to crash. The investigation could last up to a year before they make a decision on what could have caused the crash.

A small plane that crashed into an empty Arizona school on its way to the Grand Canyon, killing all four aboard, was registered to a Wesley Chapel man, authorities said Sunday.

The single-engine Piper aircraft that crashed Friday was registered to Jeffrey J. Ulrich of Winged Elm Drive in Pasco County, according to Federal Aviation Administration records.

Officials would not say whether Ulrich or any members of his family were aboard the plane, but a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed the plane's registration.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the plane to nose-dive into the main building at Round Valley High School about 2 p.m. Friday in the small town of Eagar, which is about 200 miles east of Phoenix.

The plane circled the area two or three times before it suddenly crashed and exploded.

There were no reports of injuries on the ground.

The plane had just taken off from the nearby Springerville Airport when the crash happened.

Earlier in the day, the plane had stopped in Wichita Falls, Texas, said NTSB investigator Joshua Cawthra. He was unsure of its stops before that.

By Saturday, four bodies had been removed from the wreckage, said Richard Guinn, a sergeant with the Apache County Sheriff's Office. The remains were sent to the county medical examiner's office.

On Sunday afternoon, federal investigators had removed the plane's wreckage and transported it to a site in Phoenix where it will be reconstructed so investigators can determine the cause of the crash, Guinn said.

The NTSB hoped to conclude its onsite investigation by Sunday afternoon and will post a preliminary report on the crash on its website by the end of the week, Guinn said.

The NTSB has determined that the plane was a Piper single-engine aircraft with six seats, Guinn said.

Investigators are examining flight plans and weather conditions at the time of the crash and will look at the plane's control systems.

"They're working on recovering all of the wreckage, documenting where all the pieces are and the debris path," he said.

Hours after the crash on Friday, flames were still erupting above the school building. Fire crews from nearly a dozen small towns in the region raced to battle the flames. Officials evacuated homes in neighborhoods east and north of the school.

Classes at the school are out for the summer, and Guinn said no teachers or staff were on the grounds because they work a four-day week during the break.

State treasurer's newborn son dies days after mom's death

Three days after his wife died after giving birth, state Treasurer Dean Martin announced his newborn son, Austin Michael Martin, had died as well.

"Last night, Austin was reunited with his mother, Kerry," a tearful Martin said in a news conference at Phoenix Children's Hospital, where Austin was brought by helicopter late Monday.

The treasurer emphasized that the circumstances leading to his wife's death were extraordinary, saying that most expectant mothers should not be overly concerned about their own pregnancies.

"I know many expectant mothers are probably very worried right now. I know Kerry would have been," Martin said. "But I want you to know that the events that led to Kerry's death were rare, and Kerry would not want you to worry.

"Hug your family," he added, "and cherish the miracle of life."

In 2007, eight women in the state died of so-called maternal causes.

Nationally, about 600 women die during childbirth each year, although recent reports have suggested that those numbers may be increasing.
