India politician shot dead at public meetingUnknown attackers shot a local politician at the podium of a public meeting in northern India Wednesday, police said.
Hanuman Sharan Shukla, member of a local district council, was gunned down at an event in Uttar Pradesh state's Gonda district, area police inspector Bharat Yadav told CNN.
Shukla, 40, was facing trial in 26 cases registered against him, Police suspect old resentments could be behind the fatal attack.
Television footage showed Shukla collapsing on the makeshift stage after the gunshots were fired.
Yadav said the assailants probably were present at the podium, and police have launched a manhunt for the attackers.
Shukla belonged to the party of the state chief minister, Mayawati, a low-caste woman leader, Yadav said.
India Wednesday marked the 119th birth anniversary of the father of its constitution, B.R. Ambedkar.
Yadav said the attack occurred when Shukla and his party colleagues were commemorating Ambedkar, hailed as messiah of India's vast low-caste communities called the Dalit or the suppressed.
