Remember, remember, the 5th of November

« on: May 16, 2010, 07:25:30 AM »

I am thinking of getting Ecoloblue water generator but I want to know what people who have them think after several months or years.

And a few specific questions:

1. Has anyone done a water analysis to determine if it really produces pure water?  How pure?

2. What happens if you do not change the filters? Such as just forgetting and using the filters up to twice the recommended service life. Also, if I depended on the generator for water and suddenly catastrophe strikes and filters cannot be acquired at all. If the filters are used past their specified lifetime, do they contaminate the water?

3.  Can the water be stored?    I think I heard someone say that the water does not have good shelf life.  It may have been Jason Bermas.  I think he started to say something like the water is great but it does not stay that way so you just dump unused water out....and he kinda trailed off there...

( I will not  use plastic bottles for several reasons.  I might be able to find some (antique?) Arrowhead glass bottles or some other large glass containers.  I bet there are many people in this forum that have never seen GLASS Arrowhead/Sparkletts water bottles.    Shocked   Sad  )

4. Do the filters remove fluoride?  Such as when it is used without the condenser with tap water.

5.  How do you like Ecoloblue after having it for long time?
After the novelty wears off and you have had to replace filters and parts....  Would you buy another or get a distiller or some other system?

1.I have not done an analysis but it did come with one from a third party.  The water is really really clear and tastes like nothing.

2.  The filters will get clogged. Then the machine will back up and over flow.  On the good side most of them last at least a year.  I ordered it with an extra two years worth of filters.  The first filter for the lower tank gets cleaned about once a month takes 10 mins.

3.  It actually cycles the water between the top and bottom tanks preventing stagnation.  We just put it in bottles when it fills the top tank up, so it can keep producing.

4.  The RO filter removes 99.9% of fluoride.  And the machine can be attached directly to the public water source.

5.  We LOVE ours!  Have had it about 5 months and even here in dry ass New Mexico it makes a gallon or more per day.  We also love the hot and cold system, it's perfect for tea, hot cereal, instant soup and so on, or if you just want a glass of ice cold pure H20.

Thanks for the thorough answers.

I have one question about the filter you change once a month:  you said it will "back up and overflow "if left too long.  Between the time it should have been changed and the point at which it overflows, is it contaminating the water?

When filters are used beyond their limit, the contaminants previously stopped by the filter can be forced thru.

You don't change it once a month just clean it.  It's the very first filter below the dehumidifer above the collection tank its a mesh membrane with carbon in it.  Take like 5-10 mins to clean it and the bottom tank out.

I said it will back up and over flow if you were to not change the internal mineral and RO filters.  When this filter gets clogged it prevents water from going into the collection tank and then it ends up on the bottom inside the machine and leaks onto the floor.  I haven't had to change any internal filters yet because its like every 12 months.

It's awesome -- small issues but I was able to take care of them myself .. very good tech support. The worst thing about it -- is UPS or fed ex.. who will try and KILL it in shipping. Have them box it up tight.

Yah I second that about the shipping - when I went through my first thorough cleaning with sterilization (I just used vinegar), I discovered that the top tank UV light was broken (but still works as far as I know, just the top part of the outer glass busted).  Since it was several months after purchase I didn't bother to ask them for a free replacement.

To answer your questions (sorry I'm all late on this thread, I haven't really been on this forum much):

>1. Has anyone done a water analysis to determine if it really produces pure water?  How pure?

Nope.  The water tastes incredible, though.

2. What happens if you do not change the filters? Such as just forgetting and using the filters up to twice the recommended service life. Also, if I depended on the generator for water and suddenly catastrophe strikes and filters cannot be acquired at all. If the filters are used past their specified lifetime, do they contaminate the water?

Good question, that one's for Ecoloblue.  I have been late on the filter replacement though and was reallllly late on cleaning the 1st tank filter and even air filter due to being so busy all the time, but the water still tasted great.  The film that builds up on the 1st tank filter is really disgusting if you let it go long enough.  The tap water here in central Texas is bad enough, like it's 10% limestone chalk or something.

One thing I noticed is that, since I don't have a kitchen exhaust fan, I sometimes pick up a faint taste of what I cook.  Same for burning incense.

3.  Can the water be stored?    I think I heard someone say that the water does not have good shelf life.  It may have been Jason Bermas.  I think he started to say something like the water is great but it does not stay that way so you just dump unused water out....and he kinda trailed off there...

I hear ya on the plastic.  I always carry a bpA-free made-in-USA Nalgene bottle or 2 with me and have never had issues storing the water long term.

4. Do the filters remove fluoride?  Such as when it is used without the condenser with tap water.

Looks like this was answered already; this was one of the selling points for me was that it removes most flouride which is a non-issue for me since I have never hooked it up to city water but it is really great to know I have that option especially if I moved to a desert environment.

5.  How do you like Ecoloblue after having it for long time? After the novelty wears off and you have had to replace filters and parts....  Would you buy another or get a distiller or some other system?

Nope, still planning on getting a solar power backup generator for it.  Replacing the filters is a no-brainer, really.  The parts are my biggest worry - I am concerned about the lifetime of it especially with regards to long-term survival situations - for that I would get a Berkey, I think because there's less complexity (less stuff to break, less points of failure) but otherwise it is one of the coolest things I've ever owned.  I'm thinking about buying another one as a backup!

The only thing that is or can be a hassle is flushing the system every 6 months.. that's a little bit of work. I've had to do it twice. But it's very humid here and that pink algae can build up fast.

I have one...and I like it.... Like the others said...cleaning basically is the only maintanance....but it's no big deal as long as you keep up on cleaning the bottom tank.

I have no job right now so I am selling a bunch of stuff.....and my Ecoloblue is one of those items..... if anyone is interested hit me up.....

Anymore information on this machine?  I currently drink water from my house that has a full Rain soft water softener plus RO filration system, and its doing pretty damn good at filtering everything, but I will be moving and doing a lot of traveling towards the end of this year thus I am in the market for getting a AWG to take with me wherever I go to have a source of clean un-fluoridated water etc, and I dont drink bottled water anymore and avoid plastics. Ive known about the ecoloblues due to all the advertising on AJ show, and I got to taste some water from one in a local health food store I used to work at, and it tasted fine, seemed healthy ( unfiltered tap water gives me severe headaches) Unfortunately on some recent research Ive been hearing bad things about ecoloblue company and products.
Such as bad customer service, especially if things fail; supposedly a lot of these machines are not operating properly, and or
are failing on people in less than 2 years, as well as replacement filters being expensive and long shipping delays.
One last negative thing I researched is that the machines are being made in china, bought for cheap and resold with ecoloblue labeling and such for way over priced costs than they should be and there are cheaper priced similar units out there.
Im not sure whats true and whats not, nor what are all my options but perhaps I can get some more info about the AWG's here, because it seems like a good idea, but I dont know how costly or how much a hassle it is to maintain one of these, and another one of the complaints I read about is it requires a lot of maintainence.

Thanks.

Just a heads up to anyone interested. I’m selling my EcoloBlue30’s 4 year supply of filter kits for OVER 70% OFF the normal price and it is in new never opened condition. I traded the unit itself in because we wanted a different model, so I’m trying to get rid of the filters I’ll never use. Check out my ebay page if you’re interested. Thanks.
