Confrontation with racist Census worker...

Well the census Nazis came back. This time it was two of them. One was the same woman that came here the last time they wanted me to surrender information and a one arm 40ish balding racist white man.

I was tending to my livestock in the rear of my property when I heard my dogs barking and were very excited. My wife and children were in the house so I rushed to the front to see what was going on. When I turned the corner of the house I saw two census workers standing there. With a smile I spoke to the lady who was here before and asked "I thought I gave you all the info I am legally bound to give you the last time?". When I said that the one arm guy yelled at me on my property saying "We need to know if you are here legally if not we need to call INS." (I am hispanic but I am a US citizen and proud to be an American) He continued on saying "The constitution says you have to answer our questions". To which I answered very angrily "I know what the constitution says and by law I am not bound to answer your little survey, further more you are not going to yell at me on my property and as of right now you are trespassing on private property." I told them both to leave immediately. The bald one arm racist continued on saying he was going to have US marshals on my doorstep if I did not answer their questions. I yelled back by saying "Go ahead you bring your marshals down here". I went inside and slammed the door in their face. Not knowing what to expect next I went for my self defense instrument and put it near by. I did not know what these people would do next.

I told my wife to keep the weapon nearby while I went outside to chase them off. Not wanting any further problems I agreed to talk to he lady who had been here before, and told them I would talk to her but that the one arm racist had to get off my property immediately. I proceeded to let her know how many people lived here name and age but no more than that. I told her "I know by law I am not obligated to give you any more information than what I just provided to you." She said it was not a problem and left. The one arm bald racist was in his car still on the road by my driveway. I told him since you refuse to leave give me your name and your supervisor's name. He immediately covered up his badge and refused to give me his name. I have caught a glimpse of it and told him is your name and proceeded to repeat his name. He said that, that indeed was his name.

After calming down a bit I called the local census office where I spoke to a supervisor and explained what happened. She took down my name and phone number and assured me that he would be dealt with. Of course I have no idea if they really will do anything at all. all this happened about 3 hours ago.

I simply do not see why the first words out of his mouth was that he need to know if I was here legally when I obviously spoke to the idiot with perfect english, (in fact my spanish is real bad). The only reasons this idiot would assume I was illegal is:

1. He has been getting caught up in the whole Arizona thing
or
2. He was simply a bigoted prick

By the tone of voice and the way he was talking down to me I say it's number 2.

Needless to say my wife is nervous about the whole incident and is concerned about what this idiot might do in retaliation if any. We live in the country and safety is a concern when you live so far out of any city or town. Should I be concerned?

One more note... I regret not being able to record the entire incident on video. I think it would have made a very interesting viral video.

In retrospect I should not have provided any information to people who I had just been arguing with, anger got the better of me I should not have opened my big mouth further and should have just let them send out another minion.

indeed. if you are confident about the law and your rights, its your responsibility to politely say "no thanks" and ask them to leave. when we act confrontational, the situation only escalates. The agent has the freedom to throw a fit. and you have the freedom to keep yer cool.

The problem started when he started yelling at me saying he was going to call immigration on me. I don't particularly like being treated as some second rate citizen. That infuriated me, this prick was on my property, 100 feet into my property to be exact yelling at me calling me illegal and talking down to me. My kids were watching from the window as this guy yelled at me, my testosterone took over and I yelled at him to get off my land immediately.

When he said he was going to call the marshal, you should of said "no your not, Because I am calling him right now, to remover two trespassers". Then ask them for their names and ID so that you can sue them later for harassment and trespassing. That should get the message across.

I wouldn't worry much.  Sounds like the guys was on a power-trip.  Good thing he wasn't wearing a badge and had a gun.  Of course he would be a perfect candidate for the police force. 

You did the right thing--you stood up for your rights!

I have dodged two visits already.  I simply just do not answer the door.  If they catch me off-guard, I will stand up for my rights as well.

hey man, you can believe that census worker was just some jerkoff who was overly dedicated to his job, or you can believe he was your enemy. Those are your choices, not "theirs". If you believed he was just doin his job wrong, then you actually had a wonderful opportunity to inform/educate him about how the census works. But ya blew it. Instead, it sounds like you decided him as your enemy and squared off with him.

both yall might be taking the little piece of paper called "the census" a lil too seriously. lol!! I'm sorry if you're disappointed that i'm not impressed with the story about how you lost your cool and started yelling at a census worker in front of your children. if you started this thread in an attempt to find vindication for your actions, you wont get it from me.

Why is it my job to educate him on how to do his job? I moved out of the city to be left alone to care for my family. I did not ask for what happened. Maybe if we were two white guys getting together to talk it would have been different who know? But when you are approached in a manner where you are blatantly discriminated against because of color of your skin things tend to work out a little different than in Caucasian land. I do not have a chip on my shoulder against white people, in fact my wife is white and most of my friends are white, I just happen to be hispanic and that's it. Most white people I have met are very nice folks, but this guy was just a prick and when someone demeans you in front of your family like that I doubt even you mr high and mighty would have kept your cool. Like I said he attacked me verbally first, and scared my children when he started yelling at me. That is mainly what set me off seeing fear in my children's eye's through the window. I just had to get this creep off my property and politeness was clearly not going to work.

Sometimes you have to be a man and show you have a pair and I do not need your approval or anyone else's to stand up for myself. My only concern is what this minion might do in retaliation. In our current climate all it takes is for some scum bag to anonymously call police make up some bogus lie and bam you have swat kicking down your door and harassing your family. That is what I am concerned about.
