(Cyprus, May 31, 2010) At 11:00 pm Cyprus time and in international waters off the coast of Israel, the boats were contacted by the Israeli navy. “Who are you and where are you going?” Our reply was that we were part of a flotilla and we were going to Gaza to deliver humanitarian supplies. On the radar, the boats could see three Israeli war ships shadowing us, and 15 minutes later, a silent aircraft hovered over the flotilla. One of our Hebrew speakers had found Israel’s strategy and posted it to us. It stated, “You will be boarded by highly trained, very efficient and very SILENT commandos. They will use silent inflatable boats to get to our boats and both try to board our boats directly from the inflatables and by dropping divers into the water to climb onto the boats,” so people were preparing for them to come up and over the sides of the ships. Our SPOT locator has sent out several HELP messages at www.witnessgaza.com. Lubna Marsawa, Free Gaza’s organizer on the Turkish passenger boat said in outrage, “Very few times in history has a flotilla delivering humanitarian goods been welcomed by military war ships.” This is a call to the world from the people on the boats. “We are a civilian people doing what our governments have refused to do, challenge Israel’s right to collectively punish 1.5 million Palestinians in Gaza by blockading their right to their own sea. This flotilla is bringing construction and educational supplies the people of Gaza and are being met by Israeli warships.” Check out this site, find the Israeli embassy nearest you and let them know how you feel.

The Telegraph saying that more boats are to follow Monday in "a second wave."

Israeli troops attack ship carrying aid to Gaza
Israeli warships have attacked at least one of the six ships carrying pro-Palestinian activists and aid for blockaded Gaza, killing at least two people and wounding 30, according to reports.

Published: 5:13AM BST 31 May 2010

The al-Jazeera satellite channel reported by telephone from the Turkish ship leading the flotilla that Israeli navy forces fired at the ship and boarded it, wounding the captain. The Turkish NTV network also reported an Israeli takeover with gunfire, and at least two people were killed.

The al-Jazeera broadcast ended with a voice shouting in Hebrew, "Everybody shut up!"

Separate reports said that Israeli commandos descended from helicopters onto the boat.

The television network said two activists had been killed and some 50 wounded. Organisers of the aid convoy said they were no longer in contact with the boats. The Israeli military have refused to comment.

The reports came just after daybreak, with the flotilla still well away from the Gaza shore. Israel had declared it would not allow the ships to reach Gaza.

In Turkey, news of the interception prompted protestors to attempt to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul in retaliation.

On Sunday, Huwaida Arraf, one of the organisers, said the six-ship flotilla began the journey from international waters off the coast of Cyprus on Sunday afternoon after two days of delays. She said they expected to reach Gaza, about 250 miles away, on Monday afternoon, and that two more ships would follow in "a second wave."

The flotilla was "fully prepared for the different scenarios" that might arise, and organizers were hopeful that Israeli authorities would "do what's right" and not stop the convoy, she said.

"We fully intend to go to Gaza regardless of any intimidation or threats of violence against us," she said. "They are going to have to forcefully stop us."

After nightfall Sunday, three Israeli navy missile boats left their base in Haifa, steaming out to sea to confront the activists' ships.

Two hours later, Israel Radio broadcast a recording of one of the missile boats warning the flotilla not to approach Gaza.

"If you ignore this order and enter the blockaded area, the Israeli navy will be forced to take all the necessary measures in order to enforce this blockade," the radio message continued.

The al-Jazeera satellite channel reported that the ships changed course to try to avoid a nighttime confrontation, preferring a daylight showdown for better publicity.

The flotilla, which includes three cargo ships and three passenger ships, is trying to draw attention to Israel's three-year blockade of the Gaza Strip. The boats are carrying items that Israel bars from reaching Gaza, like cement and other building materials. The activists said they also were carrying hundreds of electric-powered wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers.

Israeli forces have attacked the international aid convoy Freedom Flotilla en route to the besieged Gaza Strip, killing at least 10 people and leaving more than 50 injured.

The attack came on Monday morning after one of the six ships in the convoy was hit by Israeli navy forces before being stormed by commandos descending from helicopters.

The interception reportedly took place in international waters, more than 150km (90 miles) off the coast of Gaza.

Israel had earlier deployed warships and threatened to stop the flotilla from reaching the Palestinian territory where the war-ravaged residents were impatiently eying the arrival of the aid convoy.

Israeli navy forces and helicopters have taken over the ships in the humanitarian aid convoy and are using force against those on board, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Israeli soldiers have also reportedly detained activists accompanying the convoy.

In Gaza, Palestine's democratically elected Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh strongly condemned the attack on the flotilla and called on the international community to protect the aid mission.

The convoy carries 10,000 tons of supplies and hundreds of politicians, activists and journalists.

The flotilla was seeking to break Israel's crippling blockade of Gaza and deliver basic necessities to the impoverished Palestinians in the coastal enclave.

I think this one got stormed.  A wee bit bigger than the one McKinney was on.

http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/middle-east/Aid-Convoy-Heads-for-Blockaded-Gaza-95241414.html
A six-ship flotilla carrying more than 600 pro-Palestinian activists and 10,000 tons of supplies is heading for the Gaza Strip as the Israeli navy prepares to intercept it.

Three Israeli naval missile boats left their base in Haifa late Sunday to prevent the ships from entering a 32-kilometer exclusion zone enforced by Israel along Gaza's Mediterranean Sea coast.

Turkish NTV, a private television station, reported early Monday that eyewitness say Israeli helicopter gunships fired on one of the vessels in international waters, killing two and wounding 30.  The report has not been confirmed, and Israel has yet to comment on the report.

Earlier, an Israeli official said the navy warned the convoy by radio not to approach Gaza, told the captains of the boats they were approaching a blockaded area and asked them to either proceed to the Israeli port of Ashdod or turn back.

Activists on board responded that they would continue toward their destination.  The al-Jazeera satellite channel reported the flotilla changed course and slowed down in an attempt to avoid a nighttime confrontation.

Israeli authorities say that while they want to minimize violence, the navy will intercept the ships once they enter Israel's territorial waters.

The flotilla will then be towed to Ashdod, where the foreign nationals aboard will be brought to a detention center and given a choice of deportation or jail if they refuse to be deported voluntarily.

Israeli government spokesman Yigal Palmor says aid supplies will be confiscated and examined before possibly being transferred to Gaza.

Organizers from the Free Gaza Movement and a Turkish human rights group say the convoy, which includes three cargo ships and three passenger boats, is carrying medical supplies as well as cement and other building materials.

They say the construction supplies are intended to help Gazans rebuild homes destroyed during Israel's military offensive in the Islamist-controlled territory early last year.

Flotilla organizer Greta Berlin says its aim is to break Israel's three-year blockade of Gaza, which was instituted after the Palestinian militant group Hamas seized control of the territory in 2007.

Israel says it has banned construction materials, including concrete and steel, from entering Gaza due to security concerns.  U.N. officials and international aid groups say the blockade has devastated the local economy and failed to weaken Hamas's grip on power.

Activists have rejected an Israeli offer to unload their humanitarian aid at a port in Israel, for transfer to Gaza via international organizations.

The protesters on board the ships, including human-rights workers and lawmakers from several European countries, say they hope to broadcast any confrontation with Israeli forces live on television and via the Internet.

They say two additional ships could follow later this week.

The ships, which departed Mediterranean ports in Europe and Turkey over the past week, set sail for Gaza Sunday from international waters off the coast of Cyprus after two days of delays.

I have scooped a number of articles from Rivero's site.
He is speculating that this could be war between Israel and Turkey which would naturally escalate into a broader conflict.  He also has a number of articles discussing how these two countries arent the best of friends to begin with.

This rather pro Israeli press release from Russia Today is saying up to 16.  It also says that the IDF are towing 1 to 3 boats to Haifa, not Ashdod like they have been saying for a couple days.  Cunning Israelis.

Up to 16 people have been killed and about 30 injured after Israeli boats allegedly attacked a flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip
reports Al Jazeera referring to the Israeli Army radio.
Yahoo StumbleUpon Google Live Technorati
del.icio.us Digg Reddit Mixx Propeller

Early Monday morning the Israeli navy intercepted the fleet of ships about hundred kilometers off the coast of Gaza. They sent out warning signals for the ships to turn round. A detention center has been established in the southern Israeli city of Ashdod to hold those activists who refuse to turn back. Israeli forces insist that they want to check the cargo aboard.

According to latest reports, from 1 to 3 vessels of the international flotilla are being towed to the Israeli port of Haifa, not Ashdod as was suggested earlier, so as to avoid encountering international journalists who are waiting at Ashdod.

Turkey: 2 dead in Israeli attack on Gaza air ships

TIA GOLDENBERG
Associated Press
Sunday, May 30, 2010, 11:08:35 PM PDT

OFF THE MEDITERRANEAN COAST—Israeli commandos on Monday stormed six ships carrying hundreds of pro-Palestinian activists on an aid mission to the blockaded Gaza Strip, setting off fierce battles in which at least two people were killed and dozens were wounded, according to the Turkish government.

There were conflicting accounts of what happened.

The al-Jazeera satellite channel reported by telephone from the Turkish ship leading the flotilla that Israeli navy forces fired at the ship and boarded it, wounding the captain. Turkey's NTV channel also reported an Israeli takeover in which gunfire was used.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry, citing "preliminary information," said at least two people were killed and more than 30 wounded. NTV, which had a reporter on board one of the ships, also said two were killed.

But Israeli security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity under military guidelines, said activists attacked the Israeli forces with knives and iron rods as they boarded the boats.

They said an unspecified number of activists and 15 Israeli troops were among the wounded.

"The people on the boats were very, very violent toward the soldiers," said Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich.

NTV showed activists beating one Israeli soldier with sticks as he rappelled from a helicopter onto one of the boats.

A Turkish website showed video of pandemonium on board one of the ships, with activists in orange life jackets running around as some tried to help an activist apparently unconscious on the deck. The site also showed video of an Israeli helicopter flying overhead and Israeli warships nearby.

"These savages are killing people here, please help," a Turkish television reporter said.

The al-Jazeera broadcast ended with a voice shouting in Hebrew, "Everybody shut up!"

There were no details on the identities of the casualties, or on the conditions of some of the more prominent people on board, including a Nobel peace laureate and an elderly Holocaust survivor.

Satellite phones on board the ships were turned off, and communication with a small group of reporters embedded with the Israeli military was blocked.

In Turkey, which had unofficially supported the aid mission, news of the attack sparked violent protests.

Police blocked dozens of stone-throwing protesters who tried to storm the Israeli consulate in Istanbul. The CNN-Turk and NTV televisions showed dozens of angry protesters scuffling with Turkish police and shouting, "Damn Israel."

The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the Israeli raid and said it was summoning the Israeli ambassador for an "urgent explanation." It says Israel violated international law and will suffer consequences.

The Israeli military denied its forces attacked the boats, saying soldiers were under orders only to use fire if their lives were in danger.

Some 700 pro-Palestinian activists were on the boats, including 1976 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland, European legislators and Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein, 85.

The flotilla, which includes three cargo ships and three passenger ships, is trying to draw attention to Israel's blockade of Gaza, home to 1.5 million Palestinians. The boats are carrying items that Israel bars from reaching Gaza, like cement and other building materials. The activists said they also were carrying hundreds of electric-powered wheelchairs, prefabricated homes and water purifiers.

The head of the Gaza Hamas government, Ismail Haniyeh, condemned the "brutal" Israeli attack.

"We call on the secretary-general of the U.N., Ban Ki-moon, to shoulder his responsibilities to protect the safety of the solidarity groups who were on board these ships and to secure their way to Gaza," Haniyeh told The Associated Press.

The reports came just after daybreak, with the flotilla still well away from the Gaza shore. Israel had declared it would not allow the ships to reach Gaza.

The violent takeover threatened to deal yet another blow to Israel's international image, already tarnished by war crimes accusations in Gaza and its three-year-old blockade of the impoverished Palestinian territory.

The flotilla began the journey from international waters off the coast of the east Mediterranean island of Cyprus on Sunday afternoon after two days of delays.

After nightfall Sunday, three Israeli navy missile boats left their base in Haifa, steaming out to sea to confront the ships.

This is the ninth time that the Free Gaza movement, an international group of pro-Palestinian activists, has tried to ship in humanitarian aid to Gaza since August 2008.

Israel has let ships through five times, but has blocked them from entering Gaza waters since a three-week military offensive against Gaza's Hamas rulers in January 2009.

The latest flotilla was the largest to date.

Israel and Egypt imposed the blockade on Gaza after Hamas militants violently seized control of the seaside territory in June 2007.

Israel says the measures are needed to prevent Hamas, which has fired thousands of rockets at Israel, from building up its arsenal. But U.N. officials and international aid groups say the blockade has been counterproductive, failing to weaken the Islamic militant group while devastating the local economy.

Israel rejects claims of a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying it allows more than enough food and medicine into the territory. The Israelis also point to the bustling smuggling industry along Gaza's southern border with Egypt, which has managed to bring consumer goods, gasoline and livestock into the seaside strip.

So much for my pessismism about MSM coverage of this:

Telegraph

AP

Sky News

LA Times

Someone else posted an NYT story.

That's not a lot of coverage mind you. I'm sure there'll be more though.

They have to give it some ink given the fact that the alternate media's going to make this story go mega. They either get left behind and look biased or do their jobs and report on it even if it hurts.

Oh and did I mention BOYCOTT ISRAEL!

Up to 16 people have been killed when Israeli naval commandos boarded aid ships bound for the Gaza Strip, meeting resistance from pro-Palestinian activists, Israel's Channel 10 television said.

The six-ship convoy carrying aid for Palestinians and led by a Turkish vessel with 600 people on board set sail for Gaza from international waters off Cyprus on Sunday in defiance of an Israeli-led blockade of the territory.

There was no immediate comment from Israel, where public radio quoted an unnamed Arab journalist aboard a ship as saying the navy intercepted the activists and that shooting was heard.

Vice premier Silvan Shalom told Israel Radio that Israeli forces would issue a report soon.

"As far as we know IDF (Israeli military) commandos descended on the boat from helicopters and took it over," said Mary Hughes Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Free Gaza Movement, which was behind the convoy.

An Israeli religious medical service, ZAKA, said seven people had been admitted to hospital in Haifa, Israel's main naval base, one of them in a serious condition.

Turkey says it has "strongly protested" against Israel's military action.

"[The interception on the convoy] is unacceptable ... Israel will have to endure the consequences of this behaviour," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

It said Ankara had called Israel's ambassador to the ministry.

Israeli officials said overnight the navy told the activists by radio to turn back toward Cyprus or head for the Israeli port of Ashdod to unload the 10,000 tonnes of aid, which Israel would then transfer to the Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip.

The convoy set off in international waters off Cyprus on Sunday in defiance of an Israeli-led blockade of Gaza.

The flotilla was organised by pro-Palestinian groups and a Turkish human rights organisation.

Turkey had urged Israel to allow it safe passage and said the 10,000 tonnes of aid was humanitarian.

Israel had said it would prevent the convoy from reaching Gaza.

Egypt and Israel tightened a blockade on Gaza after Hamas took over the territory in 2007.

Israel launched a devastating military offensive in Gaza in December 2008 with the aim of halting daily rocket fire towards its cities.

Most of the 1.5 million Palestinians living in Gaza rely on aid, blaming Israel for imposing restrictions on the amount and type of goods it allows into the territory.

The United Nations and Western powers have urged Israel to ease its restrictions to prevent a humanitarian crisis. They have been urging Israel to let in concrete and steel to allow for post-war reconstruction.

Israel denies there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, saying food, medicine and medical equipment are allowed in regularly.

It says the restrictions are necessary to prevent weapons and materials that could be used to make them from reaching Hamas.

Israeli army: More than 10 killed on Gaza flotilla

Associated Press
Monday, May 31, 2010

JERUSALEM – The Israeli military says more than 10 pro-Palestinian activists have been killed after attacking naval commandos who were halting an aid flotilla heading toward the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The army says the soldiers were attacked with knives and clubs as they boarded the six vessels Monday.

It says the violence turned deadly after one of the activists grabbed a weapon from one of the commandos. The weapon discharged, though it wasn't clear whether the activist fired it or if it went off accidentally.

The army says dozens of people were wounded, both soldiers and activists.

Israeli Arab groups say a prominent activist is among the wounded.

Israeli police say they have heightened security around the country.

I have scooped a number of articles from Rivero's site.
He is speculating that this could be war between Israel and Turkey which would naturally escalate into a broader conflict.  He also has a number of articles discussing how these two countries arent the best of friends to begin with.
Yes, but think about Sibel's allegations and the relationship between Turkish and Israeli corruption of the U.S. political system and the relationship up until quite recently of these two countries.  Of course, there is no love lost now, particularly as many in Turkey are questioning secularism and re-discovering their ties to the Islamic world.  Before that, though these two countries were two peas in a pod, and perhaps often in cahoots.

I just think it's a little more complex, but I hope you're right.  I hope more countries begin to hold Israel's feet to the fire for the things it does.

There's practically no way to boycott Israel since they get all of their funding from the US and Germany and don't provide the world anything but misery in return.  Undecided

Yeah I had thought about Sibel's allegations about the criminal links between the countries.  Maybe the whole thing is engineered.  Really killing 16 humanitarians in INTERNATIONAL waters is ballsy even for the Zionists -- So I am thinking no accident and that a response is anticipated and many counter actions have been planned.
These subs being dispatched is not a coincidence.

My thoughts also.  The first thing I thought about was Sibels charge about the tentacles of the Turkish government reaching deep into the US gov't.  On top of that, we all know Israel is also deeply entrenched in our government as well.
I am starting to believe that borders only exist on maps and in the minds of the uninformed.  TPTB rove across a borderless terrain.

And the spin is already frenzied.

Militants Aboard Flotilla Open Fire on IDF Soldiers

The IDF reports that the crew of the Gaza-bound flotilla lay in wait for the IDF to board their vessel and then attacked IDF soldiers. One crew member reportedly snatched a gun from an IDF soldier and then opened fire on the troops. One soldier was stabbed in the stomach with a sharp object. The soldier is in moderate condition and was transferred for medical treatment by helicopter to Rambam Hospital in Haifa. Doctors there determined he would require surgery. Two other soldiers were also wounded and were transferred to Tel Hashomer hospital.

At least 20 people were killed in the takeover of the Gaza aid convoy, a Press TV correspondent reported, saying that more than 50 people were also wounded in the attack.

At this rate the thread title will have to be constantly modified.
