Don't want to carry a gun ? Want a light, easy to make tool for self-defense ? Get about a 12 inch long piece of PVC pipe and slice off the end at about a 60 degree angle. this is your sharp end. then drill a hole through the other end large enough to put a nylon wire tie through, about an inch from the end. Fashion the wire tie into a wrist strap. put some duct tape on the blunt end for a handle. Voila ! A sharp self-defense instrument. Cheap and easy. Won't set off a metal detector either.
