I've posted on here before and someone had posted a great link to tutorial site that explained what burning programs worked with what operatins systems and how to use them.  Of course, I bookmarked it, but about a  month ago I got a malware virus that killed my vista.  So now I have to figure out what to use with win 7 and I lost all my bookmarks.  If anyone has such a link, I would love to get it again.  Or if anyone knows the best way to burn downloaded alex films to dvd using win 7,  PLEASE let me know!

I used windows essentials and had a good picture but zero sound.  Windows Media player had no sound when I played the download on my computer, either.  But when I play the download on VLC, the sound is fine.  TIA for  anyhelp from anyone!!

From avi,xvid,mkv,etc. ConvertX to DVD.
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/

From DVD to anything.
http://www.dvdfab.com/

Both are "paid" software but are the best at what they do with minimal effort. If wanting freeware there is a long list of programs and a much, much steeper learning curve. Both have also had major updates which greatly enhanced thier quality and speed as well as both supporting multi-core cpu's. Both are XP,Vista,7 compatible.

IMO, these 2 programs are all you need to install on your pc for quality video transfer to DVD and conversion to digital format. The exception would be heavy video editing and processing, but that is a whole other situation.  Wink

ALSO: There are many "enabled"  Roll Eyes versions of these programs on the nets, if you wanted to try them out before a purchase.

The reason you had no sound in WMP but did in VLC is because you lack the codec for WMP to decode the audio. If you'd like to install the codec's, I'd suggest http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_mega_codec/ . It is free and updated regularly. I also suggest when installing to select in the drop down Option 8 (lots of stuff, NO player) and then continue through with default settings. WMP will play nearly anything after install of the codec pack. Alternatively, you could just continue to use VLC as it is a more robust and reliable player IMO.

Cool I'll use that link to get the sound working.  What I did before was burn one copy with window essentials then used image burn because it was much faster to make multiple copies.  Does VLC burn too?  I thought it was just for watching videos on my computer.

I used to use convertex2dvd, but don't have an account anymore and at this point in time $50 is too steep.  I probably will go back to it if I ever get a chance.

VLC is just a player, although it has tons of features.

I can understand the cost factor.  There are torrents for the programs though. I always try to support the companies that make good software by recommending them and purchasing them.  I myself have had my ConvertX expire for about 4 mo. and could not afford to renew, so an "enabled" version was used until I could afford the new license. It's funny, alot of these small software companies would not exist if it were not for torrents as they would get no use and no word of mouth. I have watched many tiny soft co.'s become large and produce a superior product over time. The best advertising is word of mouth from user to user and if a software is particularly valuable to you as a user you will, or should, support the co. by purchasing their product. Similar to the way AJ's dvd's get passed around free and he still receives funds either by donation or purchase. I am by no means condoning theft. I am condoning  , advertising, trial Wink and support of the software co.'s.

2 other programs to check out ...
TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress ... http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te4xp.html

TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4  ... http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/taw4.html

^ excellent products, for more involved video work. All of the Pegasys products are worthy of mention actually.

ImgBurn is a great software for burning. I actually dont use the included burning rom in the conversion softwares. I use Nero, but I ONLY use it for burning, IMO it sucks at everything else and has become bloatware.

I think the key is to find a soft and stick with it, learn all of its in and outs, whether free or paid. Also to break into categories is a good idea, i.e Rip, Convert, Burn... and have a soft for each. All in ones suk IMO as all softs for video do ONE thing very well but maybe not all of them well.

I definatly will write that program down for future reference.  I liked Convertex2dvd, but had issues with older Alex downloads being blocky.  Anything prior to Truth Rising had a horrible picture.

I am actually steering clear of any torrents.  That is how I contracted the malware virus and 3 days of hell trying to remove it.  It left me in safe mode only on my vista, so I had to upgrade to win 7.  Fortunatly I had a free upgrade disk because I bought my compter in the qualifying time frame.  But I'd rather not risk it again!

That Codec link worked for my sound issue of my download.  Now I am just waiting to see if it burns with sound.  Windows DVD Maker takes forever!  But hopefully once I get a hard copy I can zoom through copies to get ready for April 15th.  There should be a huge tea party here in Charlotte and I want a ton to hand out!  I actually have an external burning thing from sony, but not sure how to use it!  Guess I should figure that out to help with the speed issue.

Thanks for your help!

lol... ya public torrents is a risky proposition, private not so much. Malwarebytes = best purchase EVAR!!11! Smiley

if audio encoded to video was MP3,AC3... im gonna guess AC3 ... it should play fine on a stand alone.

ConvertX had a major update btw, cleaned up the prog nicely and added 2 pas encoding as an option. Previously only available through registry edits. It is WAY faster and WAY better quality now. They also added some different encoding algorithms to choose from. Just a heads up.

Remember when burning to go slow also, usually slowest speed the burner will go ex. 4X,6X ... usually faster than that and massive problems ensue. Burns are 10-20 min .... not much ya can do to make it faster and maintain quality.

and good luck... I mean how can people resist the truth for free right Smiley 100 discs passed from person to person goes along way.  Grin even if only a small % make the rounds. One at a time they will awaken....  Cool

Well the codec kinda worked.  My newest problem is that there is an intro with no sound.  There is text at the bottom of the screen that says "play scenes"  When I hit play on my dvd player, the film starts and the sound and picture are good.  How do I get rid of the intro on windows dvd maker?  I'm looking in it's help menu, but not finding much info.

I couldn't say as I have never really used the program. If I was gonna bet I'd say it was in the programs menus somewhere to NOT have an on screen display or menu.  You will have to re-encode the entire movie though once you find the setting and it may be multiple settings.

Well, I have officailly given up on windows dvd maker.  I seemed to have gotten the silent part to go away, but then half way through the film it went blocky and froze.  I have wasted yet another day and nothing to show.  A friend said to try alternativeto.net to find a program.  I am now trying free ISO creator, http://www.minidvdsoft.com/isocreator/  but am guessing after wasting a few hours it will give me some sort of error message.  Why can't alex just give us ISO to download if that is what all these stupid programs need to burn??

still having a problem with watching my convertxtodvd burned dvd.  I set it to "autoplayback" and it won't play when I insert it into my DVD player.  I watch it fine while it's being converted, but when it comes to playing from a burned DVD-won't work. Any suggestions?

your home dvd player may not like Blank media, or certain brands of blank media...
have you tried a different player?
