55 Bodies Dumped in Abandoned Mexican Silver Mine

http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/americas/55-Bodies-Dumped-in-Abandoned-Mexican-Silver-Mine-95856524.html

Members of the rescue team during the rescue of bodies founded in an abandoned silver mine at the Taxco Community, in Guerrero State, Mexico, 07 Jun 2010

Officials say at least 55 bodies have now been recovered in southern Mexico from an abandoned silver mine that became a dumping ground for apparent victims of the country's lethal drug wars.

The attorney-general for the southern state of Guerrero, Albertico Guinto, said the search for bodies concluded Saturday night. He said the mass grave may be the largest ever unearthed in Mexico.

Authorities discovered the site in late May, about 100 meters deep in the mine, near Taxco, a colonial-era tourist attraction famous for its silver jewelry. The bodies apparently had been dumped over a long period of time in an airshaft near the entrance.

Most of the victims have yet to be identified, but prosecutors say one of the bodies was a kidnapped state prison warden.

Guerrero has recently been plagued by drug violence among rival gangs.

Mexico's drug cartels, which have been battling for turf for years, frequently use mass graves to bury their enemies.

On Sunday, police reported the discovery of six decapitated men in the northern state of Durango.

An estimated 23,000 people have died in drug-related violence in Mexico since President Calderon took office in 2006 and began cracking down on the cartels.

With a figure like that I wonder if he claims success in that fight? Then he has the nerve to come to America and demand that we should all turn our guns in to the govt. Clean up the garbage in your own backyard Calderon before you tell us how to run ours. Just a thought.  Wink

the violence here is reaching the proportions of a horror movie, just this past weekend, 6 or 8 persons were executed near Cancun and their hearts were removed from them, being alive yet, like in an aztec sacrifice, one of the victims was a minor. It is known that the narcos, drug gang members, offer human sacrifices to their saints. I remember a tv documentary, where it was presented the case of an young american that was sacrificed some 15 or 20 years ago, he had just crossed the border to have some drinks with his friends but going back, over the international bridge his friends left him behind inadvertently, they were walking, and he was abducted, his skull and vertebral column were recoverd months later after the police killed the leader of the drug gang Los Narcosatanicos, and excavated in his ranch looking for his victims. This drug lord liked to keep the skull and vertebral columns like trophies.

Returning to the bodies in the abandoned mine, I read that the police expects to identify one of the bodies as the body of a cuban-american expert in tactics anti-kidnappings who was kidnapped while offering a talk here in Mexico (he was abducted while he was giving the talk).

Avoid Mexico for a long while, just yesterday night there was a shooting in the local mall that it is some 6 blocks away from me (it's an elegant mall with boutiques and expensive restaurants), I spent several minutes looking at the police and news helicopters with their searching lights; and the mayor and the police chief of the neighboring municipality survived an aggression, they were going to be executed, yesterday night too. And also a female federal agent was executed yesterday, Mexico City and the metropolitan area had been spared of the violence so far but it isn't so anymore. But our "great leader" Felipe Calderon has abandoned everything and travelled to Sudafrica to assist to the opening match of the Soccer World Cup.

Your input on matters south of our border is always appreciated Carlos. I would agree avoiding Mexico at all cost is necessary at this point in time. To much to risk and uncertainty surround trips there. I use to spend my spring breaks in South Padre and we would spend two days in Del Rio normally. Now I could not even imagine making the choice to travel there. Mexico is becoming more like a nation at war with its self every day. Its citizens are being killed by the cartels and the government; giving them no where to hide from the violence. The future for all of the world is in dire straits. It will not be long until we see a total breakdown of Mexico's society in my opinion, and the USA is not far behind.

The site seems to be dumping ground for the cartels. Read Carlos' post about one of the men believed to be dumped in the site. It would not surprise me if these were people in opposition to the cartels.

Four of 55 bodies ID'd in Mexican mine

http://www.upi.com/Top_News/International/2010/06/09/Four-of-55-bodies-IDd-in-Mexican-mine/UPI-55011276119322/

TAXCO, Mexico, June 9 (UPI) -- Mexican officials have identified four of the 55 bodies found in an abandoned silver mine apparently used as a dumping ground by a drug gang.

Only four of the victims have been identified since the first bodies were found in May, The Christian Science Monitor reports. One of those is the warden of the jail in nearby Taxco.

Investigators began looking for bodies in the Concha mine in the state of Guerrero after getting a tip from an arrested suspect. They found 24 bodies near the entrance and a total of 55 after the deep shaft of the mine was explored.

Guerrero Attorney General Albertico Guinto said the bodies appeared to have been dumped over a period of time.

Officials fear the discovery will do more harm to the tourist trade in Taxco, a town formerly known for its many shops selling silver jewelry. Guerrero, far from the U.S. border, has become familiar with drug violence, especially in the coastal resort of Acapulco.

Hi RabidSheep,

I appreciate you because you always have kind words towards me, thanks. Sad but true, avoid Mexico. On Monday the newspaper Milenio published a note about a report by an international organization that mentions that the index of deaths in Mexico is the same than that of a country at a state of war.

about the dangers of visiting Mexico, for example this note from september 2009:
(the link is in spanish)

http://www.cronica.com.mx/nota.php?id_nota=460150

Gordon Douglas & Jeffry Ronald, they were executed, someone rang their bell telling them that the flats of their 3 vehicles were punctured. A mexican female friend declared that Jeffry Donald was the bodyguard of Gordon Douglas.

Let's hope that things start to improve soon and that the USA never reaches a stage like the one we are living in.

Best Regards,
Carlos
